Danny Gans Dies

5/1/2009 1:20 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Danny GansDanny Gans died early this morning, after a family member called 911 to say Danny was having trouble breathing. By the time paramedics arrived, he was dead.

A ticket rep at Steve Wynn's Encore hotel tells us they just got the call and the entire staff is "shocked and upset."

Gans is a legend in Las Vegas -- the self described "musical impressionist" signed a $150 million contract in 2000.

We're told Gans died at 3:00 AM at his home in Vegas. There are reports his wife discovered his body and called for help.

Gans was named "Las Vegas Entertainer of the Year" a record 11 times in a row. He did not perform last night.

Besides being a gifted entertainer, Gans was a pretty good athlete -- in fact, he was drafted by the KC Royals out of high school and played minor league ball.

UPDATE: TMZ has learned a 911 call was made by a family member at 3:44 AM for a 52-year-old man who was "having trouble breathing." By the time medics arrived, Gans had already passed away.

UPDATE: TMZ received the following statement from The Mirage, where Gans performed for years: "All of us in The Mirage family are deeply saddened to learn of Danny's passing. We all knew of his devotion to his family and our hearts and prayers are with his wife and children."

: Sources tell TMZ an autopsy will be performed by tomorrow. Results will be given when toxicology reports come back.

Shocked! He was extermely talented and gave a great great show. I remember being made to go watch his show in Vegas, not knowing who he was or what to expect. I sat there in the 12 or 13th row with my arms crossed, not thrilled to be there and by the end of his show, I along with everyone else in that theater, were standing up in the aisles begging for an encore. Great show...great guy. I pass my condolences to his family and friends at this very difficult time, he will be missed.

who has the facts? ME

Saw Danny in 2004 and 2006 at the Mirage - just an extremely talented "Mr. Las Vegas" kind of a guy. Another piece of old Las Vegas gone. Anyone driving down the strip could see his HUGE marquee at the Mirage until just last year, when he moved to the Wynn's "Encore" - his new show just started a few months ago. He had more talent than any of the "real celebrities" TMZ covers. If you didn't know who he was, I feel sad for you. And his charitible giving of both money and time is unsurpassed - how tragic, only 52 years old. Condolences to his wife and kids.

For all of you who post NEXT-DONT KNOW WHO IT IS, you are cruel. This man has just died, he has loved ones that care about him, and the last thing anyone would expect, is some STUPID lazy person to go out of their way to post something cruel with nothing to gain but hurt. When your friend or family member dies, and you are sad and try to tell someone, I hope they dont go NEXT! But then again, I kind of do you uneducated losers! RIP DANNY GANS!

He will be missed. Danny Gans was truly a class act and I think the lights on the Strip won't be quite as bright for a while. Our prayers and condolences to his family.

Well that just SUCKS! What a loss! This guy was crazy talented! His show would blow you away, as many of you out there already know and to the ones who never got to see it, you truly missed out on something extraordinary and special for sure! Las Vegas sure took a MASSIVE hit today for sure! RIP Danny and to his family, though you're most likely destroyed today, please take comfort in your loss, though not in the same way, is shared by so many people who wish you peace and will be praying for you at this difficult time.

Alot of Vegas performers resented the Danny Gans hype, especially Penn and Teller.Gans couldn't get arrested outside of Vegas, and many felt he didn't deserve the superstar status he enjoyed in that city.I'm sorry to learn he has died, but he was probably the finest example of how publicity and hype can override actual talent.

For all of those who keep asking "who is he?". He was a fabulous & very famous Vegas performer. It is obvious that if you have to ask that question, then you haven't been to Vegas. You need to get off of the computer & travel more often.
