Celebs Who Claim They're Green but Guzzle Gas

10/18/2006 12:45 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Hybrid cars are all the rage in Hollywood. Celebrities drive them like they're a badge of honor. You save a few gallons of gas, you save the planet. Right? Well, not when you hop on a private jet and burn enough fuel to propel NASCAR through 2050.

Of course, the stars need to go here and there. The location shoots, the fabulous vacations, etc. But that's why God created United Airlines. G-IV's, on the other hand, were created in the image of precious celebs.

Julia Roberts

On the ground: Roberts drives a Prius, which gets (at best) 60 miles to the gallon, shaving 30 miles off a normal car's mpg.
In the air: Chicago/LA, 1,749 miles in a private jet, the route she took with Rupert Everett while shooting "My Best Friend's Wedding."
Gas guzzled: 2,100 gallons of jet fuel.
Prius Penance: Julia would have to drive 30,000 miles, or roughly once around the earth and then some to even out her consumption in the air.
So Julia says: No word yet from Julia's rep.

Jennifer Lopez

On the ground:
J-Lo tools around in her 60 miles-per-gallon Prius.
In the air: LA /New York, 2,475 miles in a private jet. Lopez was actually sued by a private jet company for allegedly skipping out on the bill, though she says it's all a misunderstanding and she was not supposed to be billed.
Gas guzzled: 2,750 gallons of jet fuel.
Prius penance:
She'd have to drive 45,000 miles, and that's a lot longer for Jenny than just going down the block. It's actually more like twice around the earth.
So Jennifer says: There was no comment from Lopez's rep.

George Clooney

On the ground: George favors a Tango, an electric car that gets a whopping 135 miles to the charge.
In the air: Los Angeles/Tokyo, 5500 miles in a private jet.
Gas guzzled:
7,000 gallons of jet fuel.
Electric shocker: Even with his super-saver Tango, he'll have to drive over 57 oceans -- Pacific Oceans to break even.
So George says: Clooney's rep, publicist Stan Rosenfield, tells TMZ, "You clearly have no understanding of certain people's need for private transport," and points out that Clooney often has "no control" over his travel schedule.

Brad Pitt gets off his private jetBrad Pitt

On the ground:
Eco-champ Brad is yet another Prius-lover, and he reportedly has several hybrids in his stable.
In the air: Los Angeles/Namibia, 9,400 miles in a private jet.
Gas guzzled:
11,000 gallons of jet fuel.
Prius penance: Brad burned enough fuel to take a Prius to the moon.
So Brad says: Pitt didn't have any comment. His rep tells TMZ that Pitt is out of the country.

Leo fueling his PriusAnd the true-blue Green Award goes to ... Leo DiCaprio.

On the ground: Leo drives a Toyota Prius
In the air: Leo flies just like us folk -- commercial, unless he positively must fly private because of scheduling.
Prius penance: None.

Oh how the left loves to ratiionalize everything. This was just one flight, these people take these planes 2-3 time a week. Fly to Tokyo to eat Sushi, we can be back to New York in 3 hours to catch a movie. That would be fun.... Wake up America!!! George Clowney has burned more gas in the last 10 years than the state of Deleware. Global warming.... Whatever.... what crap will the left come up with next to try to get elected...

This is a pointless article. I commend these people for making a difference. Should we slam firemen for using extra water to complete their jobs? You are the same people who would condem these celebs for boarding a major airline when their presence caused a commotion.
Lets invistigate something important and up to date! (a lot of your facts where from older movies)

It is very interesting to see how people pick on celebrities on this gas issue, but I think we should look around on this beautiful planet of ours to see how many factories and plants are poluting the air. It's not just the gas....it's deeper than that. And since so many people want to see the celebrities not using private jets, I would like to ask if any of you have an idea about inventing an electric jet which would use electricity instead of fuel. Because I don't know of any Toyota Prius being able to fly yet....And why don't you leave these people alone, they have worked hard to get where they are and paid a price that people who are criticizing them have no clue about. They can drive whatever they want and fly whichever way they want, they have earned the right to do so and people who grip about it have not. It's jealousy and envy that some don't have what the stars have. I assure you nothing fell from the sky in their lap, so to those who are complaining, one advice: get a life and look for ways to make your life better and let the celebs drive whatever they want. Most people who complain about these people, would drive the same luxury cars if they would have them. It's all about the perspective.

They all disgust me. The Hollywood of today doesn't hold a candel to the patriotic stars in Hollywood during WWII. Today's are just pampered, spoiled elitists that don't do as they say. They're special don't you know. They really are pathetic.

AT LEAST THEY'RE TRYING??? NO!! When you fly in a private jet, but tell hardworking people 'if you drive an SUV, YOU are killing the planet,' they aren't trying. They are just being hypocrites. Their comfort and convenience apparently mean more to them than the damage they do to the environment. If the fad movement du jour was vegetarianism, would all you losers claim they had a good reason to eat at White Castle? Oh, of course! At least they're trying!!

There really is no excuse for this. It's sheer hypocrisy. These supposed stars put their own comfort and convenience before the eco-principles they claim to hold dear. But it's not just the hypocrisy--it's the magnitude of the hypocrisy. If hypocrisy were an olympic event, Arianna Huffington would get the gold medal.

I can't believe all the apologists for the "stars." There was once a time when Hollywood celebrities kept their views to themselves. That they come in for criticism for their profligate ways is totally justified. Today we have to be treated to what "humanitarians" these pampered bozos are, to swoon over thier good intentions and wish we were as saintly as them. As you might surmise, I don't buy it...and I haven't contributed to their wealth in years (I don't go to movies)

What gauls me about these celebrities is that they are so darn preachy about the environment. This article doesn't mention how much natural gas, electricity and water their mansions gobble up. This country has messed up standards -- actors, and athletes make more than people who actually contribute to society. I don't go to movies anymore.

Hey, If Leonardo DiCaprio can do it (i.e. fly commercial, drive hybrid) why can't the other celebrities? There aren't too many stars more in demand than him these days. It shows you celebrities can be "green" if they want to but "choose" not to. Instead many do it with an insincere heart and "act green" just to fool the public into thinking they concerned for the environment. What a sham. Makes me like Leonardo more knowing that he is one of the few that actually walk the walk. Hypocrite celebrities like Roberts, Lopez and Clooney disgust me!

They absolutely deserve the criticism! Yes they deserve privacy, yes they have tight schedules, but that's part of their job and they know it. They shouldn't get up and preach to everyone else when they burn more fuel than most. Typical liberal hypocracy. In the public eye they act all green but then when the cameras are not on them they burn more fuel in a single trip than I will use over the next 10 years! I'm glad someone exposed them.
