"Lost" Diary -- Meet Kevin Johnson

LostHey, it's Daniel from TMZ here, back with the last "Lost" Diary before our Writer's Strike hiatus.

I took off Thursday and Friday from work so I can stay home for four days straight and watch nothing but college basketball. Now that "Lost" is on, I kind of don't know what to do. Who would be the four number one seeds in the "Lost" tournament? I go with Ben, Locke, Jack and Sayid -- I think they best represent what "Lost" is about. I'd have to put Widmore in my Final 4, though somehow he's becoming more and more of a player as things go on.

For all you "Lost" Diary newbies, here's how it goes: I gather with a group of friends watching "Lost," writing what happens on the show as it happens, and throwing in my two cents along the way. I am watching tonight's episode of "Lost" alone as Lauren is MIA and Ari wanted to wait and watch with her. Lauren's commitment to "Lost" is embarrassing these days and frankly I think it's time I take the show on the road once "Lost" comes back from hiatus. Anyone got room on their couch for me? I'll bring the chips! Let's roll ...

9:00 -- Previously on "Lost" is as a season 2 greatest hits package -- since that's the last time we saw Michael.

9:01 -- Locke is hosting a tupperware party of sorts as he brings everyone up-to-speed on what's been going on. Another scene where people tell other people things we already know.

9:02 -- "We kinda, like, knew that forever ago." -- Hurley to Miles when Miles says the freighter is there for Ben.

9:03 -- "My spy on the freighter is Michael." -- Ben. To quote Hurley, "We kinda, like, knew that forever ago."

9:04 -- "I'm here to die." -- Michael to Sayid when Sayid asks him why he is on the boat. Michael, could you be a little more specific?

9:09 -- Ben is giving Alex (who, along with Karl and Rousseau, looks weird in actual clothes) a map to the Temple. Perhaps, finally, we'll see what the rest of the Others have been up to.

9:10 -- Did anyone notice that, like, EVERYONE is listed as being a guest star tonight -- including LIBBY??? I don't even know what to make of this info right now.

9:11 -- We're flashing back now -- hopefully to explain how Michael ended up on the boat. Or maybe we're flashing forward, I don't know.

9:12 -- Did Michael just pin a suicide note to his jacket?

9:13 -- Yes, yes he did.

9:17 -- Didn't work though, as Michael wakes up in a hospital, looking a little worse for wear -- and dreaming of Libby.

9:18 -- The note pinned to Michael's chest was written to Walt. Something obviously happened to him, the question is what.

9:19 -- Apparently, Walt is just fine, living with Michael's mom. Not showing Walt is a clever way to cover up the fact that he he's, like, a foot taller than he should be.

9:21 -- "I want a gun. I want a gun with bullets." -- Michael. He wasn't kidding when he said he wanted to die. If at first you don't succeed by driving into a shipping container at high speed ...

9:22 -- Another ghost of island past -- it's Tom. Is he actually real? Can't be ... right?

9:27 -- Seems real enough. Oh right, this is months ago, so he's not dead yet. Totally forgot about that.

9:28 -- Tom tells Michael that the island won't let him kill himself. Did the island cause the car crash that kept Jack from jumping off the bridge at the end of last season? Hmmm ...

9:29 -- Others get to stay in penthouse hotel suites?

9:30 -- After Michael tries and fails to shoot himself in the head, a conveniently-timed newscast reveals the wreckage of Oceanic Flight 815 has been found. What fantastic timing!

9:31 -- According to Tom, it wasn't Ben that staged the plane crash -- it was Widmore. Either way, the point of the fake plane crash is the same -- to keep people from finding the island.

9:32 -- Tom even has an entire file -- complete with cemetery photos where Widmore got the the 324 bodies. Details, details, details.

9:33 -- Tom is trying to guilt Michael into being Ben's "guy on the boat" -- and he's doing quite a good job of it. We're just past the halfway point of this episode and I have to say, while it's interesting to see how Michael got onto the freighter, it would have been more interesting to see how he got from the island back to NY.

9:38 -- Not only is Kevin Johnson on the boat, but so are Minkowski and Naomi. What are the odds Kevin and Naomi ended up getting together? Thought I picked up on some vibes there from Naomi.

9:40 -- Is Miles ever NOT creepy?

9:41 -- Man, Tom would make a great football coach -- his motivational speeches are awesome.

9:43 -- Lawnmower Man is giving Michael his theory that Oceanic Flight 815 is really out there somewhere. Michael is probably more inclined to believe him than most.

