Andy Griffith
only passed away a few hours ago -- but TMZ has learned, the Hollywood icon has already been buried.

A rep for Twiford Funeral Homes in Manteo, North Carolina tells us, Andy was buried at 11:30 AM on his family farm on Roanoke Island. We're told Andy had previously requested to be buried immediately after his death ... so that's why it all happened so fast.

We made calls to find out if Andy was embalmed. No one was talking, but we're told it's legal in North Carolina to bury people without embalming them.

We're told Andy's burial followed a small, private service with close friends and family in attendance.

Andy was 86.

Probably to save the family and friends from the throng. Hard to be trickier than Matlock.

Well, that's a new one. Died earlier today and buried a few hours later.
Anyway, I would guess he died of natural causes but it's strange none of the sites reporting his death will say anything about the cause of death.
My condolences go out to his family.

You don't have to be embalmed in Minnesota, Oregon or Washington state. You don't have to be embalmed to cross over state lines (to be buried in another state).

I'm glad he had the peace of mind of knowing he would be ushered out the way he wanted, and that his people saw to it that his wishes were honored. Beyond that, what more can you ask on his behalf? Just say a prayer of thanks for him.

No fuss, no fanfare, no circus. It seems fitting that he'd wish it that way.

One other thing to reflect on with the loss of Andy Griffith was his profound effect on the careers of law enforcement officers born in the early 60's. Andy Griffith was the pivotal writer of his program "The Sheriff without a gun " became one of the main themes or lessons throughout the many episodes. Those entering Policing in the early 80's who grew up watching repeats on antenna TV ( and I do mean antenna not the cable channel) were better for those after school repeats with Andy Taylor. We must also note the truer to life family values expressed when compared to other shows of the period.
This was done While Andy portrayed a single parent matched only by the Rifleman series. Andy and his mostly lost supporting cast will be forever missed as they were part of a slowly fading breed.

An honest to God, wonderful, all around great person. I always enjoyed watching him on tv. I can't ever remember having read a single undesirable thing about Andy. I think the quick burial proves what a stand up guy he was, not wanting a media circus. May he Rest In Peace.
