Becoming a Man

The Process

6/11/2009 3:53 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Chastity BonoA lot is involved in the sex reassignment process. Here's the lowdown, according to Dr. Gary Alter from "Dr. 90210" -- he's an expert. Here's what Chastity Bono is going through right now.

-- First step ... A psychiatrist evaluates the patient. If appropriate, the doctor prescribes male hormones.

-- The hormones change the body makeup, which includes hair growth. The clitoris also grows larger.

-- Removal of breasts. Dr. Alter said most states will recognize the person as a male once this occurs. A hysterectomy can also be performed during this process.

-- Dr. Alter said the decision about changing the genitalia can take several years, while the patient is taking hormones. Dr. Alter says most people stop at this point.

-- Dr. Alter says if the patient goes forward, the surgeon often makes a small penis out of the clitoris and a scrotum by joining both labia majors. Testicle implants can then be inserted. The most sophisticated option is microsurgery in which skin, arteries and nerves are taken from the forearm and made into a phallus.

As for cost, Dr. Alter said it's all over the place, depending on how far the person wants to go. We've spoken to people who have had it done, and they say the full deal costs more than $100,000.

Chastity, good luck and hope you will be very happy. What a lot of
ignorant people don't stop to realize is, yes this is REAL. People
are born feeling as if they are in the wrong bodies. Who would just
CHOOSE that sort of personal hell ? No one. They are STUCK with it.
So people need to shut ,get a little compassion and try to imagine
what it's like. If you're a male, what would you feel like if
tomorrow you woke up but you were suddenly a woman ? Except in your
brain, you felt 100% as if you were still a man ? And vice
versa...any women out there, imagine waking up looking male but not
feeling male. And sex change people pretty much know they are
different from childhood on. It's hell, so quit acting as if they do
it because they want to be "weird" or that they give want to offend
"normal" people. Personally, I'm straight. But I have a family member
who is like Chastity. And I know what what they suffer through.
Problem with much of this world is, not enough people appreciate the
differences we have, or how much we really are alike {just wanting to
be happy and have a life... } and they don't stop to try to

there's a lot more to gender-identity than what is or isn't dangling between your legs. as the doctor stated, there are many trangendered people who do not alter their genitals at all and we don't know, nor is it really any of our business, what chaz plans to do. we all deserve to find out what makes us happy and to go for it regardless of what anybody else thinks.

Good grief...I don't care how she mutilates the gift God and her mother gave her...she still a girl...messed up as she may be...God intended her to be a girl...otherwise she'd be a boy. I did not think God made may appear so...but in hind is probably a test, and she failed.

I think this is really dumb. It's as if God made a mistake making her a woman.

It's very disheartening to see just how many ignorant people there are in the world. If only they could imagine for a moment that they were born with the wrong parts maybe then they could better understand the need to have one's body match how they feel and think inside, and perhaps there wouldn't be so much hate in this world. Transitioning isn't something one decides to do overnight. Like myself, I'm sure this is something that's been on Chaz's mind for many years; it's only now that he's finally decided to take the necessary steps to FINALLY have his outer shell match his insides. As Melissa Etheridge said "Change is turning into fear, Fear is melting into hate, With hate you justify your crime" and "I could've been you, You could've been me, One small change that shapes your destiny, If you want the proof, Cut me and you'll see, I could've been you, You could've been me". So before you judge Chaz for his decision, sit back and try to put yourself in his shoes and imagine what life could have been like if YOU had been born in the wrong body.

With regard to the comment about Chaz "mutilating" his body and "castrating" himself.... Basically, when it comes down to it, transgendered people try EVERYTHING they can to fit into what society deems "appropriate" for their birth gender (i.e. what one sees the person to be on the outside) prior to the point at which they FINALLY decide to take the necessary steps in order to make their physical bodies match their "internal" gender. Unfortunately, what it comes down to is there is no alternative to undergoing surgical procedures in order to accomplish this. One basically gets to the point of saying "enough is enough". It has nothing to do with God, religion, sexual preference, sexual arousal, or anything like that. But it DOES have EVERYTHING to do with making life for that individual more bearable. It comes to the point where the only alternative to transitioning is suicide. Think of it being your sister, your brother, your mother, your father, or someone you are very close to. Would you honestly want them to continue living a life in which they are totally unhappy, or have to attend their funeral because it got to be too much for them that they decided to take their own life, or would you want them to do whatever is necessary in order for them to be happy? When a person undergoes the surgeries, it's as if they are being reborn and are FINALLY free of the body they once despised because it wasn't a true reflection of who they are. Transgendered people come to a point in their lives where they have no other choice than to be true to themselves and to acknowledge that they were born in the wrong body, yet it is something they have to deal with. Fortunately, there are surgeons out there like Dr. Gary Alter and Dr. Marcy Bowers who hold the gift for helping transgendered people realize their true happiness. For anyone who is reading these comments and is open minded enough to learn more about transgender people and what they go through, I highly recommend the book called True Selves: Understanding Transsexualism--For Families, Friends, Coworkers, and Helping Professionals by Mildred L. It sells brand new on for $12.89. A small price to pay in order to shed your ignorance and learn something about this highly mis-understood topic of discussion.

These people can take all the hormones they want, have all the surgery in the world, call themselves anything they want, but one thing remains the same, and unchanged. Their D.N.A. never changes. In other words, a man will always be a man, and a woman will always be a woman.

I feel so sorry for her. She is obviously troubled. I used to envy her as a child but now I know she is way more dysfunctional than I ever thought my family was. So very sad and she is so pretty, too. Would be even more beautiful if she would lose the weight. I doubt she is happy, even if she 'becomes' a 'man'.

Transgender men are not lesbians trying to be straight, most lesbians are very proud to be women, but not a transgender. Some of them are straight before the transition and they are gay after the transition, since they are still attracted to men, before and after. Sexual behaviour is not the same as gender. And that's why being a man hasn't got much to do with just having a penis and having an erection, they are men every minute of their life, and if they lose their penis or don't have erections they don't feel as females. It is the same thing with transgendered men, they feel much more comfortable as males and are happier after their sex change. I know many and they feel much better.

The fact is most of these lesbians suffer from loss of libido latest in a couple of years. The sex life grinds to a halt (so called dead in the bed Syndrome ) .They resort to testosterone treatment anyway to have any meaningful sex life, the so called butcth lesbians. They begin to appear more and more masculine anyway. So deciding to go the whole hog becomes really tempting for the butch lesbian. What drama!
