Hasselbeck Gets Hot -- and a Hug From Babwa

Token "View" conservative Elisabeth Hasselbeck doesn't hide her emotions when it comes to the controversy surrounding the morning-after pill.

A heated discussion about the subject erupted on Wednesday's show when Barbara Walters brought up that the controversial morning-after pill was being considered for approval for over-the-counter distribution by the FDA. Hasselbeck became visibly upset while arguing the topic and was scolded by Walters for being overly emotional. The agitated Elisabeth proceeded to tear up her cards as the show went to a commercial break.

When the show returned from the break, Elisabeth was being soothed by a motherly Walters as they sat in each other's laps. Barbara told Elisabeth that she respected her opinions and Elisabeth responded that she respected Barbara' s opinion as well--and that she loved being on the show. They then hugged and kissed.

While the display was slightly disturbing--to say the least--we're just happy this sort of mothering wasn't around when Star was on the show.

31. I don't agree with Elizabeth's opinion on this (or many other things) - it sounds too much like the Republican party line - but I have no problem with her expressing them. However, my opinion is that it is not the right of anyone to tell me that I must have a baby if that is not what I want. If Elizabeth doesn't want to use the morning after pill, fine. Don't use it!

With all the children and babies in this country in foster care, abandoned, abused, hungry or in other crisis, why aren't Pro-Lifer's worried about those children vs the potential life in MY body?

I am glad Barbara told Elizabeth to calm down, because Elizabeth was nearing Defcom 4 and we wouldd have had to head for the bomb shelters.

32. Babs made the right call on this on...regardless of her opinion Lizbeth has to figure out a way to get her point across without looking like an irrational idiot. I personally don't care what women are doing with their bodies.

33. She doesnt give a damn about the people that are already here, kids floating down the street in New Orleans and lil kids being blown to pieces and slaughtered for no apparent or logical reason whatsoever, just the cells that havent even formed yet. She is an abomination and should be an embarassment to all women. What do they want next, control over my scrotum??? She wants republicans (only) to have jurisdiction over everyones falopian tubes as if they dont have more pressing issues on the table. If she'd mind her business and stay out of everyones bedroom, shed probably be able to stop having on-air spazms and form a coherent point of "view". And to think, I had a full head of hair this mornin, thanks Lizzie! Is it too late to bring back Star???

34. I agree with SiliconSally - Elisabeth IS and idiot! I used to watch this show often, and now I almost never turn it on. Elisabeth is the primary reason I do not watch anymore.

35. There was absolutely no need for Babs to get so upset. Elisabeth was making her point of veiw known, then all of the sudden, Barbara started freaking out!! I've never seen her stop Joy when she gets out of control, which happens almost on a daily basis!!

36. Wonderful America. Land of the free. Sure, freedom of speach - but only when it's politically correct and you and the media agree with it. Barbara is looking smaller and smaller lately. If anyone has lost control, it's her! But I'll still watch her (and Mel too).

37. Am I seeing incorrectly that Joy does something with a peice of paper and folds it over. Next you see Elizabeth ripping it up. I wonder what it said.
"shut up, your next"

38. The View is not a good forum for Elisabeth. She is unable to rationally or intelligently discuss many issues with the other ladies or guest hosts. She doesn't listen to anyone, just rants her opinion, always has to be right, and get the last word in. If she had half a brain, she'd be dangerous. Elisabeth should go back to finding less-expensive fashion to wear. Current events is not her forte, and as other posters have said, she cannot back up a lot of the statements she makes.

39. Elisabeth Hasselback is a conservative republican crazy BITCH! she should be kicked off the show! Her views are not only stupid but unnecessary and cruel. She has no right to say what she did about women getting raped. I am a rape survivor and if I had gotten pregnant I would not dare bring a child into this world and have to explain to them that their father is a rapist or worst yet in a case of incest that their father is also my father or uncle. She just proves that in today's society people are not open minded. She is a Bush supporter who deserves to be fired!

41. She has an opinion and voices it, which is admirable (and expected on a show of this format.)

However, she is not informed as to the function of this pill - it's not an abortion, it just works like a very strong birth control pill before there is even an embryo, let alone a fetus. Elisabeth's metaphor of tossing a baby into a dumpster is like comparing apples to oranges.

And I'd be really surprised if her supporters here don't use any kind of birth control themselves. too bad they're too busy thumping bibles to listen long enough to get the facts.

And by the way PJ, I'm a typical upper class white woman - you might want to check your assumptions about people, beeyatch.

42. Like others here, I think Elisabeth's arguments are often misguided, but I feel she is being wrongly blamed here. She was no more vituperative today than many others have been on that show, and if Walters has such a problem with loudly voicing your opinion (no matter how offbase it may be) than she wouldn't have hired Rosie O'Donnell.

I find it ironic that many here who would probably proclaim freedom of speech loudly and chastise conservatives for blindly following a foolish leader seem to be blindly following the ideology that no one is entitled to an opinion unless it agrees with your own.

44. Elizabeth gets on my nervous so bad. She needs a life so bad. It must be nice to be married to a NFL player and never want for anything. One day the real world is going to bite her in the ass. I think that when gets pregnant with baby #2 she will not be asked to come back on the show. The View is going down hill fast. I give it 1 more year on the air.

45. Concerning the logic used by Laura (#23) that although she personally could not have an abortion, she has no right to say that others could not--this same logic could be applied, only substituting the word "slavery" for abortion. After all, at one time slavery was legal in this country, but that did not make it right. We are endowed with certain rights by our Creator, not by the laws of the land. Not all laws are just.

To Cupcake (#24)--no, everytime you have a period (shedding of unfertilized egg and uterine lining) you are not having an abortion. One would think common sense would tell you that.

The truth: the morning after pill works twofold. It inhibits ovulation (so an egg is not released to be fertilized), and as a back up measure, if an egg IS released and fertilized, it irritates the uterine lining so that implantation of the embryo is not allowed. Biological fact: every one of us began our lives at the point of fertilization (conception), and our lives have been on a contiuum since then until our deaths. A human embryo is 100% human--can't become anything but a more mature human further along that continuum, and all the semantics in the world won't change the fact that it's a human. Our society has conditioned us to use euphemisms rather than call it what it is, which makes it much easier to devalue an entire class of human beings. Why do women who miscarry grieve over their loss? Because they knew they were carrying a baby. A child does not incur value simply because it is wanted and longed for--it's given value by its Creator from the moment it came into being. Abortion is simply denying the truth, that all of us are human and measureless in value, even the ones who aren't wanted.

Good for you, Elisabeth.
