'Swamp People' Star -- Bad Heart Threatens Career

7/18/2011 3:25 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

The most beloved star of the hit reality show "Swamp People" is in danger of missing Season 3 after a serious heart condition almost took his life earlier this year ... TMZ has learned.

0718-swamp-people-ex

It's not Troy ... or Trapper Joe ... or the badass Guist Brothers -- it's Bruce Mitchell's faithful sidekick Tyler ... the lovable gator hunting dog.

TMZ spoke to a rep for Bruce -- the guy who rocks the overalls and the American flag bandana -- who tells us Tyler was having "heart troubles" back in January ... and had to be rushed to the vet for emergency medical care.

We're told things got so bad "the dog almost died."

Luckily for Tyler, doctors were able to treat the illness ... and he's been resting at home and taking heart meds ever since.

The rep tells us Bruce is unsure if Tyler will be able to join him on the boat next season ... saying Bruce is "hopeful...but still not sure."

That dog has the worst luck. Dodging gators in the swamp overnight, and now he has a bad ticker.

OMG. That dog can't die. He's the only one on the show with an IQ above plant life. Oh, wait, the gators are up there, too.

I remember a time when the Discovery channel used to be filled with awesome shows about science, history, space, aviaton etc. Now it's more and more reality TV crap. Same with TLC, man did they totally destroy the Learning Channel and turn it into a crappy reality tv channel for women.

Funny that this story should pop up today. I've been thinking
about the swamp people ever since Casey Anthony was re-
leased! What a perfect job opportunity for her - be a replacement
Bitch for Tyler. And after he and the rest of the tribe were thru
having their way with her, leave her in the swamp for gaterbait!
Feel free to jump in Puckett- I can here the wheels clicking from

hopefully they'll put the dog on heartworm preventative, which it should have been on already. I'm glad Tyler didn't pay the price for his owner's ignorance.

Everybody who loves their dogs should have them on Heartguard 12 months a year! Protection is the best medicine. Get well soon Tyler.

All the best to this beautiful dog. I pray Tyler recovers and lives a long healthy life. Better he's not on a hot boat all day gator hunting anyway. Too dangerous for the dog if you ask me. God love you Tyler.

Awww poor Tyler! I would feel so bad if he were to die. That is Bruce's BEST FRIEND...he can't go anywhere. I just saw a marathon of Swamp People and I fell in love with Tyler-he's so smart and clever. Well I hope he recovers soon and gets back to work.

I know, unfortunately the History Channel is slowly suc***bing to the made for TV "reality TV" plague too...but TLC and Discovery have been the ones leading the way with this garbage.

It's pretty comical they still call TLC "The Learning Channel". They have about as much to do with learning as MTV does music. lol

At least History still shows a few shows about history. The civil war, how the states got their shapes, etc. TLC on the other hand has been a reality TV wasteland for years now. Medical room "reality tv", Jon & kate, the duggards, the roloffs the etc. etc. etc., who cares about these people? lol

The channel names are just a legacy to what their programming used to be about. It's all reality TV now.

Speaking of which where the hell is the new season of Top Gear US and Gold Rush already??? Com'on History! It's been forever since the first season aired.

Another beef of mine, since when the hell is a "new season" 6 freaking episodes and it's back to reruns again? The "seasons" on these shows are getting shorter and shorter.
