Nick Responds in Divorce Case

TMZ has obtained Nick Lachey's response to the divorce petition of estranged wife Jessica Simpson, and the groundwork is now laid for a fight over money.


In his response, Lachey claims the date of separation was December 13, 2005. In Simpson's papers, she claims the date of separation was November 23, 2005.

Since the couple did not have a prenup (as TMZ first reported), income earned before the split is community property -- divided 50/50.

TMZ has learned that on December 5, 2005, Simpson received $850,000 for performing at a private concert in Cincinnati. If Lachey's separation date is accurate, he'd be entitled to half her fee. If Simpson's date is accurate, she'd keep the entire amount, as well as any other income she earned after November 23.

As for which date is correct, TMZ has learned Jessica moved out of the couple's house on December 13, 2005. In addition, Jessica and Nick were constantly e-mailing each through the 13th. Ultimately, it's for a judge to decide.

According to the documents, Lachey has reserved his right to ask for spousal support. He has not, however, asked the court to preclude Jessica from receiving support from him.

2. seriously i think that jessica and nick should resolve their issues and get back together i think that they make a better couple then him a vanessa , jessica simpson if you ever read this i think your strong and very smart i know that i must still hurt you and the same for nick. I've been there done that and had family interfere with my relationship and have been seperated from my husband before and thought that i would never take him back, but i did and i think that through our seperation i grew and so did he to realize that life does go on and sometimes we have to let go of the mishaps and conflicts between us and work through it. I say this to both Nick and Jessica, there will never be another nick and there will never be another jessica in both of your eyes, but if your heart still skips a beat when you see each other and you get this warm feeling when you come across each other, life is to short GIVE IT ANOTHER TRY! It wont hurt to try. I think that you all were a great couple and would have beautiful kids together. So for the whole world try to give it another try. Remember, everything happens for a reason. 3. They really need to get back together.The world was better when they were toegther and it seems they may have caused alot of celebrity divorces....

4. I think they were a perfect couple. Both are hot, and I think their differences just made the relationship even better. He was her other half/ she was his other half. Although I think Vannessa is a beautiful girl, I still think Jess and NIck were made for one another. I just don't think that John Mayer is cute enought for Jess...
