Jerry 'The King' Lawler: Jim Carrey Spat in My Face!

10/25/2010 3:55 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Jim Carrey was so intense about his portrayal of Andy Kaufman during the filming of "Man on the Moon" -- that he actually spat in Jerry "The King" Lawler's face on set ... this according to the wrestling legend himself.

1025_lawler_EX_launch

Lawler -- who famously "fought" with the real Andy Kaufman back in 1982 (see original smack talk video below) -- was in NY this morning and explained how Carrey's method acting technique led to a serious confrontation on set.

1025_andy_talks_mini_playerAccording to Lawler, Carrey desperately wanted "The King" to put him in a piledriver for a stunt in the movie ... but when "King" refused, Carrey (refusing to break character) flipped out and launched a loogie right in his face.

The spit-shot caused a firestorm on set, says Lawler, and the former wrestling champ explained that he was sure the outburst meant he'd be axed from the flick. Fortunately, he wasn't.

No word if Carrey ever apologized once he allowed himself to snap back to reality.

I've enjoyed watching Lawler for years. So many wrestling prima donnas now, and this guy always seems like a normal dude. Wish he'd pile drive Jim Carrey anyway.

Ummm...why is this here today? This was known news over a decade ago. Did I step in a time machine or something?

It would be pretty difficult to pile-drive someone without that person's cooperation unless you are overwhelmingly strong or large, and Lawler is neither.

Actually Lawler's making it up. He was in on the whole "event" now as he was then with the real Andy Kaufman.

He admitted as much in his autobiography. He's just still perpetuating the myth.

Andy Kaufman was a comic genius. I'd like to believe the fake death rumours are true :)

This movie is 11 years old. What's next, a story on Elly May and Jethro on the set of The Beverly Hillbillies? What's that sound? It's the sound of the bottom of the barrel being scraped.

I remember Kaufman and Lawler in lettermann when that stunt went down. Andy was too far ahead of his time.
