Roger Ebert BLASTS Ryan Dunn for Drunk Driving

6/20/2011 11:43 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Ryan Dunn hasn't even been dead for a day yet -- and film critic Roger Ebert is already ripping the late "Jackass" star for boozing before getting behind the wheel  ... tweeting, "Friends don't let jackasses drink and drive."

Ryan Dunn Drunk
TMZ broke the story ... Dunn's drinking buddy claims Ryan had at least 3 beers and 3 shots before hitting the road in his Porsche.

Obviously, Ebert has a point -- but we gotta ask ...

If he had been alone in the car, then this would be too soon. Instead, he had a passenger and was out drinking with friends before the crash. You don't have to be legally drunk to have alcohol affect your ability to drive. Even a single drink has been shown to decrease your reaction time. It's sad that he took someone out with him when he made the very jackass-ish decision to drink and then drive.

Ebert's right. Enabler's let enabler's drink and drive. True friendship is a beautiful caring thing.Where people look out for what's best for one another.

Someone just lost their son...it hasn't been said whether or not alcohol was a factor...too soon? yeah your kinda jumping the gun there...wouldn't you feel like a jacka** if he wasn't drunk? This is sad anyway you look at it...a little respect people.

Too soon? Absolutely not!! Its too late! If in fact he was drunk at the time of the accident, he should burn in hell. He took an innocent life and destroyed a nice car and public property. Hope he had good insurance, because his family is gonna get sued big by the other persons family. We all know that drinking and driving is bad, yet people continue to do it. Maybe we need to bring back prohibition in the US to keep idiots from hurting themselves and others.

Wow..At least have some f***en respect. The man just passed for gods sake!

Curious Curious

Is Ebert ripping Ryan or is he ripping the folks that let Ryan drive after drinking? Seems to me he's ripping the friends of the Jackass star for letting him drive after drinking. Open to interpretation?

alessandra alessandra

That may be the case, But come on the poor guy has not even been dead a day, and the fact that we don't even know his blood level yet, what a ass have a heart

He is right!! And it's not too soon....more people need to hear this before they end up dead or killing an innocent person!!!! There is no excuse, ever for this!!!!!

Ebert is being his usually witty self - his comment makes him sound like a jackass - that's the point - it's an homage to Ryan Dunn. Get it?

While Ebert is annoying as hell and nobody even gives a **** about his reviews anymore, he is right. If drinking was the cause, Ryan is at fault for killing not only himself but another passenger. Too soon isn't even a factor in that scenario.

--------------------

Ryan may be at fault, but that isn't what Ebert said. Ebert said Ryan's friends were at fault.

I always thought Ebert had more class than this, and he's proving to be just another shallow, stupid attention whore. Too bad.

I have to agree with Roger Ebert. I thought it was a funny statement. I am sorry to hear that Ryan Dunn passed away though I don't know who he is. He was old enough to have known better. Drinking & driving kills. I do send out condolences to his family & friends.

I don't think Ebert was calling him a jackass literally. Seems as if he was referring to Dunn as a character in the move title's in which in starred in.

I have a 700 horsepower toyota supra and I would never even think about getting behind the wheel of a car like that after even after just a couple of bears. Car like that can kill you in the blink of a eye if you are not very very carefull and that is when you are totally sober. So when you drink, you are crazy to get behind the wheel of any car, let alone one with 500+ horsepower. Rest in peace and God Bless

The bottom line is he was drinking before he got behind the wheel o*****t3(very fast car) and had a wreck that no only killed him, but someone else that did not deserve to die.
Just like that douchebag, hulk hogans son who basically killed
a war hero and then wanted to get out of jail to make some
cash in a "real-ality show". We will never learn, so sad this **** has to happen.

Ebert is just a battered wife who is just now opening after the spouse has passed. It's ok Roger, let it all out. Gene can't hurt you now.

It sucks when someone makes the choice to drink and drive but at the same time do you really think the person that was in the passenger seat didn't know he had been drinking or that the passenger himself wasen't drunk or drinking as well? Not saying that it is ok in either case but when your an adult you make choices for yourself and if you choose to get in a vehical with someone that has been drinking your putting your life at risk.

"The truth hurts, sure not as much as jumping on a bicycle with the seat missing, but it hurts." Good for you Roger Ebert.

All of you people saying "this is what happens when you drink and drive" are morons, you may not know why you're morons, but you are. Good to see Roger Ebert doesn't care about speeding provided you don't drink.

Because Ryan Dunn was driving at over 100mph. Because mechanical failure, such as tire blowout, has not being ruled out. Because there's an ongoing investigation.

It's not even as if you're saying "this is what happens when you drink drive, and speed at over 100mph on a road, because, to be fair, either could have killed him".

Because that would be a compound sentence, and your thoughts aren't that long. Clearly drink could be to blame, but until the investigation concludes it's not that simple, sorry. As far as I am concerned someone who drives at over 100mph on a road is as reckless as someone who drives drunk. But you haven't thought about it like that because you're too stupid.

Always has to be a simple reason, even before the dust settles.

This ass Ryan Dunn live his life by the sword and died by the sword. That a-hole could have killed other people with his jackass decision to drive after he drank so much. This is just like that son of Hul Hogan driving like an a-hole with a car that had over 600 hp and now his friend is paralyed or dead by now. That Dunn gets what he deservers.. DEAD

Reggie,

If it were my son or loved one, I'd be devasted at his death, of course. I'd also be embarrassed at his drunk driving behavior, horrified that he killed someone else because he was driving drunk.

Someone else here said we should show a little respect for him because he's dead. What?..... respect him for voluntarily drinking until he's so impaired he cannot see he shouldn't be driving?! Respect him for killing someone else? What should I be showing him respect for????

Not in this lifetime, honey - he deserves no respect AT ALL. I'd never disrespect his family in person but here on this blog where everyone thinks they have freedom to tell it like it is, I'm saying my piece.

It is 2011. EVERYONE knows about drinking and driving is dangerous and illegal.

He did it. His responsibility. Too damn bad. Tough nuts.

Own it, Ryan.

There is one good thing that will come out of this: Ryan Dunn will never be able to get drunk and kill anyone again. Small comfort.

At least now he cannot ever kill anyone else with his irresponsible behavior.
