Demi Moore's Twitter Stops Possible Suicide

3/19/2010 2:42 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Demi Moore's Twitter exchange with a suicidal 18-year-old may have helped save his life this morning ... but she's not the only actress who stepped up to help the guy out.

Demi Moore Twitter

Turns out Nia Vardalos from "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" called a suicide prevention center in Los Angeles after seeing Demi's grim exchange with the guy -- who was threatening to hang himself in a tree outside of his Florida home.

TMZ has obtained the phone call made between the suicide prevention center and Florida authorities during which Nia is patched in and tells cops everything she knows about the guy from the information on his Twitter account.

Cops were actually able to locate the guy using Nia's info -- and according to the police report, the guy was "sitting at his computer desk crying" when they found him.

Cops say the guy -- who admitted to needing medical help -- was placed under protective custody.

TWITTER: Narcissists heaven. I love how everytime some famous person dies, all the news organizations report about what Demi Moore thought. Why? Because they all run to her free Twitter account. SO LAME! Demi, WE DON'T CARE WHAT YOU THINK. You're a thespian, not a holy women. Same for your narcissist husband too. We don't care.

Well done Nia! Suicide is nothing to joke about.. You idot's making jokes about it. Mental Health is no different then Cancer.. I came within hours of loosing my daughter to a Tylenol overdose. She was in ICU for 10 days, on the list for a liver transplant. God took over and I still have her today. It's been a 4 1/2 year up hill battle of therapy. I thank God everyday her her life..

They aren't the first to do so. ANT the comic from last comic standing and Ross the Intern from The Tonight Show with Jay saved a fan many years ago by calling him. He had e-mailed ANT his phone number and ANT knew he was a fan of Ross as well so they got together and called him.

I met the young man not long after that. They saved him and changed his life for the better.

What a joke! The rich and famous, albeit with no talent, have nothing better to do than sit on twitter. Do you believe this garbage?! Hey, Eddie, she bought the boobs so guess anyone can have them if they have the $$$. Bruce paid for them! She's nothing.

Didn't this happen once before? Maybe she ought to parlay her waning movie career into a counseling career? I am not being sarcastic. She seems pretty good at this.

Good for Nia for calling it in. A lot of people think when people cry out for help like that, they can't be serious about committing suicide, but that's a myth. Even if they aren't serious, take it seriously, just in case. I also think it's good of Demi for replying to him instead of just assuming he was joking or looking for attention.

you people who are saying he should have just ended it now need a reality check! how insensitive and unhappy of a person do you have to be to want someone you have NO knowledge about to kill themselves? wow! the whys or hows dont matter. its a good thing when ANYONE stalls, steps in, helps, or does anything to keep a suicide from happening.

Maybe all of these D-List celebrities could get jobs at suicide prevention hotlines and make themselves useful for once instead of playing on Twitter all day tweeting about stupid sh1t like how they just woke up, the just got out of the shower, are getting ready to go to the grocery store and all their other pointless nonsense.
