Singer Accused of Illegally Killing Tame Bear

8/16/2006 3:37 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Troy Lee GentryDULUTH, Minn. (AP) -- Troy Lee Gentry, of the country singing duo Montgomery Gentry, has been accused of killing a tame black bear that federal officials say he tagged as killed in the wild.

Gentry, 39, of Franklin, Tenn., and Lee Marvin Greenly, 46, of Sandstone, appeared Tuesday before U.S. Magistrate Judge Raymond Erickson in connection with a sealed indictment returned by a federal grand jury in Minneapolis.

Authorities allege that Gentry purchased the bear from Greenly, a wildlife photographer and hunting guide, then killed it with a bow and arrow in an enclosed pen on Greenly's property in October 2004. The government alleges that Gentry and Greenly tagged the bear with a Minnesota hunting license and registered the animal with the state Department of Natural Resources as a wild kill.

Gentry allegedly paid about $4,650 for the bear, named Cubby. The bear's death was videotaped, and the tape later edited so Gentry appeared to shoot the animal in a "fair chase" hunting situation, the government alleges.

If convicted, both Gentry and Greenly face a maximum penalty of five years in federal prison and a $20,000 fine. Gentry's manager, Johnny Dorris, said Wednesday that Gentry, an outdoorsman and hunter, expects to be exonerated.

Gentry "relied on the knowledge and expertise of a local guide to obtain the proper permit," Dorris said in a written statement. "Troy felt what he did was legal and in full compliance of the law and was surprised to hear of the indictment."

Greenly did not return a phone message seeking comment.

Montgomery Gentry, along with co-singer Eddie Montgomery, are known for hits such as "My Town" and "If You Ever Stop Loving Me."

If the story is true, I agree with the thread of comments. But let's remember something. He hasn't been PROVED guilty in a court of law. That is, after all, one of the basic tenets of our legal system. So before we boycott and condemn and call names (anonymously--real guts there), let's let the conviction happen first. Then, yeah, if it's true, I have to agree--what a jerk! If it's not true, then the reporter is the jerk. The half-a-spit's worth of "evidence" in the article is all we (the public) has seen.

WTF?

This man deserves to be put in a cage, chased down and shot with an arrow....right thru his hard little heart. He is the true animal. To shoot a tame bear and then try to fake that he is some big hunter man......what a piece of crap.
I hope to God fans will boycott this creep and he will go to jail.

Is this manager (Dorris) saying because Gentry had a proper permit that this makes it OK? He expects to be exonerated? He doesn't believe he did anything wrong? Is this guy nuts? Certainly the way to handle damage control. Doesn't appear the public is going to exonerate him anytime soon. If we boycott his records, concerts, etc., he'll lose much more than a nothing $20,000 fine. What a chicken 's * * t!

Keepin' It Real

NWTF! Who in their right mind thinks that any part of killing a harmless penned up pet bear with a bow and arrow is okay? I don't care if he did pay $4,000 for the bear, apparently just to shoot it... there is just something so f--ked up about the whole idea of killing a defenseless tame bear like that. And the guy who sold it to him to shoot like that. SHAME ON YOU BOTH!

I've never posted here (or on any of these sites for that matter), but I just have to add that I totally agree with the previous posts (and am a bit encouraged that NONE of the posts so far support him)- he should be put in pen, naked, with a non-tame grizzly. Yup, I too WAS a fan- Troy you disgust me! There is a special place in hell for animal and children abusers. What the eff is wrong with these people. Its 2006, not the stone ages!

It's nice to see that everyone has waited for a ruling and not rushed to judgement. If it's true, yeah, something should be done. If it isn't true, he shouldn't be branded a POS, loser, and many of the others he has been called here.

WTF?

When you call the Judge's office, you will be advised to put your complaint/opinion in writing. They will advise you not only to address Judge Erickson, the District Court Judge, but also Judge Paul Magnusom, the Chief Magistrate Judge.

I spoke with Vicki Miller (?) at the Judge's office and she states they have been inundated with phone calls from all over the country. She was very nice and said that she would forward my message to both judges.

This man should not be allowed to get off with a slap on the wrist. I hope every one who is outraged over this contact the judge.

Thank you#29 for the information.
