Oprah, NBC, Discovery -- What's the Deal with the Dr.?

The doctor who performed surgery on Kanye West's mother was booked on some big TV shows, but it appears none of the producers knew about his malpractice suits, allegations of sexual battery and physical assault, DUI convictions and pending disciplinary action before the Medical Board of California.

It took TMZ three hours to turn up the goods on Dr. Adams. So why were Oprah, Discovery Health, NBC and others in the dark? We asked for comment. Watch the piece that aired tonight on TMZ TV and judge for yourself.

91. Get real -- Realist! You now say that every network and show had people on with a shady past. Rather broad statement to make! The point is the due-diligence process. You have heard of due-diligence? I am not debating with you in regards to whether Oprah is a good person -- or what good she may have done in this world, I just am simply saying that a better job must be done in the screening process yesterday, today and in the future. People do look up to Oprah and if she gives the thumbs-up in regards to anything people will follow. Leaders have a much higher standard than you or I. Just do a better job in the due-diligence process..........THAT'S ALL.

92. ***MORE TMZ DECEPTION*** Thousands of procedures are performed in this country by doctors who are not "board certified" because BOARD CERTIFICATION IS NOT REQUIRED for plastic surgery in this country. FACT: Dr. Adams was trained in PLASTIC SURGERY at the University of Michigan and he has lots of experience in the procedures performed on Dr. West. Board Certification is simply not relevant to this situation, and TMZ should not deceive the public by unfairly and falsely suggesting that Dr. West died because Dr. Adams was not "Board Certified." Yes, its horrible that Dr. West died. What if it turns out that she had pre-surgery clearance and that she died because of a medical condition that was not disclosed to Dr. Adams and the physician who provided clearance? What relevance would his Board status, or his personal life have to that situation??? None. This is unfair reporting at its worst.

93. Dr. Adams appeared on Oprah BEFORE nearly every event being reported occurred. His Oprah appearance took place in November 2003. By contrast, the medical practice suits occurred as follows:
Rhonda McLain - October 2007
Teana Lucas - November 2004
Jana Beighle - August 2005
Bonita Hovey - December 2004
Terry Cage - June 2007

Two of Dr. Adams 3 DUIs occurred in March 2006 and April 2006. Only one (Mary 2003) occurred before his Oprah appearance.

The Medical Board complaint relating to the DUIs and overall alleged drinking problem was filed in 2007.

All the dates above were culled from TMZ's own reporting, which shows that NEARLY EVERY malpractice complaint, DUI arrest and Medical Board complaint were filed AFTER Dr. Adam's appearance on Oprah. So why would TMZ inquire about why Oprah failed to properly research Dr. Adams?? Kind of a silly question since Oprah doesn't have a crystal ball.

TMZ readers need to use their brains and stop repeating what they read, unless they think about it first. In this case, the sloppy journalism award goes to TMZ!

94. Responding to #92 -mdwife

"FYI, Dr. 90210, Robert Rey is not board certified in Plastic Surgery either..."

So? What does this have to do with Dr. Adams, his famous dead patient, questions about many things surround about her surgery, his 3 DUIs, malpractice suits, patient allegations, court papers, wife beating, etc... If it were just about his board certification, we probably would not be hearing so much about him.

Yes, Dr Rey may not be board certified as plastic surgon(as far as I can tell)... and perhaps he should get board certified. And maybe after all the bad press from the Dr. Adams stories, he will get board certified. Perhaps he is even working on it now. This is all Dr Rey's choice.

The important thing to remember is you don't need to be board certified to be a plastic surgeon. Although most plastic surgeons are board certified, but there is a small minority that are not. While board certification is nothing magic, it does assure patients that their surgeon has passed a rigoress battery of testing regarding their surgical specialty. And most doctors would advise that their patients see a board certified specialist. This probably very wise advice for anyone seeking any type of surgery.

95. FYI: From the New York Times 03/16/06 article on Dr Rey:

"Some 5,300 plastic surgeons in the United States are certified, according to the American Board of Plastic Surgery Inc. Dr. Jewell estimated the number of trained plastic surgeons who are not certified to be fewer than 200. Dr. Rey said he has merely postponed taking the certification exams because he has been too busy"

98. Not that there is anything wrong with Plastic Surgery, but I came across a great site on the web where a Dermatologist who specialized in non-surgical treatments actually answers any skin or derm questions you may have...

You can check it out here...

99. SHOCKED ! I have learned a valuable lesson. Just because professionals appeared on well known TV shows, you still have to check their credentials. Oprah, did you check Dr Oz background? Please do your homework people, TRUST NO SHOW OR NO ONE when it comes to surgery. DO YOUR HOMEWORK. .
