Did Imus Get Off Easy at MSNBC?

"Nappy-headed hos" and "Get AIDS and die" -- both were said by personalities on the MSNBC airwaves -- one got a two-week suspension; one got canned. Does that sound right?
Don Imus, Michael Savage
Don Imus received a two-week suspension yesterday from both CBS Radio and MSNBC (which simulcasts his radio show) after he referred to the Rutgers women's basketball team as "nappy-headed hos." But four years ago, Michael Savage, who had a weekend show on MSNBC at the time, referred to a caller as a "sodomite" and said he should "get AIDS and die." Savage was fired in what was referred to at the time as any "easy decision" by MSNBC spokespeople.

Imus and his crew have a long history of making comments that might be considered inappropriate; they once called the New York Knicks a group of "chest-thumping pimps."

As part of his suspension yesterday, an MSNBC statement said, "Our future relationship with Imus is contingent on his ability to live up to his word."

Does he even deserve a future? Vote.

16. I guess the only thing to do is to just KEEP ALL MENTION OF BLACK PEOPLE out of your show if you are on the radio or TV. Just don't mention them unless absolutely necessary. It's obvious that whatever you say about a black person, you may be setting yourself up for trouble.

Imus should never have said those words tho. Where did that come from anyway? Strange thing to say. He should NOT be fired, tho. Ridiculous.

18. 1. It is wrong for blacks or anyone else to use racial slurs and derogatory terms. We need to become more civil as a society and understand that certain actions/words are just not appropriate.

19. Don Imus is under contract, so he gets paid weather he works or not. Since they didn't give him a fine also, like the always do Howard Stern or Mad Cow, they just gave him a two week PAID vacation. I would say tey just awarded him for his actions.

20. 7. You have a point there. The black community should be just as up in arms about
homophobic comments, etc. This is going to evolve in to a much wider debate and
it is about time.

22. I get so tired of Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton. They are like buzzard who sit and
wait for someone to make a comment that they don't like.
Talk about the pot calling the kettle black ( I'm sure they be on my doorstep for saying
something that innocent).
BOTH Jackson and Sharpton have made documented racial remarks against white
people but are they ever help accountable? NO
I think that they do African Americans a serious disservice. They use the race card as a
crutch. Don Imus insults everyone~ white, black, poor, rich, fat, skinny. No one is
culled from his humor. In the best of taste, maybe not but It's what he does. You have
a remote. Turn the channel if you don't like him.

23.
Please help me understand why Rosie O'Donnell can say anti-American comments & bash our president, and the left says "freedom of speech". On the other hand Imus (whom I can't stand any more than Rosie) makes his nasty comments and it turns into a National PR Media event! He has his job threatened, he publicly has to apologize over and over. Then, our TV is flooded with press conferences that hold more media coverage than the President gets. Personally, I am insulted to think that the media had to drive this nail into the coffin when 99.9 percent of the American public has the sence to know that the comments from the ignorant Imus were inappropriate and insulting. How is it Rosie O'Donnell, Howard Sterns, Keith Obermann and many other TV commentators can get away with saying anthing they want about anyone they want? Seems to me accountability is a one-way street anymore. Why has it always got to be a race issue that gets inflated? Insulting anyone of any race any time should be inappropriate in these far too politically correct times.

24. personally i don't and have NEVER ever listened to don imus. i think that he is just doing this for publicity. he's probably not getting ratings as he'd like or think he should and did this to outrage a community. it's really hip these days anyways to say something offensive about black people so what makes him different. maybe he was drunk or something? i'm definitely not letting him off the hook but seriously think it was all for ratings. HOW SAD!

25. Imus has always been a racist and he has always put down women. He is a red neck,(not the good kind) that should be put in his place,. #19 is right, they just rewarded him for his actions.

26. What Don Imus did was so over the top. Someone who is suppose to be educated and on tv for all to hear and comes up with something like this. Please! There are white players on the basketball team. What di d he say about them. Why did he have to pick on the black players. And he says he is a good person. Good people don't talk about other people that way. AND HE'S NOTHING TO LOOK AT! No it is not right for black rappers to talk about women. Like to old saying goes. Two wrongs don't mak a right. He just slide the words right out of his mouth. TO EASY!!

27. I agree that Don Imus should have used better judgement with his comments, but what about Rosie??? Shouldn't she be thrown off the View ?? She was out of line with her comments about our President. Like him or not, he deserves our respect.

30. While I personally would never have made such a comment in public (nor private for that matter), we live in a free country where we covet freedom of speech. We can't choose when it's ok to say things, and when it's not ok. It is wrong for anyone to use derogatory speech, whether or not they be a person of color. But to call for the firing of someone because they said something we don't like, is not the answer. Remember, sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me.
