Mary J. Blige's

FINANCIAL DISASTER

New $900k Tax Lien

2/17/2013 5:30 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF
EXCLUSIVE

Just when you thought Mary J. Blige's financial problems couldn't get any worse ... TMZ has learned the singer has been hit with a $900,000 tax lien in the State of New Jersey.

Blige -- who was JUST sued earlier this month for allegedly defaulting on a $500k bank loan -- is now on the hook for $901,769.65 in back taxes to the Garden State, this according to official documents obtained by TMZ.

The tax lien is the latest in a string of financial woes for the Grammy winner -- just last year, Mary J. was sued for allegedly defaulting on a $2.2 million bank loan ..  and before that, her charity was sued for not paying back a $250k loan.

Back in May, Blige blamed the charity's financial issues on the staff -- saying, "The problem is that I didn't have the right people in the right places doing the right things."

We reached out to Blige's camp for comment on the tax lien -- but so far, radio silence.

I am one of her biggest fans and I really must say Mary needs to get away from that husband of hers... Since she married him and made him the manager **** has been goin down the TUBES! Just my observation... Lackluster Records.. Bull**** Concert Tours and Awful Promo. This woman needs to regain control of her career ASAP! I believe in you MJB!

It's always so easy to dog someone if you haven't lived their lifestyle. Many other singers will follow because people are getting their cd's online for free and the only way they can make money is to tour and that costs money up front. why do you think madonna keeps touring? because she is one of the few who can actually make money AND afford to put the show on to reap some profit from it. people think if a celeb gets 20 million a movie that they pocket 20 mil but that's not the case once you pay your agent and taxes. it's a major hustle to be able to maintain being a celebrity. you can make millions on paper but be left with much, much less after everyone you employ is paid. and lets not forget "security". once you make it that big, you will most likely have to pay for some kind of protection for the duration of your run as a celebrity and afterwards. let's not forget the "downtime" when a cd didn't make it big after spending so much to make it and promote it. you lost money so where will it come from to make the next cd? not making excuses for her or those like her because there are others who maintain being a celebrity quite well. she needs to learn how to prioritize her finances and cut out all that is unnecessary. If I were a celebrity I'd never have a big house because when you came home, how do you know someone didn't break in and is hiding in one of your many bedrooms, LOL.

It seems like Mary J. Blige was advised to create a "charitable", "non-profit" organization to serve as a "tax shelter" but forgot to settle her outstanding tax bills before she launched it. No wonder it all blew up in her face. You don't borrow money to fund an enterprise that's suppose to be supported with proceeds from grants, donations and successful fund raising events. You're suppose to ask people to become board members who can "successfully" assist you with fund raising activities. With the right people on her board, she could have applied for grants to gradually sustain her charity until it was able to support itself from other fund raising activities. She expected "TOO MUCH, TOO SOON"!!! She lacked the necessary "SEED MONEY" to launch it. Many people launch charities out of their homes, churches or community centers until they accumulate the funds to purchase or rent their own offices. You "LIVE" and you "LEARN"!!!

oh paleez

this tax thing is probably due to mismanagement of her funds by whoever she entrusted to handle her books. this is why you should learn how to be able to review your own books, then you know what's going on and who needs to be fired for screwing up, embezzlement, etc.
