Peter Strauss Bitten, Dog Bites Dust

4/24/2008 2:45 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

peter straussActor Peter Strauss was viciously attacked by a pit bull -- and the attack was so bad, the authorities put down the dog.

Here's what we know. A 30-pound pit bull mix escaped through its owner's fence late last month and attacked 61-year-old Strauss ('memba "Rich Man, Poor Man"?), who was on his property outside of Ojai, CA. We're told the ferocious dog found Strauss in his orchard and attacked him. Strauss was eventually able to escape by climbing up a tree.

A struggle ensued, and the dog eventually went on the hunt for fresh skin, attacking a neighbor. The Ventura County Dept. of Animal Regulation came and subdued the dog with a dog-catching pole.

The dog's owner surrendered the animal to the VCDAR and requested it be put down ... which it was.

We know Strauss was bitten in the legs. He was taken to the hospital and treated.

Hey, Brenda...where's the understanding for the small dogs, eh? You want people to think it's the owners' fault when a pitbull attacks - yet you want us to think that small dogs are innately aggressive. Where's the same understanding for the other breeds that you demand of pitbulls? Kinda hypocritical, don't ya think?

right on

24. 17. yeah you idiots why do you think they are banned??? Its dumb ass people like yourselves that have a closed mind and think that every Rottweiller, PitBull, and Doberman Pinshcer are violent... I have 5 kids with a Rottweiler and a boxer and my Rotty would never hurt a fly.. Its those little dogs that bite everyone. Its the owners of these breeds that are mistreating and mishandling them... The people need to have the appropriate action taken to avoid this... They need to ban dumb asses and animial abusers

BRENDA - You are 100% right.. Those little dogs bite all the time. Anyone is at risk.. They get away with anything... Totally 100% right....

LITTLE DOGS BITE also...

BUT YOU DON'T DIE WHEN A LITTLE DOG BITES YOU.

to say that pit bulls that are raised properly like any other normal house pet are unpredictable and hold the potential to hurt or even kill their owners or neighbors is to be guilty of the highest form of ignorance. go educate yourselves about the breed before you make such arrogant and erroneous comments. and to the idiot that said pit bulls are more likely to bite than labradors, do some research you moron. the american temperment testing society has noted that pit bulls are actually LESS likely to bite than labs. why is that? because they are the best breed in the world. they used to once be americas favorite dog. now the media just plays on the negative stigma surrounding this breed. like this very article. it says it was a pitbull in the headline, but when you read it it says a pit bull mix. so it could've been half rottweiler and half pit bull, but stories of rottweilers attacking people don't make the news and sell newspapers now do they? once again a biased and unfair news story hyped up to make pit bulls look like vicious dogs just to get people to watch the news or read a newspaper. i tell you what, come to my yard and try to take my pit bulls and it won't be the dogs you have to worry about.

Pit Bulls should be illegal to own. It's not the owners, it's the breed. They are aggressive, period. Anyone who says otherwise is ignorant or blind. You don't hear of rampaging golden retrievers do you? My neighbors had a pit bull (they were from Jamaica... not a big shocker!) which they refused to leash so I called animal control daily until they finally agreed to give up the dog rather than contain it. The dog would watch my two year old when we were outside like she was a freaking steak dinner. Yeah, they are GRRRREAT dogs! Anyone who would own one is an idiot.

It's true, lots of dogs BITE, but lots of dogs don't MAUL! Those are two different things. Pit Bulls fight and maul to the death., they don't stop after one bite. THAT is why they should be banned.

pitbull lover

Pitbulls are loving dogs. All of you poeple making stupid statements about pitbulls being vicious animals have no idea what you are talking about. I have two male pitbulls and they are the most loving dogs you will every meet. However, if you try to hurt me or my children they will attack you. BUT THAT IS WHAT THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO DO. I suggest that all you ignorant people do some checking on which breed has the highest number of attacks AND IT IS NOT PITBULLS. The only reason they make the news is because they are so powerful so when they do bite they can cause a lot of harm. THE OWNER OF THIS DOG SHOULD BE IN TROUBLE....IT'S HOW YOU RAISE THE DOG NOT THE BREED...GET IT RIGHT PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!!

