EXCLUSIVE: Gibson Skated Twice Before

7/31/2006 2:06 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

TMZ has learned that Mel Gibson has been stopped for reckless driving two other times in Malibu but he was allowed to leave without a ticket or arrest.

As TMZ first reported, Gibson was arrested on Friday for suspicion of driving under the influence on Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu -- driving 87 miles an hour. As we reported, the deputy who arrested Gibson was ordered to sanitize his arrest report to make it appear that Gibson's arrest was "without incident." In fact, The report states Gibson was abusive, violent and vulgar, and even attempted to escape.

TMZ has confirmed that approximately three years ago, Gibson was driving 74 miles per hour on Pacific Coast Highway, one mile from his house, when he was pulled over by a Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputy. Sources say Gibson avoided eye contact with the deputy during the stop and even though the deputy was suspicious of Gibson's sobriety, he let him go.

Approximately one year ago Gibson was stopped again, after driving 64 miles an hour on Pacific Coast Highway -- where the speed limit is 45. Sources say that Gibson was so cocky that he was on his cell phone the entire time he was detained by the deputy. Ultimately, the deputy decided to let him go without giving him a citation.

And there's new information about Friday's arrest.

As TMZ reported, the deputy who arrested Gibson was ordered by superiors to re-write his report and eliminate all references to Gibson's bad conduct and anti-Semitic remarks. Sources tell TMZ that Lt. Crystal Miranda told the arresting deputy that Captain Tom Martin talked to Sheriff Lee Baca who expressed concern that the explosive report might leak to the media and that it needed to be re-written in a sanitized form.

Sources say Gibson, who was pulled over early Friday morning for allegedly crossing lanes at a high speed, told the arresting deputy that he was leaving home just after 2 a.m. and heading to his brother's house. The arresting deputy found a bottle of tequila in the car, 3/4 full, in a brown paper bag. We're told that Gibson told the deputy that the bottle wasn't his but, "I've had a little bit."

We're also told that Gibson, who issued a statement over the weekend, suggesting he was not of sound mind when he uttered the anti-Semitic tirade and engaged in abusive behavior, was not in fact "out of it." Sources connected with the case tell TMZ that Gibson was drunk but was in control of his senses. At one point at the Sheriff's station, sources say Gibson was "jumping like a monkey" on a steel cage and told the arresting deputy, "I'm not going to hurt you physically. I'm gonna hurt you. I'm gonna make you lose."

We're also told that deputies at the Sheriff's station were star struck by Gibson and a number of them went to Gibson's holding cell to get a look of the star. The problem for the Sheriff's department -- there's a mounted camera in the station and the deputies can be seen fawning over the actor. Sheriff's officials have called some of the officers who were caught on tape in and warned them they might be subject to discipline.

As TMZ reported, the arresting deputy was ordered by officials to take out references to Gibson's bad behavior. We're told the altered report makes no mention of the fact that Gibson attempted to flee the scene by running to his car to escape. We're also told that the officer checked a box on the report that Gibson was "belligerent." Ironically, even though officials did not order the deputy to remove that reference, they did order him to re-write the report to eliminate all references to the supporting evidence leading the officer to believe Gibson was indeed "belligerent."

I had never heard of TMZ before the Gibson debacle. This site and it's purpose is far more of a detriment to us all than anything Mel Gibson could ever say. And you should have no problem finding human weakness or finding people interested in knowing about it, including me apparently. This is some sick s***! By the way... there is a certain amount of truth in his rant. Maybe that should be talked about.

It would be important to know exactly what Mr.... Gibson said, for me to decide if he is a Jew hater.
I personally doubt he hates "Jews".
He maybe biased and thats ok and not against the law!!!!
But being accused of hatred for a whole group of people is a strong accusation and a bad label to stick on some one...... with out knowing what really is in their heart.

Seems to me the media is way to giddy about this little tid bit of non news.

We as a nation have much more important news to worry about.

There are evil people running our country or havent you noticed?
Maybe the media just likes to distract you from that fact with bullshit like this.

