Sharpton Spanks the Monkey Cartoon

2/18/2009 11:20 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF

The Reverend Al Sharpton is putting the smack down on the New York Post, suggesting racism could be a factor in a political cartoon featured in this morning's edition.

Al Sharpton
The cartoon (by Sean Delonas) comes in the wake of yesterday's national news story about the cop who shot and killed a rampaging chimp in Connecticut. But the controversy in the comic comes from the dialogue between the two officers -- which reads, "Now they will have to find someone else to write the stimulus bill."

Before most of you woke up, Sharpton already fired off a statement saying, "The cartoon in today's New York Post is troubling at best given the historic racist attacks of African-Americans as being synonymous with monkeys. One has to question whether the cartoonist is making a less than casual reference to this when in the cartoon they have police saying after shooting a chimpanzee that "Now they will have to find someone else to write the stimulus bill."

"Being that the stimulus bill has been the first legislative victory of President Barack Obama (the first African American president) and has become synonymous with him it is not a reach to wonder are they inferring that a monkey wrote the last bill?"

Calls to the Post have not been returned.Launch Photos

UPDATE: The editor-in-chief of the NY Post just released this statement: "The cartoon is a clear parody of a current news event, to wit the shooting of a violent chimpanzee in Connecticut. It broadly mocks Washington's efforts to revive the economy. Again, Al Sharpton reveals himself as nothing more than a publicity opportunist."

If you read most of the comments, you can certainly tell who the educated ones are! They are the ones that don't have to write in ALL CAPS, know how to spell and aren't offended by this cartoon as, they know it has to do with politics! All of politics! Not just the black ones.

So get the f!ck over your entitled selves and take that raging energy and do something positive with it!

I'm rich and I love Obama ~ when you have to tell someone about your "wealth" then, it really means you are one poor son of a b!tch!

White power

It's not racist, just like how TMZ viewers voted that Miley Cyrus imitating Asians wasn't racist. People need to get a sense of humour. Why is is such an outrage when BLACKS are ridiculed compared to Asians being ridiculed?

Let's first deal with the cartoon for a moment....there is only one animal shown that's shot. The caption reads, "They'll have to find someONE else (emphasis mine) to write the next stimulus bill' so we can rule out the possibility that the artist is talking about Reid, Pelosi and the rest of the stimulus authors. It is racist.
That being said calling Bush a chimp vs. calling a black person a chimp has a different connotation because of the history
of this country. Yes, slavery was abolished in the constitution in 1865 for the masses, although according to the 13th amendment to the constitution if you are incarcerated you are a slave, yes in the year 2009. but remember, black people still dealt with the overt injustices from slavery up until the 1960s.
(13th amendment to US Constitution, Section 1. Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, EXCEPT AS A PUNISIMENT FOR A CRIME where of the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction)
Until blacks and other minority race groups enmasse are the ones in charge and running things like the majority race group they cannot be labeled "racist". They do not have the power to control the lives and livelihood of other people. I know it may be hard to grasp this as a white person living in these times that didn't have anything to do with slavery, Jim Crow and the like, but white people in this country were the ones who were designated to benefit generationally from racism, whether your life reflects that now or not. I mean come on, you DID have a 400 year head start from the time black folks were enslaved until abolition, and you didn't have to start from absolutely nothing, not even your own culture, identity and in most cases family members to help!African americans had to create and are still creating their identity, which is one reason why the whole world tries so hard to immulate them. I won't even include the Jim Crow period following! Black folks have to fly to where white folks can just walk into. Look at this election: President Obama's qualifications academically and personally were imppecable, but we as a nation still considered John McCain a serious competitor once he chose Palin with all her intellectual shortcomings. I mean she STILL says you can see Russia from Alaska! those who say it's just blacks being overly sensitive and playing the race card do not understand.

see only white people are the ones who is saying that this isn't racist. Black people was always known as monkeys so this is so talking about black people such as the President. So stop pretending like you don't know what that picture is saying cause you do everybody do. I'm not saying all white people just the racist ones. I know they are just laughing to this and it's not funny. Don't hate cause we have a black man that has all power of the US now get use to it cause he is going to have power for a while.

I think it is important to respect every human being. In addition, I think we owe it to our new president and his government to behave in a proper manner, especially where the media is concerned. Whether it was meant as a racist statement or not, I can certainly see how it would be taken as such. But it is dis-respectful, however it was meant.
We need to respect each other-especially when we don't want to. What would the world be like if we didn't? We need to respect boundaries. There are certain lines which should not be crossed.
& I am happy that we have out spoken leaders such as Reverend Al Sharpton. We need people like him to keep some people (who go too far) in check.

Leave it to the most controvesal black man in america to turn a funny cartoon into something racist. Its 2009 when is he going to quit playing that card and catch up with society. The fact that the new president might be the leader we need to climb out our rut is too often over shadowed by the color of his skin.

Al sharpton has no other talent excep to stir the pot. That is why most blacks belive all whites are rasict. Yet 60% of whites voted for obama. I did not vote for either so im part of the 40 % . Obamas wife menioned shes is not proud of america. So no vote there. Im also republican. But really did not like Mcain. Of course hes a hero . but, I felt he wasnt up to it either .This is the first vote I missed yet. This saber ratteling is what puts money in Al sharpton pocket. Thats all hes good for and thats why hes not president and the people no it.But, im sure he slept well tellng himself the rasism kept him out of the race. As far as im conserned hes the biggest racist of all. Grant you on occaision hes right about some things and everyone voice should be heard on real issues . But I bet having obama as president has comforted alot of black folks that whites and others do love them too! All im saying is he should pick the right fights and not pump things up. Im sure that cartoonist regrets not thiging it over before printing. Im sure Al makes sure of it too.
