'American Hoggers'

Under Attack

for Ultra-Violent Pig Slaughter

The gun-toting family on A&E's new reality show "American Hoggers" are under fire from an animal rights group for the gruesome way the pigs are "tied up and shot" on the show ... TMZ has learned.

In case you haven't seen it -- "American Hoggers" follows Jerry "Hog Boss" Campbell ... and his family as they hunt and kill feral pigs ... armed with hunting dogs and guns. It's pretty graphic ... even for A&E.

The show just premiered this week -- and it didn't take long for PETA to take notice. In fact, the animal rights org. has just released a statement saying, "the Campbells' show promotes cruel animal-control measures and gross mistreatment of wildlife."

PETA claims it acknowledges that feral pigs can be problematic in parts of Texas, but the group says, "If property owners insist on lethal control, then feral hogs should be cage-trapped and afforded a quick, painless death."

We reached out to A&E for comment, and so far haven't received a response.

** WARNING -- the clip is very graphic **

No problem with killing feral pigs (they have no qualms about killing YOU!), but cruelty in any form is not acceptable. Folks who enjoy killing and inflicting pain are worse than the pigs. Same for any other deadly animals, sometimes you hafta kill them in order to survive, doesn't mean you should enjoy it.

Sadly there are some "Yee Haws" here that make it a sport but most do not take care of this real problem by glorifying it up for the cameras. Gosh will reality TV ever end? Most are trapped at night. I see a problem with trophy hunting (wild hog populations is a real problem) and hate that anyone would make a buck or gain any fame from death. More proof that inbreeding in humans is just wrong.

I'm against animal cruelty but those feral pigs are destructive and dangerous so I have no problem with eradicating them. I find it amusing that they use subtitles every time the old man talks although I can understand most of what he is saying. Is A&E insulting him by using them or is there something odd with me?

I knew this was going to happen when I watched the premiere of this show. Yes they tie them up and its a once shot to the head, they die immediately, or close to it.
Is there a more humane way? Sure tie them all up, cart them around to a place that will gas them or euthanize them.
With it being on TV I think the later options should prevail for all the obvious reasons Peta lists.
Even though they have to keep control of these hogs for the safety of children, other animals etc. the actually reality of how most of these hogs get eliminated doesnt have to be show on TV. Most property owners shoot them themselves after tracking them down. This is a reality of living in more rural areas, hogs, mountain lions etc.
So a reality show certainly CANT be reality, lol, so do in the more humane way with gas or injections.

PIG=FOOD. Does PETA care that, that pig is going to feed people in need?? Of course not, they are a bunch of nuts who believe animals should be saved because they are going to be our next president!! the hell with PETA

While I am not against farming and ranching, this is just disgusting and shows how ignorant these people are. What kind of professional farmers/ranchers act like this? Professional farmers take pride in treating their herds with dignity and respect and not like a bunch of inbred hillbilly idiots right out of "Deliverance." Shame on them and shame on the state that approves their business practices. Good for PETA making this known.

Welcome to the real world, folks. This is hunting the way it has always been done, whether with guns or with bows and arrows. It's not pretty but it has to be done to properly manage wildlife.

I don't trust anything PETA says. They are the biggest animal killers of all. All of these stars should stop promoting them. If PETA thinks it's wrong, then I'm going to say the show should go on.
