Golden Globes Sued for Fraud

1/13/2011 10:45 PM PST BY TMZ STAFF

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has just been slapped with a lawsuit -- days before the Golden Globes -- by a public relations firm that is claiming they were lied to and given the boot after 17 years of hard work.

Golden Globes Fraud

Cinepoint Productions claims it did publicity work for the Association for 17 years, taking the Golden Globes from irrelevance to prominence.

In fact, Cinepoint claims they did such a good job, the Globes were able to lock in a $26 million annual deal with NBC beginning in 2012  ... up from their previous deal, worth just $12 mil-a-year.

Cinepoint claims in the suit -- filed today in L.A. County Superior Court  -- it was promised when its contract with the Association expired in 2009 it would be renewed, and Cinepoint did a lot of hard work relying on the promise ... a promise it says was not honored.

Of course, it's Hollywood, and Cinepoint was unceremoniously kicked to the curb -- the contract was not renewed.

Cinepoint is suing for the fees it would have earned, $2 million, plus punitive damages.

UPDATE: A rep for the Golden Globes says the allegations are without merit ... and claims it's just a "case of a disgruntled former consulting firm, whose contract was not renewed."

Seriously? Their contract expired so their client has the option to renew it or NOT. They did their job well and they were PAID for such a job well-done. This is one of those ridiculous lawsuits clear aimed to rake in millions from "damages".

Hahahahahahahahahahaha!! The prime time to sue lol! Mind you the Golden Globes have become even more political and far more irrelevant, not really reflecting any real popularity of the films or acting skills these days! It's more a case of if you're in you're o.k, if they hate you you're stuffed even if your film and actors/actresses are the best in the world and the public agrees lol!!

Apparently, actor "John Dye" has died. He was on a show called "Touched by an Angel" for 8 years (angel of death), and also played the role of a medic on the "Vietnam" based series "Tour of Duty" (great show). He was 47 years.

#3 Uh, no, re-read it lol!! They're suing for $2mil UNPAID work
done under the understanding their contract would be renewed and punitive damages for their failure to not renew the contract!
They can change their p.r firm once this contract was expired, sure, but they can't get a p.r firm to do work on the promise the contract was being renewed and get away scot free lol!! The firm says they'd never have taken on the $2 mil worth of work if they knew the contract wasn't being renewed! Business has to have some ethics to it and if it doesn't when the company gets sued they get to cough up lol!!

Hmmm, Cinepoint aka The Michael Russell Group handled last year's 2010 Golden Globes (I guess w/o a contract??) They were the ones that made the call not to have overhead protection for the all important red carpet. Rain had been forecast for days and umbrellas had to be used. Celebrities' dresses were soaked -- IT WAS A DISASTER & A JOKE!

If you google either company name for them, you'll see that there are "claims" against them for "alleged promises that were never kept."

I guest KARMA at work??

The Golden Globes Awards show was never really that big of a deal until about 20 years ago- before that, it wasn't even broadcast on network TV.

Interesting! I hope Cinepoint has some sort of do***entation to support its' claims because they are going to require more than just a verbal acknowledgment to collect their fees. You can't do business in this day and age without written do***entation along with a solid paper trail from those who have the actual authority to make contract approval decisions.
