"Project Runway" Winner Goes Fur-Free

Jay McCarrollThe Humane Society has become the exclusive sponsor of "Project Runway" first season winner Jay McCarroll's debut fashion line.

McCarroll, who won Bravo's design competition back in 2005, will premiere his fur-free collection in September at NY's Fashion Week.

While Beyonce and Jennifer Lopez may beg to differ, Jay says "With so many fun and fashionable alternatives, there's no reason to use fur."

Other designers and retailers forgoing the use of animal fur in their collections include Ralph Lauren, Stella McCartney, H+M and J.Crew.

2. I am so proud of Jay McCarroll, following in the footsteps of other famous designers. There is really no debating the use of fur in this day and age. The proof is right there. If someone wants to see for themselves, go to Youtube.com, pull up keywords "dog" "fur" "china" and watch as hundreds of dogs and cats are brutally tortured each day. The sadness and fright in their eyes as they are being transported throught the streets of China is unforgettable. It makes me cry and hug each of my 6 dogs!

3. Kudos to this up and coming Designer. Glad to know you have learned something from either your parents or from caring about the animals and Earth over the years!
Good Luck, you will be doing a fine job with your no fur designs! To wear fur shows nothing more then ignorance and a lack of compassion. Thanks for making a positive difference on this Earth Jay!

4. FUR RULES! Nothing feels better than running your fingers through the pelt of a dead animal. I love fur trim and fur details.

5. Does his boycott of designing with fur also include a boycott of leather? Just curious...

6. I don't care about the fur thing so much....it's that picture that you guys decided to use on him that freaks me out. *cringes*

God, he's scary.

7. That's so cool.

I wonder if any of you who have, and will, comment about how great fur is, would have the guts to actually skin a raccoon dog alive?

Like is documented here: http://www.furtrim.org

No, "That's not how I would do it," because what is shown is how it goes down.

If right now, you had to skin a dog alive, for a collar, could you do it?

8. ANOTHER GUTLESS WIMP WHO IS BULLIED AND THREATENED BY ANIMAL RIGHTS EXTREMISTS. THIS IS AMERICA WHERE FREEDOM OF CHOICE IS SUPREME.... THAT IS UNLESS YOU GO AGAINST THE FANATICAL ANIMAL RIGHT 'S FACTIONS. WHEN THEY TELL HIM NOT TO USE LEATHER, SUEDE, SILK, WOOL.......WHAT WILL HE TELL THEM NEXT.... I'LL USE PLASTICS!!!!!!

9. Fur looks best on the animal God gave it to. There is no reason in this day and age to need to wear fur for warmth--there are synthetic fabrics that are much better. If people are so hell bent on wearing fur--the fake furs now actually look (and smell) better than the real thing. Good for Jay--I hope more follow his example.

10. I applaud any designer that abstains from the use of fur in their clothing. What's wrong with fake fur if someone wants to own it? Nothing except price...and that is why some dodos want the real thing..to show off. Those who use fur and/or wear ir have no care for Mother Earth and her inhabitants. God gave us animals for pets, and food only. NOT to torture and wear for the sake of being snobbish!

11. I agree with whoever made the raccoon comment. If people love fur and are really that desperate for it, go buy a shotgun and do it yourself.

12. It's so great to see another enlightened designer who realizes that you don't have to kill an animal for fashion! There's no excuse for fur and fur trim. Not even the argument "what about freedom of choice" holds when animals are being raised on fur farms in filthy, tiny cages exposed to all weather extremes before being gassed, strangeled, or genitally electrocuted. If you "chose" to treat your dog or cat the way animals on fur farms are treated you would be arrested. Actions that harm others are not matters of personal choice. Way to go, Jay!

13. Go Jay! I can't wait to see his collection. Bravo for not using fur, and let's see if there are any designers on PR 3 as good as Jay.

14. Ah..hmmm...how can you use any 'adult' and not have 'fur'?

Posted at 6:41PM on Jul 20th 2006 by doug

15. I applaud Jay! not an extremist and I eat meat and wear leather, but cattle are treated much better and killed humanly. I believe that there is not enough regulation in fur and no other part of the animal is used. What a waste - I love my two cats too much to imagine them grown in cages and then suffer a horrible death. It is unnecessary!!
