Serena Williams

Cited For Verbal Abuse

9/12/2011 9:48 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Serena Williams has been cited for verbally abusing the ref during her U.S. Open match Sunday.

Now the US Open referee is investigating Serena Williams for her outburst -- and, worst case scenario, she could be banned from future tournaments.

Serena -- who lost against Samantha Stosur in straight sets -- flew off the handle during the match ... blasting the ref over a call, shouting, "If you ever see me walking down the hall, look the other way because you're out of control. You're a hater and you're unattractive inside. Who would do such a thing? Wow."

The referee will pass along the findings of the investigation to the Tournament Grand Slam Committee, which will decide what discipline, if any, is appropriate.

It's interesting ... Serena's outburst pales in comparison to tennis legend John McEnroe.  True enough, McEnroe has been fined and suspended for his outbursts, but they almost seem on another level.

11:54 AM: US Open referee Brian Earley just fined Serena $2,000 for the outburst -- but that's a drop in the bucket ... because she earned a grand total of $1.4 MILLION during the tournament.

According to the US Tennis Association, "Williams' conduct ... does not rise to the level of a major offense."

Isn't all that grunting what leads to yelling across the net, too? If I ever watch tennis I watch with the sound turned off. It's intimidating to their opponent and that's why they do it.

Typical incomplete story. We don't know what the ref said. If its on the video--I don't have time for commercials. Do a complete story, TMZ.

She's being treated differently because she's black - they're afraid to touch her for fear of the race card, obviously! They need to impose a hefty fine and suspend her from a game or two! WoMAN thinks she's untouchable. Sheesh, so damn sick of the double standards in this freakin country!

Whether it's a double standard or not is up for debate. If McEnroe were playing today and did the same thing and was not fined, then yes I'd say that it's absolutely a double standard. Serena acted inappropriately. I understand that she was pumped bc she was playing for the title but that doesn't give her the right to talkt to the umpire like that. Plus it's just stupid b****....she could be fined. And she was. She should have challenged the decision. She would have found that she was wrong but that would have been the better way to go about it. I love the Williams sisters but I don't like that type of behavior. There is a level of sportsmanship that goes on in individual sports that you won't find in football, basketball, baseball or hockey. She knows better. Just hoping she goes home has a little talk with herself and says "self...chill out."

It is about time Serena and Venus BOYCOTT and stop playing for the US and the US Open and concentrate on the other grand slam... they are treated much better and with more respect....The Wimbledon love having Venus and Serena play in England!!!!!! Just imagine you did not play for a year and you get seeded 7th in Wimbledon and you play and won two series in the US and get seeded 28th steups what does that say!!!!!!!!!!!

That umpire deserved it due to her insane ruling.
Serena got a point penalty when she was saving break point.

It seems to me that the racists on here are just mad because they can't own slaves anymore. I'm sorry that you losers can't use racial slurs freely anymore and that you have to get on the internet and pound out your agressions.

What Williams said could be construed as a threat--big difference; if she had just questioned the call, etc., she probably would not have been fined. Yes, McEnroe was a hothead, and was fined for his outbursts; Connors, Nastase and others also paid the same price. But he was also a fair player who would "even the score" if a bad call went his way.

While her outburst wasn't as dramatic as what John was famous for, when you tell someone to "look the other way" when they see you walking down the hall, Isn't that a threat? If so, then yes, it is more serious than John yelling at and calling a ref "stupid."