8. PITBALL IS NOT A A DOSILE BREED. THEY ARE MORE LIKLY TO ATTACK THEN A LABADORE FOR EXAMPLE.. IVE HAD PITS ALL MY LIFE AND THEY CAN BE GOOD OR BAD.. IVE HAD SHEAPARDS THAT WERE MORE CRAZY THEN ANY PIT IVE EVER HAD. HOWEVER A PITBULL WAS MADE TO DO DAMAGE AND KILL.. ITS IN THEIR BLOOD.. THATS WHY THEY HAVE THE MUSCLES IN THEIR FACE AND A JAW THAT LOCKS.. SO IF YOU THINK LIKE SOME MORONS THAT PITBULLS ARE SO SWEET AND LET THEM AROUND UR KIDS AND SAY THEY WOULD NEVER HURT ANYONE THEN UR A MORON TOO. THEY ARE JUST ANIMALS WITH THE CAPABILITY TO KILL!!

Ummm..first, learn to spell, that is for certain, and second, learn more about this breed that you say you know SOOO much about...the 'locking jaw' is a myth. The dog does NOT have a locking jaw.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pit_Bull_Terrier
Yes, a pit bull can do more damage than many of your other dogs because they were originally bred to latch on to the NOSE of the BULL and NOT let go...if that dog let go, he was dead, so they would hang on for dear life. But this locking jaw thing is simpy not true.
One of the biggest things that contributes to BAD Pits are these backyard breeders that inbreed some of their Pits to simply get some crazy and unbalanced Pits, some of them are fed cocaine in with their food to make them a little crazier, gun powder mixed in with their food, they do all sorts of vile things to some of them to MAKE them crazy to get a good 'fighter'. Some of the ones that people buy and nurture great just come from bad breeders. However, a GOOD PIT from a GOOD breeder is a stable and very smart dog that is faithful and incredibly loving.

What a fucking loser...

Thanks, TMZ, for adding yet another pitbull story into the news. It's the irresponsible owner's that ruin things for all of us. My pitbull loves all people, young and old. I'm a married mother of three young children and my dog has done nothing but love my children. I do not deny what they were bred to do and that there is always a slim possibility that they will attack, but if a dog has the proper training, exercise, love and attention the chances are extremely slim. A tired dog is a good dog, expecially when it comes to pitbulls. They are high energy dogs that require much exercise, and when they're bored and full of energy is the time that they tend to get in trouble. The irresponsible owners that do not research the breed before they adopt or buy these dogs are the problem because they don't understand the special needs and requirements of being a responsible pitbull owner. It's a lot of work, but well worth the love and affection that he shows my family. I was actually recommended to get a pitbull by several dog trainer's here in NYC because they're great family dogs when properly trained and raised with children. Find out why the dog was unsupervised outside, even idiots know that pitbulls are escape artists...prosecute the S.O.B. Don't tell me it was another chained up pitbull that someone used to boost their ego?

I agree with the comments about Pits getting a bad rap. Harvey you know this only perpetuates the notion that Pits are ferocious creatures who attack on sight. The real truth is that the dog probably was raised poorly and people forget to just walk the dog daily. It's unfair that most of the time these dogs are left tied up in the back for pretty much their whole lives w/ no physical activity, no socialization. If people were left in solitary confinement w / no exercise for the majority of their lives I'm sure the result would be you'd have a crazy pent up person ready to strike. People should walk and socialize your dogs. Dogs are a reflection of their trainers. Why is it only pits get a bad rap? They're sweet dogs and usually it's the owners that cause their dogs to be hostile.

I wasn't thrilled when my daughter brought a pit puppy home...I bought into the hype...but now I see it just depends on how these dogs are raised. Her pit is the sweetest of all her dogs (her dauchsand is a vile little bitch). When it comes to children, NEVER leave them alone with ANY breed of dog....period.

I work in the veterinary field and any breed of dog has the potential to be aggressive. People that have problems with their own animals, regardless of breed, have these problems because they didn't take the time to appropriatly train their dogs. The people that write that their dog has food aggression and bit members of the family....I am sure that this dog displayed this behavior as a puppy and you thought it was cute but as it got older and larger, it got out of control. If things like that were nipped in the butt when they first started happening, dogs would be more respectful. I have children and 2 dogs that are both labs, who are great with my kids, but I would never leave them in a room alone because ANIMALS ARE UNPREDICTABLE BY NATURE!!! If people would stop treating their pets like spoiled kids and like dogs, there would be a lot less issue on this topic!

Stop this idiocy that Pit Bulls are docile!!!!! How stupid are you people? They are bred to be vicious and no matter how gently they are raised there is a potential for unchecked aggression. PUT AN END TO THIS BREED!!!!!!!!!

Get better, kiddo

The breed can't help it, it's inbred. Pitt owners refuse to face reality and obey the rules. Law says they are to be kept in a fenced yard, AND leashed in that fenced yard, It must be posted 'beware of dog' at all areas exposed to the public! They are considered a dangerous species and basically should be eliminated. The people who defend the dogs are the owners, who haven't been bite YET! Talk to ones who have!
