The studio behind "The Dark Knight Rises" is removing all images and references to guns from all "Batman" movie trailers ... TMZ has learned.

Sources tell TMZ ... the honchos at Warner Bros. gave the order just a few hours after the shooting in Colorado this morning.

We're told the studio is hoping to replace the current made for TV trailers with the gun-free version as soon as possible.

We've called Warner Bros. for comment -- so far, no word back.

Pictures of guns don't kill people. People kill people.

This is dumb. Eventually, trailers for rated R movies will be left with only PG content. It makes no difference. Crazy people are crazy. Killers are killers.

While my heart goes out to everyone involved with that horrible tragedy, we can't nor should we retcon anything. Some people are just evil and it doesn't matter what we do - some people just aren't right. Taking the guns out of the trailer isn't going to stop people from doing terrible things. It's a waste of time. I cannot imagine what those poor people went through, and what their families are going through today, and will have to deal with the rest of their lives, due to the actions of a monster.

The movie didn't cause this - I suspect we'll find out he had serious mental health issues.

I know it's fun for fans to dress up for a movie but I think they should ban wearing costumes to movies. People thought this guy was part of the movie festivities even when he stood up dressed all in black. If everyone wears regular clothes to the movies, someone dressed up like this will set off alarms immediatley with people and no one will think he's supposed to be like a character from the film. Not that this would have prevented him from shooting people but as soon as he entered the property red flags would go up becuase of the costume

Stupid over reaction to a horrific situation. As if removing guns from trailers all of sudden makes crazy people sane again? How stupid, if you really cared how about just not making any movies with guns and violence in them? Doubt that will happen any time soon. ridiculous!

People are responsible for their own actions. If a movie trailer or comic book inspires someone to go on a killing spree they could have just as easily been inspired by a bowl of cereal.
