Rebecca Schaeffer's Killer Stabbed

Killer Robert John Bardo, who was convicted of stalking and killing actress Rebecca Schaeffer in 1989, was stabbed by another inmate yesterday. Bardo was stabbed 11 times while he and fellow inmates were walking to breakfast in the prison yard, according to Mule Creek State Prison officials. He survived the attack.

Schaeffer was the star of the 1980s sitcom "My Sister Sam." Bardo was obsessed with Schaeffer and stalked her for several months. He eventually tracked her down with the help of a private detective, and shot her to death when she answered the door of her L.A. home. She was 21.

The suspect identified as responsible for stabbing Bardo is serving an 82-years-to-life sentence for second-degree murder. Bardo was 19 when he stalked and killed Schaeffer. He is serving life without parole. The case led to the classification of stalking as a felony in California.

31. Your death penalty which is supposed to be a deterrent to crime doesn't seem to work. Posted at 1:09PM on Jul 28th 2007 by double standards...
Last time I looked your prisons were overflowing and crime was still rampant. What's the point?? The state is allowed to legally kill people while saying it is wrong to kill??? The bible says thou shalt not kill...which applies to everyone including the very officials who condemn killing. Double standard don't you think?

No, it's about revenge and justice for murders.
But apparently, it costs WAY MORE TO KILL THEM THAN TO KEEP THE SORRY BASTARDS ALIVE.

33. Here in the South, we have a different way of looking at justice. If you were raised in the South, by long-time Southners (not implants), justice is found at the end of a rope, not in sending someone to prison for life.

34. To bad he wasn't killed in the stabbing.

I have no sympathy for anyone who takes the life of another.

Yeah, thats what "they" say, but we all know it's about justice and revenge.

If someone killed your loved on- shot them in the face in cold-blooded murder, I think you just may want them dead, too. If the cops had a shoot out, and he was killed, I'm sure there would be no "hard feelings" for the cops, and no sympathy for the bad guy.

36. LMAO # 18 EMME - funny! I was gonna get him if you didn't. Obviously a Lib who's all against the cruel, inhumane death penalty.

South Dakota just had their first execution in 60 years - Elijah Page opted to give up his appeals, preferring to be executed over spending the rest of his life in prison for his part in the TORTURE SLAYING OF CHESTER ALLAN POAGE. Do a search and READ THE STORY! It is the most heinous crime imaginable, what these three monsters did to 19 year old Chester Allan Poage. They pretended to befriend him and tortured this poor boy till he was dead. This murder could not have been more cruel. And their motive was to rob his parents house.

RIP Chester Allan Poage.... age 19

37. IMO, this site is frequented by mostly conservitive-leaning men and women. I don't know where all the bleeding-heart liberals hang out at, but it's not HERE!

The Libs would never make fun of behavior that they themselves condone and accept in their "live and let live" mentality.

38. I remember watching this show as a child and falling in love with Rebecca and when I found out she died, I cried and was depressed for weeks. It was such a sad, traumatic event in my early years. How ironic of his fate!

39. As I remember, this case was a wake up call for Hollywood, as well as the nation. People realized how serious stalking can be. Laws were changed to prevent anyone obtaining private information from public agencies. Marcia Clarke (O.J. trial) successfully prosecuted Bardo. I don't know why this psycho didn't get the death penalty. There is another villian in this tragedy: the p.i. who assisted Bardo. He should have been held accountable.

40. It is only more expensive to Execute someone rather than hold them for life if we continue the appeals process as it stands today. That is where the change's need to be made in our system
We need to put more safe guards in place up front so that the right person is truly being executed and then stop the never ending circus of appeals.

