Ben Affleck

Heads to Capitol Hill --

The Congo Needs Our Help!

12/19/2012 8:30 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF

121912_affleck_congo_launch
Ben Affleck -- famous actor, director and screenwriter -- is now adding congressional testifier to his resume ... 'cause the "Argo" star just hit Capitol Hill to ask for U.S. intervention in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Affleck addressed the House Armed Services Committee on the security situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo this morning, claiming militant rebel groups have destabilized the country for long enough ... and it's time the U.S. put an end to the violence once and for all.

Why is Affleck qualified to talk about the Congo problems? Well, he happens to be the founder of the Eastern Congo Initiative, a humanitarian group that provides funding for local leaders and organizations in the eastern Congo.

Fancy that.

Not sure if happy more people are being made aware of problems in the Congo or sad that TMZ is only showing it because a celebrity is involved.

Okay although the point that we need to take care of home before we take care of other countries is perfectly valid, the issues we face in our country are practically a vacation compaired to the people of Congo. Remember that big video on youtube about KONY2012 and all that? That is where that group does that junk. Ever see "Hotel Rwanda"? Yea well that happens there too. These people are not just hungry, they are being slaughtered.

Now we may not really be able to invest money into helping them at the moment, but we can atleast show the world that it does have the US and other countries attention. At the very least it will make the leaders of these groups aware that most likely sooner or later they will pay for their crimes against humanity. Now I am far from an expert on the subject. All I know is people are being raped, tortured and murdered there. And it is the most dangerous place in the world to be a woman.

Would we be talking about Congo today if Mr. Affleck wasn't there. Doubt it. He has a lot of fans and the more attention brought to this, the better. He seems like a kind person to me, whether you like his work or not. I am sure that he donates time and money here at home aswell.

Props to Ben for fighting the Good Fight!

Perhaps a bit more preparation next time... less reading and more from the heart would have a bigger impact.

Who do these self absorbed Hollywood f*ckheads think they are anyway? They seem to think they are better than everyone else. They need to just go away. Send them to the corn field.

I imagine Ben and Jen are pretty well off. Doubtful they'll ever be able to spend all their dough. So, if you are so concerned about the Congo, YOU support them. You won't miss a few million lying around in your bank accounts.

At least he is doing something productive unlike some celebrities who are spending their wealth buying $12 mil homes and $3000 handbags.

Face it. No one gives 2 $hit's about the Congo. If they do, they are most likely lying. Most of Africa is a 3rd world hellhole and not amount of aid or $ sent over there is going to fix it.

Such a dumb a.ss. The main problem of the Congo is a totally corrupted government which destabilizes the country. This government get's it's money from the export of oil, by far the most important resource of the Congo. the MAIN importer of the Congo oil is who? YES, THAT's right, THE US! So who pays the Congo government than?
Maybe stupid Affleck can figure out himself why the US will never intervene in the Congo, EXCEPT for oil...