9:44 -- What's in the box? Fax machine? Laptop? Camera?

9:45 -- The conveniently-timed random gunfire gives Michael all the motivation he needs to open the box, where he finds ...

9:46 -- ... a bomb ...

9:47 -- ... and Libby's ghost ...

9:48 -- ... and a note that reads "NOT YET." Watching Michael try and kill himself all these times is like watching "Groundhog Day" with Bill Murray.

9:53 -- Michael has a call from the mainland -- and it's Walt.

9:54 -- But it's actually Ben, trying to explain how he's different from Widmore and how he didn't kill Libby and Ana Luca -- Michael did. Michael already feels bad enough -- does he have to rub it in?

9:55 -- Ben is giving Michael the game plan for taking down the freighter. Sounds easy enough (and apparently it was).

9:56 -- And now we're back to now ("Spaceballs" reference) and Sayid is outraged that Michael is working for Ben. That's like the future pot calling the kettle black, no?

9:57 -- Sayid is selling out Michael to the captain, and I'm imaging the captain will shoot him in the head and grant Michael his wish. This is the act that will begin Sayid's downward spiral that leads him to go work for Ben.

9:58 -- Rousseau, Alex and Karl are making their way to the Temple. Almost forgot about them.

9:59 -- R.I.P. Karl.

10:00 -- R.I.P. Rousseau.

10:01 -- "I'm Ben's daughter!!!" -- Alex

It's important not to think of this episode as a season finale or anything like that -- it was just intended to be the 8th episode out of 16. So I don't want to hold it to the same standard that I would a finale of some kind.

That said, this episode fell a little short for me. As I mentioned before, I feel like we were kind of robbed of half of the "What Happened to Michael?" story. It was interesting to see how far into depression he sunk over killing Ana Lucia and Libby. And they did give him a pretty good reason for working for Ben, when really I never thought they'd have a real good one. But I can't shake the feeling that we missed a good opportunity (but I understand that they pretty much can't show Walt ever again).

All in all, I'd say we got a solid, but not spectacular episode of "Lost." I give it a C+. While there are plenty of things I liked about the episode, if I had said to you going in, "Tonight we find out what happened to Michael since he left the island and how he ended up on the freighter" -- wouldn't you have expected an unbelievable episode? I know I did.

As for the ending, there are two possibilities: 1) Lawnmower Man took the helicopter back to the island with some people and now they have Alex (just like Ben didn't want) or 2) Ben knew that Richard and company would never let Rousseau and Karl in the Temple, and they killed them (in which case Ben sent them out there to be killed -- assuming they're really dead).

Well it looks like we're off for about a month. I absolutely, positively promise I will do a question answer column on Monday over at thelostdiary.com -- I am way too far behind. Click here to send me a question.

Til then ...

61. Tom is gay? Or does he "indulge" when not on the island? I thought that reference was interesting. I found this episode to be a little slow. Most important question...when is Sawyer going to take off his shirt? I'm really missing shirtless Sawyer.

62. Lost Dork: first, today's my first post, so I'm not sure what you mean about my supposed constant bashing. Second, all I'm saying is that we live in a far too enlightened age to be commenting on the fact a character is gay. It's just really immature. And thankfully, there is no longer a stereotypical gay.

63. Year 1. Alex was kidnapped from Rossoue when she was a baby. Ben raised her as her own. Rossoue and her family were shipwreaked 16 years ago. Alex's age.

Did anyone catch Mike's mom saying "we can't even call you by your real names"?

64. 1. Daniel, every Friday all you do is COMPLAIN! If you don't like this show........ please, stop watching! You claim that it's the best show on television, yet all you do is criticize everything about it. I don't understand how you seem to dislike so many episodes. I think it's time you take your blog on the road. I agree, not all episodes are MIND BLOWING, but it's LOST. The writers know how to keep us in suspense. If they made reveals every episode, it would loose all it's charisma!

2. For all the people (i.e V.S. #34) please stop posting "JMO" obviously it's "just your opinion" you sound really lame when you add that to "your opinion". When you're posting a comment, it's obviously "just your opinion" Please...... just stop!

3. This episode was great, all LOST episodes are great, all of the people that "don't get it" should go and watch Eli Stone or American Idol. People, LOST is about all these characters finding themselves, and we still have 2 more years for these writers to reveal answers for us.