41. Seanflynn- As someone else already pointed out the cost of execution is only higher because of the LONG drawn out appeals process furthermore, your research was lacking one key and quite expensive factor for the life imprisonment: THE PAY OF THE GAURDS WHO WATCH OVER THESE EVIL PEOPLE 24 HOURS A DAY... I am a criminal justice graduate I achieved my degree with high honors and needless to say just about everyone I know is a correctional officer. However in my classes the one thing we were told quite often was the extremely high cost of the appeals process as stated before if this were eliminated we would not have such high cost for the death sentence. AND AS I STATED BEFORE I KNOW A LOT OF PEOPLE THAT WORK IN THE JUSTICE SYSTEM AND THEY ALL EACH AND EVERYONE WILL TELL YOU THAT LIFE IN PRISON THESE DAYS IS NOT THAT BAD THEY GET TV AND SPORTS AND MEALS A HOME PEOPLE GIVE THEM MONEY AND WITH THAT THEY ARE ALLOWED TO ORDER FROM CATALOGS AND BUY THEMSELVES NICE THINGS NICER THEN A LOT OF PEOPLE WHO ARE HONEST HARD WORKERS WHO DECIDE BETWEEN NICE THINGS AND THE FOOD ON THEIR TABLE THE FOOD THAT INMATES RECIEVE FOR FREE. THEY ARE ABLE TO PLAY GAMES RECIEVE DEGREES FOR FREE DEGREES SOME PEOPLE CANNOT AFFORD TO GET OR DO NOT HAVE TIME AS THEY ARE WORKING SO HARD TO TAKE CARE OF THEIR FAMILIES. THEY GET DRUGS MORE EASILY ON THE INSIDE THEN THEY DO ON THE OUT AS A MTTER OF FACT QUITE A FEW ADDICTS WILL GET THEMSELVES ARRESTED ON PURPOSE SO THAT THEY MAY RECIEVE THESE DRUGS AND CAN USE EVERY DIME THEY HAVE TO BUY THINGS TO TRADE FOR THESE DRUGS BECAUSE THEY HAVE NO OTHER BILLS TO PAY AS EVERYTHING THEY COULD EVER NEED IS PROVIDED BY THE STATE. DURING MY COLLEGE YEARS I SPENT A GREAT DEL OF TIME A SEVERAL DIFFERENT PRISONS INTERVIEWING SEVERAL DIFFERENT TYPES OF CONVICTS RAPISTS MURDERS CHILD MOLESTORS AND SO FOURTH A NUMBER OF THEM FROM EACH CATAGORY ADMITTED THAT LIFE IN PRISON IS NOT THAT BAD HOWEVER THE ONES ON DEATH ROW DID SAY THE WORST FEELING IN THE WORLD IS KNOWING AND WAITING TO DIE!!! QUITE A FEW ALSO ADMITTED THAT IF EVER RELEASED THEY COULD NOT SAY THEY WOULD NOT DO IT AGAIM. THIS IS NOT TO SAY THAT SOME ARE NOT REMORSEFUL FOR THEIR ACTIONS AS A MTTER OF FACT I HONESTLY FELT BAD FOR A LOT OF THEM BECUASE THEY COMMITED THEIR CRIME AT SUCH YOUNG AGES UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF DRUGS AND THE GANGS THAT TOOK THEM IN BECAUSE THEIR PARENTS WERE JUNKIES 30 YEARS LATER THEY ARE OFF THE DRUGS AND ARE GROWN MEN WHO HAVE NOT EXPERIENCED LIFE HOWEVER THAT DOES NOT EXCUSE THEIR ACTIONS OR THE CHOICES THAT THEY MADE BECAUSE NOT ALL PEOPLE IN BAD NEIGHBORHOODS WITH CRACK-HEAD PARENTS TURN INTO MURDERS OR DRUG DEALERS OR ADDICTS THEY COULD HAVE GOTTEN GRANTS FOR COLLEGE AND MADE SOMETHING OF THEIRSELVES JUST AS EASILY AS THEY CHOSE THE OTHER PATH. ALL THIS SAID I HAVE NEVER BEEN A BIG SUPPORTER OF THE DEATH PENALTY DO TO THE IN ACCRACY OF OUR JUDICIAL SYSTEM AT TIMES AS WELL AS THE FACT THAT IF WE KILL SOMEONE THEN ARE WE ANY BETTER THEN THE MURDERER? BUT WHY SHOULD THEY LIVE IN EASE WHILE INNOCENT HARD WORKING PEOPLE STRUGGLE EVERYDAY TO MAKE ENDS MEET. I MAY NOT BELIEVE 100% IN THE DEATH PENALTY BUT I DO 100% BELIEVE THAT WE ARE WAY TO CONCERENED WITH THE RIGHTS OF CRIMINALS AND NOT NEARLY CONCERNED ENOUGH WITH EVERYDAY HONEST CITIZENS WHO ARE HARMED BY OR WHO HAVE TO PAY TAXES FOR THESE CRIMINALS I AM SURE THAT THERE IS SOME WAY TO MAKE THESE PEOPLE WORK TO EARN THEIR KEEP AND TO STOP TAX PAYERS FROM PAYING FOR THEM TO WATCH TV AND PLAY CARDS WHILE THE HONEST PEOPLE SOMETIME CAN NOT AFFORD THE LUXURY OF A TV. MAKE THEM PAY FOR THEMSELVES INSTEAD OF US PAYING FOR THEM AND MAYBE THE ADDICTS AND CAREER CRIMINALS WONT BE SO EAGER TO GO BACK TO JAIL! ONE LAST THING LIFE IN PRISON IS NOT EASY FOR THE FAMILIES OF THESE CRIMINALS BUT IT IS NOT SO HARD FOR THE CRIMINALS THEMSELVES! SORRY FOR THE RANT Y'ALL

43. to whomever suggested we "cut the appeals process down" to save money on death row inmates: so you want the death penalty, AND no appeals process? Are you insane? God forbid you ever get falsely accused, or find yourself in front of a judge and jury who are unduly harsh and sentence you to death for something others have been given different sentences for.

And whomever said it was about revenge: why is your revenge justified, but someone else's isn't? What if a murderer killed their victim because they were so enraged, felt so wronged, and felt as though justice had not been carried out? We'd still sentence them to death for that, thereby telling them that their response was illegal and wrong. So, OUR desire for revenge is ok, but the murderers isn't? If it's so "natural" and "a matter of justice" to want to kill people in revenge, then you can't punish anyone for doing the same. Moreover, you certainly can't kill someone to say killing someone out of spite was wrong.

I relate completely with your post.
It was also a scary time for many celebs and the public alike finding out anyone could get address's from the DMV.
A mute issue now days of course but then it had an impact and privacy laws were changed because of her death.
Unlike Lohan, Rebecca didn't cause her own demise.
She was a fine actress who was very excited about her life and grateful for her blessing's.

45. At the time of her murder anyone could go to the DMV and say they had an accident and get the persons address. Her murder caused the state of California to change this procedure. If that policy was not in place, maybe her life would have been saved. She also had a restraining order or him. Restraining orders don't work and the police department really needs to re-evaluate how they process and impliment them. Too many women are murdered that have restraining orders against someone. Case in New York recently when a young woman was being stalked after the trail about they gay raping her was dismissed. A restraining order was issued and he still murdered her for testifying against him.

MS. RITA TO OUR COURT SYSTEM

RESTRAINING ORDERS NEED TO BE INFORCED IN A DIFFERENT WAY. IF A RESTRAING ORDER IS ISSUED AND THAT PERSON SHOULD GO TO JAIL FOR 3 YEARS AND THEN THE 3 YEARS TO BE RESTRAINED

CHILD MOLESTING NEED TO BE INFORCED IN A DIFFERENT WAY...LONGER PENALITES 10 TO 15 YEARS IF CONVICED.