Mel Gibson is a horrible bigot...anyone else remember his words regarding gays?
"I would never be gay...I could never take it up the butt"...this was in a Spanish magazine...And The Passion of Christ was horribly anti-semetic!! The nuns at my Catholic grammar & Catholic high schools never taught that anyone of the Jewish faith was responsible for Jesus' death. And by the way, Mel Gibson wants the church to go back to pre-Vatican II Catholicism!! Latin masses and everything!!

This only proves that this "Blue Code of Silence" comes with many types of faces.
I know for a fact that this behavior (DUI/ Drunk & Disorderly) has been accepted by those who wear the same badge. They take care of their own, only to call wives or up to offering rides home for the same conduct exhibited by Mr. Gibson.
These officer's (loosely termed), believe that they are above the same law that they are "required" to enforce. This is a serious abuse of justice that needs to be addressed with an iron fist.

It is both pathetic and amusing to observe how quickly star-struck loons, of the social conservative feather, flock together in Gibson’s defense. This phenomena is only outmatched in its hypocrisy when one witnesses how political right-wingers trip all over themselves as they “rush” to Limbaugh’s drug addicted side when their demented demagogue was besmirched by his own bad behavior -- you know, this was the guy who said that all first time drug offenders should be thrown in prison. Yet, predictably, this very same oh-so-forgiving crowd slathers all over itself with glee at the missteps of any and all so-called “liberal” public figures.

And honestly, it is getting much too cliché to read how conservative professional media-bashers consistently express a desire to kill the messengers for delivering what seems, to them, unpleasant messages. But, somehow I do not believe that TMZ would be cutting anyone, regardless of their political affiliations or personal views, any slack when it comes to just reporting a news story which is backed-up by verifiable facts. If this story was about Alec Baldwin, I personally think it would be a bigger headline grabber because it seems more out of character for a liberal to spew imbecilic bigoted remarks against a minority than what is typically true of social conservatives. Although, to be fair, infrequent as it may be, a few aberrations have occurred.

For example, in January 1984 there was Jesse Jackson’s insipid remarks about Jewish people when he referred to Jews as “Hymies” and to New York as “Hymie town” during a conversation with black Washington Post reporter, Milton Coleman. Because of that one slip of the tongue, Jesse will never again be looked upon with the same degree of respect
and admiration as a legitimate public voice calling for civil rights and for tolerance in regard to minority matters. And now, Gibson’s own stupid anti-Semitic diatribe will forever haunt Mel to the depths of his emotionally disturbed little Braveheart, too. Not to mention the awkward moments to be anticipated at some of Hollywood‘s A-list cocktail parties amongst the large number of actors and producers attending who may be of the Semitic persuasion.

Gibson also made some really vile homophobic publiccomments in the past, but the general public pretty much ignored those remarks -- no doubt tacitly agreeing with his prejudices. And the media hardly even winced. But the press should have known better because bigots usually don’t stop their bashing at one minority. One thing is very clear though, Jackson and Mel both seemed to have forgotten that one’s reputation is probably the single most valuable possession you have. Each of us would be well advised to guard ours carefully because once you lose it, you can’t get it back. But then bigotry is never carefully reasoned out, it is bestial at its core. It is pure passion without reason; fueled by low self-esteem; political exploitation or religious tribalism projected into an expression of group-hate. Gibson seems to fit into all three of those categories.

Now I, like many people, especially when I was in college, imbibed a bit of the ale from time to time. But one thing that I found to be especially true was that people really are themselves when they are under the influence. For better or worst, that is the part of us that we generally keep under control when we are sober. But with a little too much in the way of spirits stirred into a social situation, people most often speak candidly about what really is on their mind without the protective and inhibiting wall of social propriety filtering out and editing their remarks. Even modern psychiatry uses drugs, under carefully controlled conditions, to chemically relax inhibitions so as to make a patient’s mind more accessible for therapy. This is commonly done to in order to discover the root of deep-seated emotional problems or mind-sets. In Gibson’s case, perhaps we got to see a little too much of the Wizard behind the curtain

The bottom line is this though, drunk or sober we are responsible for our behavior. So, unless Mel or Jesse can claim they had a sudden attack of Tourette’s Syndrome , then we can all safely assume that they, drunk or sober, meant what they said. Now, do I think that everyone who says something insensitive or mean-spirited should forever be relegated to the untouchable caste of a social pariah due to an imprudent and hurtful remark? No. But I do think that some therapy or soul-searching might be in order. That and lots of apologies if you want to come back to the world village and be part of the neighborhood again.

