LeVar Burton OUTRAGED

Over Romney PBS Attack --

He's Destroying Our Kids!

EXCLUSIVE

Former "Reading Rainbow" host LeVar Burton is PISSED after Mitt Romney threatened to cut PBS funding last night -- telling TMZ, Romney would be stealing an invaluable educational resource from underprivileged children.

LeVar tells us, "I am personally outraged that any serious contender for the White House would target as part of his campaign the children of America in this fashion."

"Educators across the country, as well as millions of children and adults know that the programming on PBS has been responsible for significant improvements in education, literacy, math, science and life skills for generations of our children."

In case you missed the Presidential debate, Mitt promised to cut funding to PBS claiming it isn't an essential government expense -- but LeVar's firing back, claiming, "PBS represents .00016% of our nation's budget, yet this free resource benefits kids across all economic circumstances."

He adds, "Defunding PBS directly punishes the less fortunate by removing this trusted and extraordinary educational resource available to all."

"On behalf of America's children, I can't stay silent. I encourage you to join me in fighting this short-sighted and frankly mean-spirited attack on our children."

I would like to see the millions of dollars that are being borrowed from foreign company to fund PBS put towards improving our education system. "But I'm not going to keep on spending money on things to borrow money from China to pay for." Seriously? Borrowing money that we cannot pay back to keep a television station on the air? What if they call in their loan? WE CAN'T PAY IT!!! I say, let's not make this a puppet issue. Let's make it a take care of our country issue.

That's the most ridiculous comment I have ever heard in my life! PBS is not a necessity, and it is very important with the deficit sky rocketing like it is that we get spending under control. Obviously the "unprivilaged" find the money to pay their cable bill, or they wouldn't have t.v. at all. I am sure that even without that small percent the government provides for these shows, seseme street would find a way to stay on the air. Look at all the products that are currently on the market that are liscensed under their trademark, they are certainly not cheap and even a fraction of the profits from those alone would be quite adequate to keep the show on the air.

COAT/EXON bill grayed out the whole internet in the USA including public access cable and PBS but as forseen years before and as provided by fed laws it was stuck down.Any law the mormon moron would tryed to enact would stall crash burn and fail and be over turned,he has both feet in his mouth right from the get go.If he did gain office he would lam duck and about 98% of his bills would fail anyway as he is trying to trow away human rights and laws passed just to block him from doing so.He is a show duck the GOP doesn`t want the first office as then they would have on one to blame but them selfs and bush cheeny damaged the party so much the whole country was in the crapper.Credit cards faling at all time low less than 3% fisrt time since 2001,the mormon would put you under water again and trow away the keys to the 1% don`t have to pay taxes

Big Bird is richer than Romney. Read it and weep:

$450 million of taxpayer dollars is a bit steep to teach your children the alphabet.

How typical that people think Romney said he was going to get rid of PBS and "kill" Big Bird. He said no such thing. He said he wasn't going to borrow money from China to help fund those things. Seriously, does nobody pay attention to the annoying numbers of fundraisers that PBS does? That's because they raise money from private donations to keep running. The majority of their funding comes from PRIVATE donations and grants and BUSINESS partnerships, not government funding. Government money accounts for about 30-40% of its' funding last time I checked. They only subsidize PBS, they do no pay for it entirely.

Romney is saying that it is fiscally irresponsible to borrow money from another country (especially China!) to subsidize a television network. Frankly, he's right. Look, I love PBS. But they are a bloated a system that overspends the money its gets.

For those of us in Los Angeles, just look at what PBS did to the beloved KCET -- one of the charter PBS stations. PBS got greedy over money and Los Angeles lost a major PBS affiliate...and a PBS lost of revenue as a result I know I haven't donated a dime to them since that happened.

While I feel for Burton and his programs, I do not feel the government should be paying for PBS to be on the air. As for teaching reading to the poor, what an insult that poverty equals educational ignorance and the inability of parents to teach the ABC's, colors and shapes.

Levar I loved U in "Roots," but U are wrong about PBS & Big Bird. Big Bird being dropped from TV. Those programs will be retained on TV, but most likely on a TV Station like "Nick at Nite." My Child grew up watching Big Bird, & I love PBS, it will remain, but just not at the Taxpayers Expense...

Talk about over-reacting! George W Bush refused to allow federal funding to be used for stem cell research, yet stem cell research is still being conducted. If PBS funding is cut, then they will just have to find more corporate sponsors or more public donations.

I'm not voting for either Romney or Obama, but he's got a point here.. private and corporate donations would be enough.
