West Memphis 3 Case

Eddie Vedder, Natalie Maines

Arrive at Court for Support

8/19/2011 8:30 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

0819_eddie_natalie_BN
All three members of the West Memphis 3 arrived at the Craighead County Courthouse in Arkansas moments ago ... where at least TWO of the men are expected to be granted their release from prison.

Two huge celebrities have also arrived at the courthouse to support the men ... Dixie Chicks singer Natalie Maines and Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder.

The WM3 -- comprised of Damien Echols, Jessie Misskelley and Jason Baldwin -- were found guilty of killing 3 boy scouts in 1993. Misskelley and Baldwin were sentenced to life in prison. Echols was sentenced to death.

The case became a cause célèbre over the years after new evidence surfaced ... raising serious doubts as to whether the WM3 actually killed the three young boys.

The WM3 had maintained their innocence for years ... but according to local reports, two of the men are expected to "admit guilt" during today's hearing in exchange for their freedom.

Story developing ...

Wow, great to see so many intelligent people responding to this news(for the idiots that are still around that was sarcasm, btw). These three men were innocent right from the start-if you'd watched the do***entaries or read the books you'd understand. This is a great day for the justice, because w rong was finally righted. those of you that think otherwise don;t know what the **** you're talking about. And for those of you giving **** to Eddie Vedder and Natalie Maines, typical redneck propaganda. these two have been involved in this case for years, spejding alot of time and resources to bring attention to this travesty of justice. You seem to have enough time an energy to sling arrows at people trying to do something positive, maybe you could use that energy to fill out a job application and try to do something constructive with your life. Also, kudos to Henry Rollins-he alos deserves a ton of credit for shedding light on this issue.

I had never heard of the case til tmz broke the story.
So, I got curious...and went here to read up on a web page devoted to it, and a synopsis of the events.
http://wm3.org/CaseIntroduction/Page/DAN-STIDHAMS-CASE-SYNOPSIS
go read it, you'll be disgusted at how desperate and unprofessional the cops were for a conviction

Oh, boy....hope TMZ will show the REAL truth on this case, which will be unusual. Nothing has been mentioned anywhere about Damien Echols' mental health, or the fact that at the time of these murders he had been locked up numerous times for his mental problems, which included threatening to slit his grandmother's throat and threatening to kill and eat his father. He also had an imaginary male friend who would come and visit him at night and who Damien planned to "survive the end of the world" with. Yea, that's a guy convicted because he dressed in black and listened to metal...right. Serve us up another round of that BS....

my comment relates more to the way the article is written is written than the content - "comprised" is never used with "of"; you would write that something is "composed of" or that it "comprises" but never "comprised of".

Just an editor's pet peeve.

In actuality, they're not admitting guilt. They're conceding that the state had enough evidence against them for a conviction while maintaining they're innocent. It's a deal that protects the state from lawsuits in exchange for the guys' freedom. That said, God help anyone who needs Eddie Vedder and Natalie Maines for moral support.

For those confused...what they did was enter what are called Alford please. In this plea, the defendant admits that the state has enough evidence to secure a conviction, but still maintains innocence of the crime. It's like saying "Yes, I know you have sufficient evidence to find me guilty, but I'm still stating that I'm innocent."

In any case, that the State would allow this, it sounds to me like they are not convinced that they would win if the case was retried.
