Gene Wilder

TRASHES 'Wonka' Movie Remake

'I Think It's an Insult'

Don't expect Gene Wilder and Tim Burton to share a candy bar together any time soon ... because Wilder says he flat out HATES the director's remake of his classic film, "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory."

Wilder made a rare appearance Thursday night in NYC and spoke with Turner Classic Movies host Robert Osborne. According to The Wrap, Wilder called the 2005 movie "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" starring Johnny Depp "an insult" to the original.

Wilder said he had no beef with Depp (calling him "a good actor") but said of Burton, "I don't care for that director. He's a talented man, but I don't care for him doing stuff like he did."

Oompa Loompa doo-pa-dee do ...
It's gotta suck when Willy Wonka rips you ...

You whore I do not understand what you have to look Depp As Wonk first obejzycie read a book and then a video of Gene scenes there is a lot of pipes which have not fit in the action adventure, and doing the movie who teaches him just to make the like not astonished that you are a loser...

Charlie and the Chocolate factory is not a remake. It is an adaptation of the original book by Roald Dahl, and stays more true to the book than 'Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory'. Just saying.

I agree with Gene. Johnny Depp is a great actor and I am a fan of Tim Burtons work, I just flat out don't like the remake.

He's got a point. Burton was the WRONG director for the remake, and that is coming from a Burton fan. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was a crushing disappointment. I love Johnnie Depp, but even he couldn't save that movie. It had not just lost, but pissed on and then lost all the magic and imagination that Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory had.

Those who keep saying that the "remake" was terrible are completely off the mark. It was NOT a remake. Tim Burton decided to make a movie that was actually directly from the book and not "kiddie-fy" it like the first movie did. It's no different than the handful of Gatsby movies out there. None of them are remakes. They are each director's take on the same book...with one being incredibly more faithful to it than others. Don't like that? That's fine. But learn the facts and the difference.

I love the original. I love Tim Burton's version. I love the original for its childlike approach. I love Tim Burton's for his more faithful approach as Roald Dahl's story was very dark...as were most of his stories. And as much as I love Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka, it is clear he never read the original story to realize how faithful Burton's version was, otherwise he wouldn't criticize what Burton did to it. A true fan of the book would realize it was Wilder's version that changed the mood, feel, and look of the story. The fact he keeps discussing it years later is now just coming across as bitter...as though he truly believes no one should dare play Wonka except for him. And that just makes me lose respect for him.

You guys are way to critical and aren't enjoying the movie for what it is...the second one wasn't a REMAKE of the first one, it was an entirely different take on the original book by Dahl, being truer to the story. Instead of dissecting what you think the director and actors intentions were when they made the film, just relax and stop comparing. Enjoy the movie for goodness' sake. By the way, Gene can calm his feathers. Depp did an amazing job portraying Willy Wonka in HIS own way. The interpretation was based on the ORIGINAL story.

Roald Dahl is a legend. The first movie was great. The remake was shamefully bad.
