Did Imus Get Off Easy at MSNBC?

"Nappy-headed hos" and "Get AIDS and die" -- both were said by personalities on the MSNBC airwaves -- one got a two-week suspension; one got canned. Does that sound right?
Don Imus, Michael Savage
Don Imus received a two-week suspension yesterday from both CBS Radio and MSNBC (which simulcasts his radio show) after he referred to the Rutgers women's basketball team as "nappy-headed hos." But four years ago, Michael Savage, who had a weekend show on MSNBC at the time, referred to a caller as a "sodomite" and said he should "get AIDS and die." Savage was fired in what was referred to at the time as any "easy decision" by MSNBC spokespeople.

Imus and his crew have a long history of making comments that might be considered inappropriate; they once called the New York Knicks a group of "chest-thumping pimps."

As part of his suspension yesterday, an MSNBC statement said, "Our future relationship with Imus is contingent on his ability to live up to his word."

Does he even deserve a future? Vote.

32. There is a double standard that exists in tha Black Community. They have disrespect for the women of their community and continually pharse this in their comedy and music. It boggles my mind. Everyone else should be held to higher Standard except them. Until the Black Community hold their women in respect they can not perscute others for their mistakes. The man said sorry, He is going to do better. What do you want BLOOD.

34. Imus's comments seem mild to me coming from a shock jock. People tune in to his type of show to hear crap spewed forth. I don't get the appeal but hey... If African americans didn't say these type of things to each other I would find this more offensive.

Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson seem like hypocrites trying to end Imus's career, when they happily went on after slurring Jews in the worst ways. Also, they mostly giving rappers a free pass, whose screaming hatred of women is much worse and seems real. Why aren't they picketing the rappers whose influence on young men dwarfs any tiny influence Imus might have.

35. Imus is a second rate talent at best. Fire his racist ass. Then you other Imus ass-lickers will have to pick up the pieces of your lives and move on.
Nuff said.

36. If Imus had sang his comments with a beat playing in the background would there be a problem? I'm not a fan of Imus' show but is it ok for Snoop Dogg or Jay-Z to use similiar or even worse remarks? Why? Rap music continues to degrade women in their lyrics and videos and people still support and flock to it. Imus made a mistake. He's not the first and he sure as hell won't be the last. I'm black and I just don't think he should be made the example.

37. IMUS hasn't been funny or even remotely entertaining since 1982, when we got Howard on WNBC in NYC. Howard is far more cutting edge, way more hilarious, and at the same time knows where to draw the line and piss the most amount of folks off. Without outright racial slurs most importantly OUT-OF-CONTEXT.

IMUS is on basic cable every morning, nostly the frightening image we saw in PRIVATE PARTS, with that silly cowboy hat and methusalah gross face. He went on to Sharpton's show, to boot, and said "I can't get anywhere today with YOU PEOPLE" in this context is just another stupid thing to say, although inherently not wrong, within context of apologizing for racial stuff, YOU PEOPLE is just as ignorant as it gets/

38. While it is Imus's show and he has control over the content....the person who is a repeat racist on that show is Bernie! His comments are often laced with bigotry and sexism to the point of being offensive to anyone with a brain! I think Imus follows him and gets sucked in to much off the off color(no pun intended) stuff. that being said, a 2 week suspension is punishment enough for this "crime". Sharpton and Jackson are making way too much of this issue. They both practice a form of reverse racism that is so extreme, it often hurts their cause. Bottom line is they are just words, and as pugnatious and ignorant as they may have been ....it was a joke gone bad....GET OVER IT! MOVE ON!

39. Imus is a idiot, he always talks down about women and minoritys. He should have been off the air long ago. And as far as giving him two weeks off without a fine, yes that is just rewarding him for his actions

40. Imus is getting a bad rap. He said a terrible thing but I believe that he has realized the error of his statement. Anyone who listens to his show knows that he insults everyone. I never agree with everything he says, but he holds politicians feet to the fire . His countless hours dedicated to military personnel, his charitable works on many levels should not be ignored. He is not a racist . Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson are just trying to create a race issue out of this. I have never heard Al Sharpton retract his slanderous statements about the Duke players. They are sorry excuses to have the tilte of reverend. Neither one of them every walk teir talk...just always stir up trouble. Now Sharpton is threating to boycott advertisers if Imus is not fired. I can not stand for these two men to dictate their agenda on the rest of us. I am not watching MSNBC or NBC until Imus is back on the air. What will run in place of Imus in the morning? The Al Sharpton radio show?

41. I want to too ask one question...
What would be your social situation if your parents and grand parents were not allowed by the government to get an education or have access to the same life opportunities as everyone else?

42. Don Imus said he was sorry, but he didn't act like he ment it. And as far as Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton, they live and wait for things like this so they are just as much to blame.

43. Don Imus has done a tremendous amount of good for sick children regardless of their race. How much money have Jesse and Al taken out of their own pockets to help their own race? Both of these men have checkered pasts and should not hold themselves out as examples of how to live. Imus apologized more than once. He seems genuinely upset by this incident. The fact that Al Sharpton got to beat up on him on his show is more than enough pentence.
Imus I think it's now reached a point where you tell them it was a poor, in bad taste joke and to F--- O-- if they can't accept your apology.

44. Who the f**k cares about this whole thing other than the issue of free speech in this country. The guy is a comedian and what he said is funny...though not in the best of good taste.

AMERICA...GET A LIFE !!!!!!!

45. No one has discussed how these women dress. Like it or not we are all judged by our appearance. Take a look at other sports: tennis, golf, skating, whatever. None look as trashy as basketball players have chosen.
These are women in college who one would hope will go out in a bussiness world. Creating a clean cut image is worth a thought.
