Autism Group to CBS: Fire That Retard!

Some idiot on "Big Brother 9" has irked more people than usual by referring to people with autism as "retards." Moron.

TMZ has obtained this letter from John Gilmore, Executive Director of Autism United, to Viacom bigwig Sumner Redstone and CBS, demanding that they take action after a segment aired on Wednesday's show featuring Adam Jasinski making the unfortunate remark. According to the letter, Gilmore claims CBS made a "conscious choice" in running the quote -- and used it for "their own personal goals."

The organization calls for "Big Brother 8" (oops) to be canceled, and expects an apology to people with autism. Gilmore also tells TMZ they've contacted the show's advertisers.

272. I have two family members with autism. I don't think the show needs to be cancelled. I actually like the show a lot. Adam is an ignorant ass, which you can plainly see from watching the show. I do think that he should apologize though !

273. "different abilities"- such as any of these people who show(ed) signs of being on the autistic spectrum?

Beethoven
Alexander Graham Bell
Thomas Edison
Henry Ford
Thomas Jefferson
Mozart
Isaac Newton
Nikola Tesla
Mark Twain
Vincent Van Gogh
Isaac Asimov

If you have ever played music, used a telephone, turned on a electric light, heard of Tom Sawyer, or driven a car.... you can thank an autistic mind.

The remark was rude, though he probably thought nothing of it. Funny, because the definition of retarded is "slow or limited in intellectual or emotional development ", and I would say that the guy is himself is experiencing some issues with both emotional AND intellectual development. Just because he works with "them" all day doesn't mean he has the right to say things like that. I think asking to cancel the show (for this reason) is going a bit overboard, but I would like to see (after the show is over) that the guy at least acknowledges that what he said was at best, disrespectful to a whole bunch of people.

274. I have a 4 year old son with autism and I cringed when I heard him say what he said and it's people like him that I have nightmares about. People who work with special needs children who dont give a crap about them and who abuse your kids. I weep for the future... he's an ass.

275. I have a son with autism...he is not autistic...he has autism...autism doesn't have him...he also has mild mental retardation. If all of you watched the interview with Adam's mom and brother, they subtly let on that Adam himself has mild Autism or Asbergers Syndrome. It doesn't excuse his comment, but I can understand his comment was inappropriate and related to his own social deficit. A lot of people live and work as part of our world who have Autism. What the outside world fails to realize is that just because a child or adult with autism look normal, doesn't mean that they don't suffer with the difficult task of trying to fit in. They are like a loose puzzle piece that doesn't fit quite right. They have to constantly compensate for their awkwardness. We all make mistakes and say things we wish we could take back...the difference is that some people with autism don't have the ability to filter their comments. Thanks

277. I feel that the call for cancellation of the show is a bit over board. Sure, Adam made a mistake by referring to autistics children as retards, but in reality, he made a mistake. I do feel that Adam truly wants to help the challenged, and the fact that he erred in his comment, I believe that people should give him a chance to at least make an apology or an explanation of why he said what he said. We don't know what it's like to be living in the BB HOUSE...where cameras are EVERYWHERE, and every single thing that you say is recorded and possibly be put on air. I'm sure we've all at one time or another said something that didn't quite come out the way it sounded, so before we all try and judge Adam by just ONE comment that he made, we should step back and think about mistakes that we've all made when we speak as well.
