6/11/2011 11:30 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Top Democratic leaders are now calling for the resignation of Congressman Anthony Weiner, saying his recent scandal is "an unacceptable distraction."

House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi says Weiner is in need of help and should seek some "without the pressures of being a member of Congress."

Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz released a statement today saying, "It is with great disappointment that I call on Representative Anthony Weiner to resign. The behavior he has exhibited is indefensible and Representative Weiner's continued service in Congress is untenable."

She continued, "This sordid affair has become an unacceptable distraction for Representative Weiner, his family, his constituents and the House -- and for the good of all, he should step aside and address those things that should be most important -- his and his family's well-being."

For every law maker calling for Weiner's resignation, I'd like to know their public stance during the Clinton scandal.

What Clinton did was worse. Actually sex (yes, it was sex). In the Oval Office. During office hours. With a young subordinant. The he LIED. And lied more. And continued to lie.

She sucks. The bitch want him to resign when in fact he didn't do anything that hurt or effect anyone while she tolerates others who robe and rape people out of their whole lives and never hear her speak of them.

I also tolerate others who robe people. They mostly work at Caesar's Palace.

He said he won't leave and that the people of NY want him to stay. lol
New Yorkers are the worst and NYC is a toilet.
Those losers can have him.

@Truth:

You say that an American city of 10 million people is a toilet and New Yorkers are all losers and the worst?

You are demented. You're the loser, you're the worst and your brain is a toilet. Shame on you! You need treatment more than Weiner. Electroshock treatment or a lobotomy might help you.

Nancy Pelosi has no other reason to comment other than to get her face time on this matter. Wiener did nothing out of the extraordinary ... so he took a picture of his wiener, what else is new? He is not being called to resign by his constituents, so why does Pelosi think he needs to resign. The only people making a bigger deal about this is the Democrats themselves. What will they gain by him leaving? They need all the House Dems they can get at this point if SHE ever thinks of being the House leader again... so to NP - SHUT UP! You're a has-been, in the House right now so just get your face and your words off the front page - your 15 minutes are UP!

New york wanted to keep him because he was so effective....whose going to take him seriously now? Which bills will he be able to get voted upon? How much respect will his district get from Washington?

You want him to stay? Be very careful for what you wish for!

In response to His Prince Michael -
Nothing for nothing, but there is also the statement that says "if the government fails to work on behalf of the people, then the people have the right to overthrow said government" - I don't see that happening anytime soon either...so give the guy a break, or call out the offenses of everyone else as well...

Based upon the apparent standard set by other politicians:
As a nation founded, unquestionably, upon Judeo-Christian Principles,
The House of David calls for the immediate en masse resignations
of ALL "governmental" officials - "elected" and "appointed" -
who have willfully, knowingly, and openly engaged in immoral
and/or unnatural activities or practices during their official
tenure. WITHOUT, EXCEPTION.

Since when does someone's family play a role in why they wany him to resign. There is alterior motive why they want him out. Bill Clinton's indiscretions's was never too much for the Democrats to handle.

Maykaygal...Oddly, we are in semi-agreement:
It's the sheer and shameless hypocrisy of immoral, corrupt,
and special-interest serving politicians circling around
the remains of another's career, that equally appalling.

While, your suspiciously lascivious happy-ending is noted,
it is, a pure and righteous Happier BEGINNING that undoubtedly
is not within your comprehension.

President Clinton repeatedly had sex in the Oval Office with an intern, lied about it, Hillary lied about it, but he got away with it, and he is respected today. Mr Weiner is entitled to privacy and not be Psycho analyzed in the public arena. I would like to know of any one who has never done something naughty, Americans in general are basically sex-phobic, and need to direct their criticism to issues regarding how ****** up this country is becoming. Mr Weiner, don't be ashamed of your sexuality.
Peace is a worthy priority!

For a minute there, I thought we were talking about the Republican party with all this censorship nonsense. Since when are Democrats railing against personal freedoms? Whatever this man did in the privacy of his home is his business. This has nothing to do with politics or the public's insatiable 'need to know'. What is unacceptable is the attention everyone is giving this and the legitimacy people think it has in booting him from office when it's irrelevant. Lets get back to the issues, people. Democrats don't need to use this as an excuse to not focus on the real issues, too.