Perhaps, I am just a unwavering optimist, but I truly believe people can change. I am not a religious person, because I like to think for myself, but I have faith in human nature. I believe all truths are there waiti

Someone said that drunks say what they really mean when they are intoxicated well if that is so my father hated me and thought very terrible things about me and my brother for when he was drunk that is when he would say very mean things including the fact that he hated me. So I have to believe that they do not always mean what they say when they are intoxicated and may say things to just grab your attention.

Of course I will see continue to see Mel Gibson's movies. If this story is true, then we the people of the U.S. should be much more forgiving. Hitler was responsible for murdering 6 million Jews. Do these actions of Mr. Gibson come close to comparison? Of course not. An apology should be seen as a strength and not a weakness. Is any person innocent of saying something they regret - even when he or she wasn't drunk? Who wants to throw the first stone? We shouldn't write anyone off, including a celebrity, for saying something they didn't mean. Mr. Gibson has already apologized and I am quite sure he has already paid dearly for what he said. Who knows? Maybe his wife cheated on him with a Jewish guy. LET IT GO.

"The Simpson’s" has been running very popularly for what? 17 years now? They are continually making anti-Semitic comments. If that is not enough...there is always “South Park”. These shows are celebrated and considered funny because of their anti-Semitism! Is it because Gibson’s skin doesn’t have a yellow tinge to it that everyone is being so hard on him?? Well, none of you has a yellow tinge to your skin either. If you were to sit down and seriously think about your own life, what would you come up with?? How often has one of you called your a waitress a b***h or that other horrible word for cutting you off in the bar? Well that is what I see happened here. The person getting in your way by doing their job could be the nicest person ever, but you will try to hit them where it hurts, because they are getting in your way!! I am not excusing what Gibson did, it was hurtful and wrong to many, many people, but he has apologized for what he has done. How much longer will this incident be analyzed on the news? Will he be as quick to judge when any of you call that next cab driver that doesn’t stop for you a p**i?? You know you all do it! Why can’t he? Celebrities live in the public eye so much that when (not if, when) they screw up terribly, I should hope the good people of our world would excuse it after not one but two PUBLIC apologies! GIVE IT A FRIGGING REST!

I am very disappointed to read & hear all the media's remarks about Mel's DUI...Isn't there better news to report?..The guy was DUI...He was obviously lucky not to have killed anyone or himself...everyone should just let him be...He will have his day in court just like everyone else does when they are DUI...He has so much money, the fines are just chump change for him...This is becoming old news & boring news...As for the false reports being made, come on...Police Depts are notorious for filing false reports...They also tell lies about other arrested individuals and it doesn't make the morning or evening news and no one questions them about everyone should go back to their daily boring lives and leave Mel Gibson alone...

Mel Gibson has 'sown to the wind' and will now reap the whirlwind. Just shows how sinful we all are eventhough we look so good.

I will still see Mel Gibson's movies. He IS lucky he didn't kill anyone or himself when he was driving drunk and speeding. It's up to a court and a jury to decide if he gets jail time, but it's NOT up to everyone else to smear his reputation. He shouldn't be treated differently than any non-celebrity, therefore he shouldn't be getting this kind of press for his actions. Joe Shmoe wouldn't be getting this kind of press, right?

Too much noise over someone's mistake. If you do not handle alcohol well, you can say and do stupid things and regular behavior can change into something absolutely absurd or aggressive. Mr. Gibson should go and seek for help and people should simply know better than to pay attention to someone who is clearly drunk.
