George Michael Won't Do Time for DUI

6/8/2007 10:56 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

George Michael won't have to do any time behind bars for his DUI -- but he won't be able to drive for a couple years, and that's probably a very good thing.

Michael was in a London court today to face the music, after pleading guilty to "driving while unfit through drugs," and the judge slapped him with 100 hours of community service, banned him from getting behind the wheel -- fit or unfit -- of any car for two years, and made him pay a whopping $4,622 in fines. He's pictured (right) outside of court, possibly doing the dance to his hit "Monkey."

A cranky George told reporters, "Don't bother to ask any questions, because believe me I am not going to answer them." He called the media coverage of the case -- in which he was found slumped over his steering wheel after passing out in his car -- "farcical."

The cruise-challenged singer will next be seen performing at the first concert in the new Wembley Stadium in London this weekend.

George was given a fair, just sentence for a crime that he admitted to and was remorseful for. He was fined heavily and given 1000 (!!) hours of community service AND driving probation.

The only reason this is even being compared to Paris Hilton's case it timing. She was cited TWICE for driving violations, given a MUCH lighter sentence each time, and THEN she was sentenced to jail, where she continued to try to stay out of it.

While George, by his own admission, made some very stupid choices, at least he is owning up to them and serving his sentence.

As for being gay -- irrelevant. Homophobia.

As for his being a has-been? Ignorance. George is still one of the top-selling artists in the world -- outside of the U.S. (by choice) -- with a sold-out world tour under way as we speak.

I know you want some sent of outrage here, but a man is just serving his sentence -- and he apologized for committing an offense. News at 11.
