Dennis Quaid's Newborn Twins in Medical Nightmare

11/20/2007 6:45 PM PST BY TMZ STAFF

TMZ has learned that Dennis Quaid's newborn twins are fighting for their lives after being inadvertently overdosed at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

Sources tell us the twins -- Thomas Boone and Zoe Grace -- were accidentally given a massive dose of Heparin, an anti-coagulant. Babies typically get 10 units. Our sources say they were each mistakenly given 10,000 units. The drug is used to flush out IV lines and prevent blood clots. We're told one dose was given on Sunday morning, another on Sunday evening.

We're told late Sunday night, both babies started to "bleed out." Both babies are now at Cedars in the neo-natal intensive care unit where we're told they are stable.

The twins were born to Quaid and wife Kimberly Buffington November 8 via surrogate.

A rep for Quaid did not immediately return our call for comment and there was no immediate comment from Cedars.

We're told a technician stored the Heparin in the wrong place, and when a nurse grabbed the medicine for the babies without looking -- it was the wrong dosage.

A source says the babies are now being given Protamine, which reverses the effects of Heparin.

UPDATE: We're told as many as thirteen patients at Cedars were mistakenly given the overdose of Heparin, but the effects are more critical because of the age and weight of the twins.

#69......How dare you say that new grad nurses have no common sense. As a nurse, I've seen new grads check med doses a lot more carefully than seasoned RNs. New grads are much more careful than you probably think. I have to totally agree with #102.

the same thing happend to our baby when we took her to kiaser after she decided she wanted to be born at home. my husband took her in while i stayed at home. she was only 2hrs old when they grabbed our baby from my husband's arms. He said they started shooting her up with imunizations. They gave her 12 shots!! She went into shock. He said they didn't know what to do. She became very sick and was dying. Kiaser then called CPS on us for having a baby at home. After one week, my husband demanded they move her to U.C.S.F in San Franisco. As soon as she was in thier care she got better.
Babies DO NOT get thier first shots untill they are 2mo. NOT 2hrs.
We will never go to Kaiser again.
I would rather take my chances at home.
Our baby is now 3yrs and THANKS TO THE STAFF AT U.C.S.F she is doing fine.
My prayers go to anyone who is currently being railroaded by crappy hostpital service.

The exact thing happened at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis last year in the nicu. You would think when babies die the whole country would take better precautions.

Cedars is one of the worst hospitals in California. They have a bad history for delivering babies. They have the largest percentage of cerebral palsy, taking their time delivering babies and depriving them of oxygen causing all sorts of medical problems. The laws protect doctors and there is no repercussions, you cant sue for malpractice these days.
You especially cant sue a corporate giant like Cedars. I have heard horror stories from that hospital and make it point never to go there.

Jennifer.Bush. . .wow. . .what a disgusting human being you are. . .to say that his innocent little newborn babies would deserve to be punished because he may or may not have cheated on Meg Ryan (by the way, I believe the "reports" were that she cheated on him with Russell Crowe), you are just too much for words. . . what kind of person wishes death on two newborn babies. . .you are sick. . .really, really sick.
May the Lord watch over His precious gifts, may they quickly recover from this terrible incident with no long term effects and lead happy lives.

for #113. NO nurses are NOT "glorified bed pan emptiers". what a ridiculous and stupid statement. are you retarded? wait, no. i've worked with mentally challenged people that have more common sense and compassion than you. for your information when you're in a hospital or surgical center or clinic, whatever, WHO takes cares of you MOSTLY? NURSES, that's who. they have important jobs to do. as a social worker, i work closely with all types of people in the health care industry. nurses, licensed mental health workers, social workers, etc. we, as a whole might not get paid alot but we do our jobs because we love it. what kind of populations do we deal with? drug addicts, AIDS patients, abused/neglected children...you name it, we work with them. populations that you most likely wouldn't even want to be around. we have no say in who we help. nurses and the rest of us in similar fields help anyone. how dare you try to degrade them to such a level? i pray one day you end up in a hospital truly ill so you can see who takes care of you. yes, this person made a mistake but don't generalize because its not fair to the many HIGHLY trained nurses there are everywhere

To # 121 Allen

I think the room monitor *smile* removed the offensive post. The numbers are obviously off and the new #9 is probably wondering why he/she's being called out.
