Actor Larry Hagman -- best known as the conniving J.R. Ewing on "Dallas" -- has died at age 81.

Hagman died in a Dallas hospital at 4:20 pm Friday, due to complications from a recent battle with cancer ... according to local reports.

The actor's family released a statement shortly afterwards, saying "He was surrounded by loved ones when he passed. It was a peaceful passing, just as he had wished for."

Hagman also starred in "I Dream of Jeannie" but was most famous for playing the iconic villain J.R. in the 1980's drama "Dallas" -- and recently reprised the same role on the TNT version ... which launched earlier this year (below).

He is survived by his two children.

Coroner's report shows that he was smothered in his sleep by his own eyebrows.

RIP Larry! I loved watching the reruns of I dream of Jeannie, and also watching Dallas. He proved that he was one hell of an actor.

So sad to hear of Larry Hagman passing on. I loved his character in Dallas and from what others are saying, he seemed to be a genuinely nice guy in real life. RIP Larry and condolences to your family.

#Larry Hagman ...and I say, How the hell did it ever stay on the air past it's pilot. Embarrassing to watch, but for his & Linda Grey's screen time. Even the always wimpy & awful Patrick Duffy [imagine that he was one day hot to some, & rode his Dallas face value into a not short lived enough sitcom, with even less chops for comedy than he had for acting in general except to wear a constipated expression on his face to signal emotion], were an embarrassment to watch with all those hopelessly talent bereft TV "Models", as one finds on daytime soaps.
That treacly, duller than paste wife of Bobby's, who's acting & looks should get her no better "acting" job than a children's cough medicine commercial. The complete lack of charisma in every single character, cheesy & gut laughingly bad sets, lighting & cinematography & casting of nothing but completely unfamiliar no name supporting players, not to mention of all characters the casting of what could only be a reject from the ever dwindling [thank God] lineup of daytime soaps, as JR. who could only have gotten that job by probably being related to an exec-producer or network head but beyond not worthy of playing Hagman's evil spawn, all a perfect examples of how the abundance of empty cable channels which will be filled with just about anything for the sake of the necessary ad revenue, compared to the old "Big 3" Networks ruled days. Cable TV originals can only go one of two ways; Be way off the beaten path, wild & censorship bucking like Weeds, Cali***********, the brilliant Breaking Bad or even Arrested Development & Mad Men or dull, obviously LOW LOW budget crappy retreads of the big three's ruling days...like the new Dallas & it's ilk. Even at that the reunions always sucked as did those of the 2nd runner up in night time soaps Dynasty. The only reason the third runner up never had such reunions, Falcon Crest was that the star who was the necessary central character was strictly old school taste & judgement & always said a fast & firm "NO" to any such proposals.
Hagman you're a TV legend who'll be missed & a hero for being the reason one more second rate, plotless TV filler will be summarily stamped "CANCELLED" (Guess Victoria Principle was the only one who had the good sense to smell a stinker & or just simply wasn't as desperate for the money or limelight. After all...they brought back chubby little Lucy. What was the second clue that this show was strictly for the birds...
We'll miss you Larry, God bless you & say hi to your lovely mother, Mary "Peter Pan", Nellie Forbush" Martin....and be glad you got the hell out of Dodge - or Dallas as it were.

RIP Larry & thank you for your work & for what will now be the imminent cancellation of the new Dallas. One more free cable slot. Tried 4 times & never got farther than 1 full episode & then 10 to 15 mins. of a few more it was so embarrassing to watch save for Larry Hagman & Linda Grey's screen time.
