Baltimore Ravens' Kicker

Distracted Before Botched

Field Goal Attempt

1/23/2012 11:06 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF

a sad Billy Cundiff
Billy Cundiff -- the Baltimore Ravens' kicker who botched the kick that could have kept the team's Super Bowl dream alive -- was distracted before his field goal attempt ... to the point that coaches were yelling at him.

Two players on the team have spoken with TMZ -- one of whom says he witnessed the confrontation and another who did not witness it but says it is being widely discussed among Ravens players.

Our sources say ... immediately before Cundiff attempted the game-tying FG, he was doing what he was supposed to do -- practicing kicking on the sidelines.  But as the Ravens marched down the field, Cundiff was unaware that his time to kick was looming.

It's S.O.P. for kickers to walk toward the field when the time approaches for them to kick -- ready to run into the game.

According to our sources, coaches repeatedly called for Cundiff -- at least 6 times -- to no avail -- he wasn't responding.  We're told the coaches became "furious" because Cundiff wasn't ready to go.

Our sources say players and coaches are saying Cundiff was distracted ... not paying attention and not ready to immediately execute a kick.

As for how the team reacted to the botched attempt, we're told players were gracious.  As one player put it, "We didn't give him a hard time because he looked like he was ready to kill himself."

If that was the case why didn't they call a time out and allow him to compose himself so there would be no excuses. Seems to me that the team is making excuses for forgetting to call a time out and rushing the kick.

My fav team, 9ers lost yesterday, and I wanted the Ravens to beat baby Brady, so now I will root for the Giants. There is always next year for my 9ers.

Gang....TMZ got the story right. Cundiff had to run 70 yards before the kick. ESPN will come up with some tape showing this and will take all the credit. Nice work TMZ.

..
Receivers are paid to CATCH passes. Kickers are paid to MAKE PAT's and FIELD GOALS. When these pros don't do their jobs, they need to be FIRED.
..
Instead of an ALL-Harbaugh Super Bowl, it is a NO-Harbaugh game.
..
Harvey is probably bad with balls too - squinting gay jew dwarf lawyer!

What everyone should be asking is why was the kick was rushed. I'm sure, more than anything else, rushing the kick was the reason for the missed short field goal. Put the blame on the head coach. It's obviously they have no faith in this kicker when they had a chance to tie the game prior in the 4th quarter with the ball on the 33 yard line. Instead they went for it on 4th down. Didn't you all see Harbaugh grab the coach and change the call.

What a bunch of horse****. If you don't name names it doesn't mean a ****ing thing. This is the NFL. Our fans have higher standards than your normal lackies in LA LA land. If players have something to say they say it your face. They don't hide behind anonymous quotes like the chicken****s in Hollywood. Billy messed up big but he faced the press like a man. You all could learn a thing or two from him.

Andrew in Baltimore (yes, thats my real name up there. I don't hide behind anonymous screennames either)

It is easy blame him but it is the head coaches job to make sure his players are prepared. Meaning that either his special teams coach was providing the mental support or him. Too many isolate them put them on an island away from the team and say here you go and thus who knows whats going through his mind. Every kicker is different but he is money from that range. He had a lot what ifs going on. Could have been different. Harbaugh should have took that away with simplicity and "U have been before". Seen nothing from him or the special teams coach.
