Clay Aiken

I Can Get Dirty Too

On the Campaign Trail

2/6/2014 12:02 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF

Clay Aiken ain't smiling and singing anymore ... instead the former 'Idol' runner-up is coming out swinging in a run for Congress.

Clay Aiken ... tough guy? Politics defnitely change people.

Why North Carolina should elect Clay Aiken.

If you've ever heard Clay wax poetic on politics/issues?

You hear someone who cares about EVERYONE.

He studies issues 24/7.

Makes decisions based on THE OVERALL GOOD.

Number of people served, etc.

Clay's never been one to capitalize on his good name.

Always strives and seeks growth, improvement, the-helping-of-people-isms.

Blows my mind but doesn't surprise me Clay's going for this -

Good for Clay - he'll win -

...This time around?

... the votes will be counted fairly.

Other Hollywood types have run and won seats, but this guy has none of the charisma nor the track records of those other people...Uh-uh Clay, not gonna happen.

I bet it won't be long before the right wing starts spreading rumors that he's gay.

I cannot believe that TMZ hasn't taken the time to find out what Clay Aiken is really about. His philanthropy with his foundation and with UNICEF is widely known. He has toured 10 or 12 times since Idol. He has had a network special and a PBS special, been on numerous TV programs, written a book, you name it. This guy legitimately cares about helping disabled kids integrate with able bodied kids. With UNICEF he went to many countries which would be considered dangerous. His entertainment career is far from over but he wants to help his state in Washington. He can make far more money entertaining but he is an exceptional man who wants to use his voice to help people.

I am totally disgusted by the video above and even moreso by the homophobic comments in the comments section. The people in his section of NC would be very lucky to have a man such as Clay. He is well spoken, very articulate and I'm hoping that the people of NC are not as nasty as most of the commenters here. Go Clay! Give 'em hell!!!!

You guys commenting seem to be so right that there isn't much interest in this story. TMZ hasn't even followed up with the post-primary news. This week, Aiken will officially be declared winner of the Democratic primary. He won by a tight 369 votes.
In a weird twist, his closest competitor, a lifelong locally active businessman, DIED yesterday. Keith Crisco was 71 and died after a fatal fall at his home yesterday; he was preparing to concede. All concerned offered sympathy, from Aiken to the in***bent.
Yes, Aiken has an uphill battle to take this seat. One, Congresswoman Ellmers remains popular in her district, but appears bright enough to take Aiken's challenge seriously (never underestimate in politics!) Two, off year elections favor the opposition party (to which party has the White House).
