Jerry 'The King' Lawler: Jim Carrey Spat in My Face!

10/25/2010 3:55 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Jim Carrey was so intense about his portrayal of Andy Kaufman during the filming of "Man on the Moon" -- that he actually spat in Jerry "The King" Lawler's face on set ... this according to the wrestling legend himself.

Lawler -- who famously "fought" with the real Andy Kaufman back in 1982 (see original smack talk video below) -- was in NY this morning and explained how Carrey's method acting technique led to a serious confrontation on set.

1025_andy_talks_mini_playerAccording to Lawler, Carrey desperately wanted "The King" to put him in a piledriver for a stunt in the movie ... but when "King" refused, Carrey (refusing to break character) flipped out and launched a loogie right in his face.

The spit-shot caused a firestorm on set, says Lawler, and the former wrestling champ explained that he was sure the outburst meant he'd be axed from the flick. Fortunately, he wasn't.

No word if Carrey ever apologized once he allowed himself to snap back to reality.

To fully appreciate Kaufman, you'd have to have been a little kid when he was pulling his stunts. I grew up in the South and HATED the guy - of course, I thought wrestling was real, etc. and completely bought into the Letterman bit (stayed up late, as I would for SNL when it was funny).
Then you grow up and find out it was all an act - takes it to a whole new level :)
Last time I checked, Lawler was running for Mayor of Memphis or something - but he will always be the King of Memphis Wrestling. And unless they were using sky hooks, he did lift Andre the Giant and body slam him over his head. Still don't know how that was possible.
Anyway, greatest entertainer of my childhood - so who cares if it's a zillion years later. I'll take Lawler's acting over Carrey's any day of the week - and I think Carrey probably would, too.
