Regis Philbin

Quit Over Pay Cut

1/22/2011 11:00 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF

Regis Philbin quit his show after execs told his agent they would cut his salary when his current contract expired ... sources tell TMZ.

Sources connected with the show tell TMZ ... Regis' agent, Jim Griffin, was talking with execs from the ABC station group about a new contract for Regis when his current deal expired.  We're told the honchos made it clear ... Regis would be getting a pay cut, partly because the show is not performing as well as in the past ... and partly because he takes a lot of time off.

Sources say Reeg is currently pulling in between $18 and $20 million a year.

Regis, we're told, was angry at the offer and that was the trigger for his announcement this week that he's leaving the show.

TMZ first reported ... Regis told Kelly Ripa about his decision 15 minutes before they went on the air.  Initially we were told she was stunned but not angry.  Now we've learned she was furious -- partly because, as one source says, "She felt it showed a total lack of respect for her."

We're told the entire production team is angry at Regis because they feel he hurt the show by blindsiding everyone.

As for Regis' agent, Jim Griffin, Reeg fired him.  We're told Regis feels Griffin did not negotiate the upcoming deal effectively.

The time has come for Regis to just let it go. He needs to retire and enjoy the rest of his life. He still retires as a very rich man.

give me a break he's complaining about his pay? What is he a rocket scientist? cancer reasearcher? the president of the US? He would be overpaid at 100K a year.

this is a guy who never acknowledges his first family, the one he had before he married Joy. He goes on about Joy and his kids with her but before he made is big he had another family that he left and did not support. He is not a nice man because of this! This has been well do***ented in the media. He deserves to have a rotten life like he gave his first family that he deserted! And his ego is bigger than the stand up man he should of been. Shame on him!

if this story is really accurate, then I have lost my respect for Regis. And I can't believe he makes that much money! What a diva!

I'd fill in for him but I'll be damned if I'm going to settle for any less than 18 million.

I haven't bothered to watch that show in years. Regis seems to me to be a very full of himself, thinks he's very funny, elitist, stuck-up, jerk. Most rich people are. The doctors and nurses who saved his life when he underwent open heart surgery have all taken paycuts and faced insurance premiums skyrocketing. I'm sure the underlings that make his show function have taken paycuts and financial disasters and he couldn't care less, much less give any of them help. And all he cares about Kelly is that she is pretty and makes him look good. So, who cares about this old loser anyway? Kick him to the curb and ...NEXT

He comes across totally OVERPAID and full of himself. How many people could use a job like his? Hopefully whoever replaces him will be more appreciative of the opportunity offered.

Dear Regis:
Poor baby, I feel for you, 18 to 20 Million per year? Good grief, that is just enough to purchase groceries LOL.

I don't believe the people attacking Regis for not renewing his contract.
The guy is 78 1/2 years old which is well beyond retirement age even in Obamaland.
He has had two heart operations. His "children" range in age from 26 1/2 to 50 so he doesn't need to work.
The network complains that he misses too much work? After his one heart surgery, he was back on the air in THREE DAYS.

Face it, will you be able to work 5 days a week if you are lucky enough to live to be 78 1/2? I really doubt it.

How many TV personalities are still on the air 5 days a week at his age?
Even **** Clark, though he is 81 years old, stopped doing daily TV when he was 59. After that he only did weekly and special programs like his New Years Rocking Eve Show.
Even Art Linkletter who was on TV for 88 years, only did weekly series with The Art Linkletter Show running 25 years and concurrently People are Funny running 19 years. So his weekly shows ran until he was 63 years old and after that spot appearances on specials and other programs. So in 25 years Art did 1,848 episodes while Regis has done over 1,400 episodes of Live with Regis alone. Add 368 episodes of Millionaire.

In fact, in his 46 years on TV he has appeared 17,000 hours.
that is equal to 68 years if appearing 1 hour per day for 250 days a year, the normal work days per year not counting vacation and sick days. Most people get at least two weeks vacation, and using that, he would have worked almost 71 years. Since we know he has been on TV for "only" 46 years, he actually averages more than 1 1/2 hours per day on TV.

Everyone says Walter Cronkite is the "Uncle Walter" of TV.
But he only appeared as CBS News anchor from 1962-1979. At 1/2 hours per day that is only 2,160... hours. Regis has been on TV almost 15,000 hours more than Walter. Even adding in his specials and reporting from 1950 until he became anchor in 1962, he still has only a fraction of the hours on air that Regis has.
Even Johnny Carson, who spent 1 1/2 hours a night for 30 years was on TV 6,000 hours LESS than Regis.