65. Why isnt anyone talking about the fact that MILES WENT TO WALTS G-MAS HOUSE! He went over there to talk to a spirit that was murdered and still haunting the place. We now find out it was WALT!!! Who killed him? How did Miles and when did Miles go over there? I thought you would have mentioned that. PS-I love love love your post! I look forward to it as much as watching Lost! :)

66. @ lizakay...Rousseau was stranded with her expedition crew, not family. I think we need to find out if she conceived on the island, I don't know if she said she was pregnant while on her ship...that would be strange for her to embark if pregnant. I don't know if it has been said for certain who the father was...my stupid brother has my DVDs...I need to get them back and find out.

67. TONY P---Alex is not Ben's biological daughter. He and the others stole her from Danielle's camp and then raised her to believe that her mother had died and he was her father. She was 7 months pregnant when she arrived on the island with 6 other people as part of a science expedition, They all eventually died, she said they were "sick" so she killed them off.
LOSTINBOSTIN-- Michael found the Rolex lying on the beach. Jin attacked him because it was his..well, it was actually supposed to be delivered to a business associate in L.A. from Mr. Paik, but they didnt make it obviously. Michael gave the watch back after Sun explained it to Michael. --Then after they launched on the raft, Jin gave it to Michael.
KELLYBY- I think that you are right about the timing-- it is Christmas time because his mother's house is decorated. I think that because the island doesnt want him dead, he has the ability to heal very quickly, much like Locke did after Ben shot him....

68. So it would now makes sense that Michael was in the coffin. He changed his name. His mother and son are not talking to him. Everyone thinks Michael is dead, so nobody would attend the funeral. He betrayed the Losties, so that's why Kate asked, "why would I?" when Jack asked if she was going...

69. Why is a show which makes people "think" considered frustrating/aggravating/ and all of the rest of things some people are calling it? I am not attacking anyones comments, just want people to look at a different perspective.

I think it is great to watch something that makes you :

A) Pay attention
B) think , react, research topics, etc
C) encounter different blogs with great theories, questions, and comments

I think tv is so weak, I only make sure to watch Lost. I think we are being "dumbed down" in society enough, so this kind of stimulation (both mental and the Sawyer type) is great.

The characters are like none other on tv, especially Ben. Fascinating how well chosen the actors are for this show. Instead of bashing , lets celebrate that someone in tv land cares enough for us to bring our their best abilities to entertain us. I for one am thankful for their efforts.

70. Hot sexy momma. . . maybe it was Walts ghost while he was on the island.

71. For all of you that complain about Daniels post. Telling him to leave, or take your blog on the road. WTF? If you dont like it-YOU leave. For petes sakes. I am so sick of people saying "I hate your post" "You are so negative" etc. Then stop reading and posting at this site! God knows there are tons of other sites to post on.
side note-grow up!-Do you just pout and take your toys and go home when others disagree with you? Its fun to disagree and see other view points.

*PS-As for the gay comments. Gay or not. Shocking or not. I believe it warranted a fun sarcastic comment about it. Kind of sad you didnt say anything. I thought it was more creepy than a man getting his healthy sexual relations. Tom creeps me out whether he is gay or straight. Its that voice, and that creeeeepy smile. Ick.

72. I refuse to believe Aaron is part of the Oceanic Six. The producers have even said he's not. So the ABC promo can f#$@ right off.

73. This was in my local paper and thought some of you might be interested: "The mystery of the four-toed statue on Lost has been solved---sort of. Under questioning this week in LA, Damon Lindelof, the show's main producer, says the foot never made a comeback on the show because it creeped out ABC execs. "We got a note back from the network which was: "This is too weird". We're like, do you watch the show? This is too weird?" And essentially the execs said, "Could it be a six-toed statue?". "If someone could explain why a six-toed statue is less weird than a four-toed statue, that's exactly what we will do, Lindelof said. Because ABC wanted the foot dropped, the origin and meaning of the statue were never explained.

74. Tired of haters we are tired of you. Don't tell me how to post. If you don't like it don't read it. You have balls to attack
Daniel. Damn give someone a break. You are not running anything around here. So please just write what you think.
You did not have to use me as an i.e. What a bitch!

75. #63--very interesting. I didn't realize that was the house Miles went to. Are we sure about that b/c he went there in the past. Before he was on the freight, right (I really don't know just thinking it was a flash back of before he went on the frieght?) and Walt was not dead when Miles was actually on the frieght (presently). I don't know. I've got myself confused but does anyone else see where I'm coming from? I just don't see how that could be Walk or Micheal that Miles was there for.............
