Did Imus Get Off Easy at MSNBC?

"Nappy-headed hos" and "Get AIDS and die" -- both were said by personalities on the MSNBC airwaves -- one got a two-week suspension; one got canned. Does that sound right?
Don Imus, Michael Savage
Don Imus received a two-week suspension yesterday from both CBS Radio and MSNBC (which simulcasts his radio show) after he referred to the Rutgers women's basketball team as "nappy-headed hos." But four years ago, Michael Savage, who had a weekend show on MSNBC at the time, referred to a caller as a "sodomite" and said he should "get AIDS and die." Savage was fired in what was referred to at the time as any "easy decision" by MSNBC spokespeople.

Imus and his crew have a long history of making comments that might be considered inappropriate; they once called the New York Knicks a group of "chest-thumping pimps."

As part of his suspension yesterday, an MSNBC statement said, "Our future relationship with Imus is contingent on his ability to live up to his word."

Does he even deserve a future? Vote.

61. I'm amazed at how many people here are defending his comments. He was talking about a college sports team who just won the national title. It's a whole seperate issue from the lyrics in rap music, these women do not control what words are used in songs. Imus and his producer should have been congratulating them on their huge achievement, but instead made insulting and uncalled for negative comments on what was for the team a major accomplishment. I support the team 100%, they have every right to be offended. Too sensitive as one poster wrote? No, it's not a matter of being too sensitive. It's a matter of respect. These women did not deserve to be called those names, and regardless of what Sharpton or anyone else has to say, it is the team who is most effected by his derogatory words, and he himself has said he was wrong. Bravo to the women of the basketball team and congratulations on the great season. That is what i say, and that is what Imus should have said. They earned it and deserved the praise that any sports team would get for such a great season. IMO.

62. Why did it take TMZ so long to get on this story -- nearly a week?? Suspicious !!??

63. He was wrong to insult a group of outstanding athletes who had just accomplished an outstanding feat. To reduce them to ridicule both racist and sexist was a horrible thing to do to these fantastic young people. I'm sorry they have agreed to meet with him. I wish they would just ignore him.
When you have to tear people down in order to appear funny, there is something terribly wrong with you, your sense of humor and an audience that enjoys your efforts. The spotlight is now on Don Imus, let the sponsors and the ratings decide his fate from this point on.

64. what ever happened to "sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never harm me?" Don Imus has freedom of speech as does every red blooded american in this country. Don Imus has every right to poke jokes, and make stupid coments all day long under the constitution of america. whoever doesnt like it can move into a communist country and live under the strict rules of the government. jesse jackson spews hate every day when he wants everyone who doesnt behave the way he wants them to to be punished. jesse jackson should take his fat little behind and edumacate all those "artists" that teach young children who listen to hip hop and rap to call their own ladies bitches and hos. not to mention to teach them that "i'll pop a cap in yo ass" is not proper use of the american language for the estute african american community. and as for the coach for the girls basketball team... she should call don imus and thank him for all this publicity and attention he brought to her and the team she is coaching, because before this "burp" don imus commited, i never knew of her or knew she existed. she should secretly send him some flowers and thank him for all this attention she is receiving because honestly i dont think anyone ever cared what she had to say before this incident.

65. Imus should have better control of his show no doubt! The real repeat racist is Bernie and Imus gets sucked into comments all the time. The reality of it is though, as pugnatious and ignorant as those comments were....they are just words and Sharpton and Jackson need to focus on larger issues! They practice a form of reverse discrimination that I find far worse , and more offensive than anything Imus or his racist ,sexist staff can come up with.

66. I cannot stand that MSNBC and other tv networks are allowing Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton to decide this issue. Who elected those two to be judge and jury?

67. Buster, you make a number of interesting observations. Generally speaking, women are conditions to believe that their worth is linked to their status as a man's wife or woman. Why are single women viewed with such disdain and asked "Why aren't you married yet?" or "What is wrong with you?" Often such questions come from those trapped in bad marriages.

Do you know any women who use the term "my husband" 100 times per day or "we" in reference to every little event, including going to the grocery store? It is almost like they cease to have a separate existence once they join the leagues of married women. In some cases, I forget my husband's real name because it is not used very often.

As for cheating, my grandmother used to say "A woman is a fool if she thinks she has a man all to herself." Society suggests that a woman must have a man, even a raggedy one, in order to mean something or be anything. That is ingrained in our young girls early on and reinforced by the media, family members, etc. In response many go along to get along and put their lives at risk everyday by continuing to live and sleep with men who cheat.

68. If you don't like what he says....don't listen. This is america and all of our rights are being taken away. How can the goverment tell me I have to wear seatbelts? And how can anyone say what another person can say and not say? Sharpton has really been the one who is showing his true colors. If a man can say "I am sorry" and I think really mean it, then let's forgive and forget. And these girls acting offended. I am not buying that for a moment. Why would they care what he say's? If that was my daughter I could care less. I would have raised her with a little more confidence than that.

70. His bashing days should be over...MSNBC if you have the balls he should be totally removed and never allowed to put his remarks out to people again......MSNBC...FIRE THIS MAN...HE NEEDS TO GO AWAY......HE IS A VILE MAN

71. He made a mistake and apologized numerous times. I believe he is sorry for what he did.
He should not be fired. Two weeks for someone in a high profile position is enough.
Those who call for his firing (Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpin) have certainly done worse in their careers.
Bring Don back. He does a lot of good for the community.

72. I think that it is a shame that in 2007, we still have an injustice for blacks, and justice for white's. The fact that he was suspended for 2weeks, is a joke. What is the purpose of suspension. I wonder, as an African American in this country, it is a sad, sad, situation. His excuse was he was not thinking. The fact that you need to be thinking to prevent you from saying a comment like that is an insult. Why the suspension, that means absolutely nothing.

73. Wow, the Imus thing is just crazy. I personally have mixed feelings about it. If any of you care to read it, one of our writers over at Highbrid Nation worked with Imus over at WFAN for several years and recently chimed in on the whole situation. He also reveals some details that the media is failing to report on in regards to the suspension
