Record Exec Damon Dash

Sued for Allegedly Selling

Music He Didn't Have Rights To

3/25/2012 9:40 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Rapper Curren$y's music is NOT to be trifled with -- and to prove it ... the MC is suing famed music producer Damon Dash, claiming he is hocking several Curren$y albums without permission.

Curren$y filed the lawsuit against Jay-Z's old biz partner and former co-owner of Roc-A-Fella Records -- claiming he and Dash tried to negotiate an agreement to release music together in 2010 ... but the deal never materialized.

Curren$y claims Dash released two of his albums in 2010 -- but the two still couldn't reach an agreement ... so Curren$y signed with Warner Bros. in January 2011.

But according to the lawsuit, Damon was unmoved -- and CONTINUED to release Curren$y's music despite the new WB contract, which gave WB exclusive rights to Curren$y's jams.

Now, Curren$y is demanding the producer quit profiting off him in any way. Curren$y also wants $1.5 million in damages.

But Damon fired back at the accusations with his own response -- claiming, he has the right to release the albums in question because he was given permission. What's more -- Damon says Curren$y stabbed him in the back, reneging on his agreement with Damon and signing with WB instead.

A judge has yet to rule on the case.

I am Spartacus

never heard of that rapper or his music. I wonder if someone on the TMZ staff actually cares about these people or this story or if they were sitting around and thought, "man this is a big story that i'm sure lots of people care about."

let me get this straight...curren$y knew there were issues with damon dash (ie releasing his records)...sooo rather than suing and getting a legal ruling himself... he signs with another company and doesn't WB practice due diligence before signing any new talent ??? something not right here !!!

Sincerity

Curren$y should have never allowed Damon Dash to release his music in the first place without the approval of his attorney. Verbal agreements are enforceable if a witness was present to verify that one existed. However, if I'm not mistaken, in New York state this agreement would have to be in writing in order for it to be enforceable. But, if Curren$y accepted and spent "ANY" money earned from the release of these two albums, the court may rule that an agreement with Damon Dash did exist and he is entitled to the rights and royalties from both of these albums. Greedy & Needy are two traits that "UNDERMINE" the financial future of many people in the entertainment business.

Funny how music used to be by people who actually MADE IT AND PLAYED it as opposed to those that trade and sell OTHER PEOPLES music. Rap is a ripp off and you are the victim.
