Audience Laughs at "Kramer," Seinfeld Pissed

In one of the most awkward moments in the history of late night television, a shamed Michael Richards appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman to apologize for his racist, hate-fueled rant. It wasn't meant to be funny, but the audience laughed anyway.

Richards agreed to appear on the show, even after Letterman took a comedic jab at "the guy who played Kramer" on the Top Ten list, at the request of his good friend and former co-star Jerry Seinfeld. Jerry was there to promote "Seinfeld" Season 7 on DVD.

As Richards began explaining the "nasty things" said about "Afro-Americans," the audience couldn't help but chuckle. Seinfeld, immediately scolded the crowd, saying "stop laughing, it ain't funny." But the crowd couldn't help themselves.

The confused fans continued to chuckle, and Richards seemingly blamed Letterman for the awkwardness. "I've already heard you make some jokes about it and that's OK, but I'm really busted up about it."

Richards admitted that he may have acted without thinking. "I'm hearing your audience laugh ... and I'm not even sure that this is where I should be addressing the situation."

4. Normally i would call BS on this apology. However, I have a few friends in the stand-up world and much like atheletes they go into 'the zone' and just start reacting and free-thinking when ad-libbing on stage. Its a creative process and after a few beers and when you're in the zone there are no boundaries you won't cross in search of comedic nirvana. Its a lenny Bruce thing for those of you familiar with him.

However, Kramer is no comedic genius and I get the vibe that deep down he does have issues (just like Mel Gibson..) and this kind of nastiness is probably rooted in racism of the nastiest kind. Surprising from a guy like this...

7. what he said was nasty and is horrible... I must say that, he lost his temper and we all lose our temper once in a while.

when some one makes you mad, you pick at them and try to hurt there feelings... He did it in public. Not only that , richards was also called a cracker. No body is saying anything aboutthe guy that said that.

Im not saying its ok, and i definetly don't aggree with what he said.. Im just saying that he lost his temper and the worst part was that he lost it in public, on stage, with a camera.

Im asian and if anyone got mad at me im sure that something about being chinese or japanese would be said to me, even if the person saying it is not racist.

8. GET OVER IT. People are making way too big of a deal out of this. Blacks can call whites name but how dare a white call a black a name. Sickening.

9. An African American (also Afro-American, Black American) is a member of an ethnic group in the United States whose ancestors, usually in predominant part, were indigenous to Africa.

It's unusual, but I'm guessing it's more of a generational thing. I think the audience laughter was due to most not knowing really what was going on.. I think the laughter had to do w/ the delay. Remember, these guys are standing in line to tape a show before the evening news would even air. They'd have no idea what was happening like us on the web. I thought his comments were not excusable and atrocious, but I saw his apology and I'd say compared to Mark Foley or Mel Gibson, the fact that he immediately got in front of a camera in front of a national audience and apologized directly is to his credit, as opposed to issuing a series of more apologetic press releases and/or checking into rehab and ducking for cover.

11. Maybe we should just shoot him. Would that make everyone feel better? Who in here has not said something out of anger? No one? OK then...shut the hell up. The guy made a mistake, apologized, end of story. But no, like the Mel Gibson thingy this will be headlines for weeks to come. The sensitivity and PC in this country makes me want to vomit.

12. He's right, The Late Show is NOT the forum for the "apology". Though no apology is neccessary since as heated as he was, he surely meant every word. Such a shame that a so called seasoned professional could not handle a standard in his industry...heckling. Not like he's never been heckled before. He's NOT that funny. But if your PR machine insists you make a statement, he knows there's BET. If he were really truly regretful for exposing himself, he should have gone to the people he offended. And the audience laughing at the situation is unfortunately not shocking. For whatever reason, racist comments towards African Americans still seems to "tickle" some. And Seinfeld didn't need to comment. This is a grown man with hatred in his heart. He can clean up his own mess. Best to distance yourself.

14. Funny how when a black comedian repeatedly uses cracker and white slurs on stage, nothing is ever said. Not excusing Richards, but let's level the field.
