Little People Sue 'The Soup'

They Defamed Us!

3/29/2011 10:40 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

A  dwarf couple is suing E! Entertainment and "The Soup" host Joel McHale, claiming they made scurrilous, false, defamatory and hurtful comments about them.

Cara and Gibson Reynolds are dwarfs who struggled for years to have children. One child died a day after birth, but they were finally able to conceive a healthy baby.

The Reynolds' did an interview with the Associated Press about dwarf couples who want to screen their embryos for genetic defects in an effort to intentionally have healthy, dwarf children.  They say the article and photo of them was limited to the AP article (reprinted on

Fast forward to 2009, when McHale and company did a spoof on "The Soup" titled, "Fertile Little Tattooed Pageant Parents Who Enjoy Baking."  McHale said it was the newest reality show, and then proceeded to show the AP photo of the Reynolds, saying they are "happy dwarfs ... that can't stop procreating."

And it got worse.  "The Soup" then allegedly showed a woman purported to be Cara in labor, in the process of giving birth in a bathroom.

Cara claims the piece was so upsetting, she suffered, "depression, insomnia, upset stomach, sleep interference and experiencing feelings of shame and degradation."

The Reynolds are suing for defamation and invasion of privacy.

We could not immediately reach E! for comment.

this couple did an interview with the associated press, it wasn't for tv, like people have been saying! They didn't WHORE themselves out for money. They were doing an interview about infertility. I totally see why they are upset. The soup was totally in bad taste and out of line to go with that storyline/joke. And some of joke comments about "small" claims court and a "little" upset, seriously,, grow up!

Jokes about something a person had no choice, other than accepting, is only funny to people with below standards, who have the ability to change.

Your day may come when you, or someone close to you, will experience like cruelty. That is not a wish, but a probability.

What a bunch of retarded midgets! The Soup is the best show on TV and they can do spoofs on any of these people that go on TV and put themselves in the public eye. What a joke they are. I'm just glad they are going to spend tens of thousands of dollars before their stupid lawsuit gets tossed out of court. Joel McHale is by far the funniest guy on TV. These midgets can't get back on TV any other way, so they think suing The Soup will get them publicity, which TMZ has obvioulsy given them. If they could win this suit, it would put The Soup, TMZ TV, Saturday Night Live and a hundred other shows out of business. Sorry, in America it doesn't work that way. Go back to Umpa Lumpa Land where it is illegal to make fun of a midget.

"...healthly, dwarf children"????

Isn't that an oxymoron. Bad growth genes are NOT healthy.

This couple were courageous to share their story about the risks of conception for little people. To imply they did so only to make a buck shows how cruel this world is to those with physical differences. They display more courage in their everyday lives than most of us will ever know. I tell my daughter who is a little person everyday to not take crap from anybody! I applaud this couple for standing up and demanding respect.

I think all prospective parents should screen their embryos for genetic defects in an effort to intentionally have healthy, midget children. This would help with the economic crisis cause they could built smaller houses and cars.

I am opening an all-you-can-eat restaurant for midgets only.

I am going to stop watching E! and NBC's Community-featuring Joel McHale. This is discrimination towards people with dwarfism and I refuse to patronize anybody that participates in or supports this type of behavior, whether they are comedians/comediennes or not. I am glad that they are standing up for their rights. They need to get a hold of Verne Troyer, Verne probably would do an unexpected walk on during a taping of The Soup and rip into Joel McHale.

Though it aired a year and a half ago, I actually remember this segment on "The Soup" clearly. Joel was making fun of ALL TLC programming, the fertile part refers to the people in Arkansas with 19 kids and counting, pageants was obviously about "Toddlers and Tiaras", tattoos was about the Kat Von D lady, and on and on. It wasn't a knock on them it was making fun of TLC! This will be thrown out of court.

I call bull****. You voluntarily put yourself in the limelight having a show, but you get offended by how a show portrayed you? If you can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen.

If you're in the limelight you will get hurt. This is hollywood, that's how it works. If you can't handle it then move on. So you're feelings get hurt and you want to sue... give me a break!
