Conan O'Brien on NBC-- It Was 'Toxic'

5/1/2010 1:21 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Conan O'Brien says he wouldn't have done what Jay Leno did to him -- and that there was nothing NBC could have done to repair his relationship with the network.

Conan sat down with "60 Minutes" to discuss the "Tonight Show" fiasco and how he felt he needed to part ways with NBC no matter how they went about things.

The full interview airs tomorrow night.

To the Leno Supporters on here, Try educating yourselves on why Conan left NBC. Google is your friend.

No wonder why the majority of people in America don't even know what Socialism means. Come on, I dare you all to tell me what socialism means. Betcha you can't even defend that let alone defend Leno.

He's talented but NOT that funny.

Maybe a better writer of "gags" than a HOST.

A lot of you have been saying, "Conan should stop complaining... he got paid". The problem wasn't about money... it was about being a stand up person... a man of your word... and Jay showed that he was neither. And that's why NBC has to pay people to speak on Jay's behalf... or wait, are NBC interns on a salary?

As big a Conan fan I am...he does come off as a whining baby when he criticizes Leno. Criticize NBC, sure..they screwed you over. But all Leno did was accept NBC's offer to have his job back.

It sucks that Conan had to leave but it was for a reason...his ratings were LOW as hell. NBC had no choice but to put Jay back. I hate that people were all mad at Jay when the news broke that he would be back at the Tonight Show and Conan would be gone. And they already replaced the host for the Late Night show with Jimmy. Too late for everything to go back to the way things were...I love all three hosts, I wish there was time for all 3 on NBC but there isn't. Not a big fan of Conan going to TBS... If I were George Lopez I'd be pissed.

. . .

As I remember it, Jay Leno spoke about this situation AT LENGTH more than 5 years ago... when NBC came to him and TOLD HIM that NBC would be handing over The Tonight Show from Leno in 2009 to Conan O'Brien.

Conan showed promise in the late-late night ratings: He was fresh, younger, hipper - and Jay had "run his course" (the NBC suits thought...) in late night.

NBC told Jay that "YOU WILL WALK AWAY" from TTS - he didn't GET a choice. Jay made it the subject of many, many many monologues over that 5 year period. He thought he could move on to something else... maybe he'd enjoy "forced retirement at the hands of the corporate suits" - but when it came time for Jay to leave, he really, really did feel he had done that badly - and his ratings reflected his opinion.

Leno was beating Letterman most every week. Nope, Joy was removed anyway, despite stellar ratings... and Conan stepped in. And delivered lower ratings. The NBC brass thought that he just needed to "catch-on" with the viewers... nope. Didn't happen. Letterman was beating him handily each and every single week...

Mean while, Jay was given more than enough time to prove himself in prime time... and couldn't pull in the ratings. So, NBC put the proven winner back into The Tonight Show... and put the proven WHINER back to pasture, with enough hay to last most of us mere mortals a lifetime.

Conan was offered the sun, moon and stars by NBC to walk away... even offered yet another late-late night show, right after TTS. NOPE: gimme what you told me I was gonna get... even though ratings fell...

Send the WHINER back to NYC - they can keep him.

Lesson learned: IF IT AIN'T BROKE - DON'T FIX IT (are you listening, NBC?).

I see NBC's crack astro-turfing squad has once again successfully filled page one of the comments with asinine anti-Conan comments. Funny how all the polls I've seen on the subject show people sympathize with Conan, yet every comment section on Conan stories gets bombarded immediately with the same pro-NBC/Jay bunk. Maybe NBC should spend the money they're using for astro-turfing on better programming instead.

Linda Hogan plz do porn!

Leno was failing the network at 10 o'clock. The company responded by relocating a bad employee at the expense of a productive employee. This happens frequently. It's happening as I type this to some skilled tradesman somewhere in America. The reasons can be nepotism, labor costs, or something else.

Conan is a self-made man who worships his creator. If he was half as good as he thinks he is he wouldn't be on cable.

Nope, I'm no corporate hack. Though I was born and raised in LA, I now live in IL... no connection to NBC whatsoever. Quitcherbitchin, King - Conan failed to deliver the goods, despite being handed a plume opportunity on a silver platter.

Now go back to your sandbox, like a good little boy... and take your toys and your attitude with you, too!

To those of you saying that Conan's ratings were the reason he's out...I think you're wrong. If you go back to the ORIGINAL story, NBC wanted to move JAY because HIS ratings were not so great. The affiliates wanted JAY to stop being their lead-in because it wasn't good for their nightly news. And by the way - Jay had 2 YEARS to boost his ratings - he was loosing to Letterman every night for awhile. Conan was only there for 6 MONTHS. This same thing happened to Jay, NBC wanted to put Letterman in front of him, but he fought it and it didn't happen. (Google it. It's a really interesting story). Yes, both Jay and Conan were kind of screwed over by NBC. But, this had nothing to do with Conan originally. A decision was made for him - without consulting him first. Which is why he did not take the TBS job until George Lopez was okay with it and called Conan himself.
