Vick: I Found Jesus

8/27/2007 12:41 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Speaking in a quiet, contrite voice, former NFL stud Michael Vick faced the media outside of a hotel in Richmond, VA -- and accepted responsibility for his role in a dogfighting ring.

"I will redeem myself" said Vick, "I have to."

Vick wasn't specific about the acts he was sorry for, but declared, "Dogfighting is a terrible thing. I reject it."

Between apologies to everyone from NFL commissioner Roger Goodell to Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank -- to all the kids who used to look up to him, Vick declared that he's found Jesus and has turned his life over to God.

"I was ashamed and totally disappointed in myself, to say the least. I want to apologize to all the young kids out there for my immature acts. What I did was very immature, so that means I need to grow up."

Vick also dropped part of his apology in the third person saying, "I totally ask for forgiveness and understanding as I move forward to be a better Michael Vick the person, not the football player."

During the presser, Vick made it clear several times that he never "pointed the finger" and is prepared to face the consequences of his actions.

After speaking for nearly five minutes, Vick left the podium without taking any questions.

UPDATE: TMZ has learned that the judge has accepted Vick's plea.

Oh Puleeeze. Everybody who has to go to jail (i.e., Paris Hilton holding the Bible) suddenly finds Jesus. . . like Jesus was ever lost.

The only reason this sorry excuse for a man is doing this PR is because he got caught. Let us not forget how he told everyone he was innocent and how he swaggered into the courthouse for his first appearence saying he was going to clear his name.

Yup. We got your name right Vick and pretty soon you will be sitting the slammer praying you will stay alive. There are many, many prisioners that are animal lovers. . . and if I were you - I'd watch my back.

Oh - but of course - Jesus is going to help you after killing animals he created. Yep, yep, yep.

Mahatma Gandhi said: "The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated." If we as a civilized society choose to turn our heads and ignore violence perpetrated against helpless animals, then we have given tacit approval for violence against people as well. Yes, some day Vick will receive God's judgment (however one chooses to define God) for what he's done, and no way do I believe he conveniently "found God" yesterday. But in the meantime, he'll be judged by a court of law for his crimes. He's been judged unfit to represent the companies who would have paid him millions to endorse their products. He's been judged unfit to represent the Atlanta Falcons for the 2007-2008 season, and it's expected that judgment will result in legal action against Vick to recover the $22 million they've already paid him. So, yes, Michael Vick has been judged, by secular standards, and that's as it should be in a nation of laws.

Michael Vick is a liar. His "apology" was stating "I need to grow up..I was immature."
An immature act is something like dumping a beer over someones head. Stupid. What Vick did not apologize for was his heinous, cruel, torturous crime of murdering innocent "man's best friends" over many years. He has not made the connection that what he did was evil, mean, selfish and murderous. And what about 50 or more dead dogs buried in his back yard? What about all the hundreds of pups tVick had bred that die within a year after birth from puppy mills....drowned in bathtubs, strangled on neck cords because they couldn't "keep up" to make the grade as a fighting dog. What about all the dogs who were killed because they just couldn't be a fighter? Death for Michael Vick and his co-horts!!!

He was a "christian" while he did these cruel/ heartless acts. There is something very evil about a human being that can torture animals for kicks. He has only "found" Jesus to save his sponsorship $$$$. Michael and Paris must read the same "How to BS people by saying you've found Jesus" book.

Michael dogs are above you. They would never do to you what you did to them. John Mayer thinks you are funny - go hang with him.

He knew what he was doing and didn't care until he got caught. He makes footballers look really dumb if he thinks we would believe him. He and Paris use God.... bad move.

P'S - Jesus really doesn't look like that.

Many commenters don't understand Christianity or the Bible. Before speaking of MV's eternal destiny, read the Bible. Whether we spend eternity in heaven or hell is not determined by how good or bad we are, or the total sum of our actions. It's determined by what we do with Jesus Christ. Heard John 3:16 lately? Anybody can be forgiven. Nobody is beyond redemption. As long as you're living, you can ask Jesus to forgive and save you. Lots of people claim to be Christians, but their actions show otherwise. Jesus said, in Luke 6:43-44 "A tree is identified by the kind of fruit it produces. Figs never grow on thornbushes or grapes on bramble bushes. 45 A good person produces good deeds from a good heart, and an evil person produces evil deeds from an evil heart. Whatever is in your heart determines what you say." So don't condemn MV. Pray for him. Pray that he's sincere. There's not a GOOD person alive. Check yourself against the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:1-17) We're all sinners, we're all in need of forgiveness, and Jesus is the only hope of the world. John 14:6. If MV is sincere, this is the GREATEST thing that's ever happened to him.

He *found* Jesus?! Bet if he has been arrested in Iraq, he would have *found* Muhammad. Why in the world would anyone believe this man ? He engaged in such barbaric acts that our whole society deems despicable. Do you think that this man is going to lose sleep over a lie or 5000. Vick and all "people" who enjoy torturing and killing animals have no conscious and sociopathic tendencies. Our kids deserve better role models and other football players deserve a chance to play pro. Vick had his chance and I'm appalled that he hasn't been fire.

I sincerely hope that large animal lovers in jail are going to help him find Jesus, preferably in the showers.............. and then I fervently hope that he burns in Hell for his wicked and cruel treatment of man's best friend

Isn't it funny how people that are convicted find God once they are behind bars or on their way there?Vick should have "found god" years ago when he was younger.Remember the commandment Thou shall not kill. What a sad individual he is.

I believe he is walking around with chains hanging onto his concious that its chocking him , for all the misery and pain he done to these dogs, you see God creataed these animals for us to love, and when you go against him ,you will go down and be in misery and this is the place he is. He had it all and he thew it all away when he decided to play God with his dogs. He's a Thug. But if anybody can forgive someone it would be God. I'm not a judge. But prison time 5 yrs or more oh yea!!!

I would like for people to think about this. We all make mistakes. (Certainly some bigger than others) and most of the time receive or hope to receive mercy or punishment accordingly. That's fine. That's human. That's Life. But what should be unacceptable is for such people in the midst of their trangressions to suddenly proclaim "Jesus" name. The have found Jesus. Jesus was never lost. When such a comment is made at the same time guilt has been established and proclaimed, the person is simply not sincere. If he'd said he found Jesus when he got out of jail that would have been more believeable but really what are the odds that he has suddenly found Jesus know. I wonder how true christians feel about this more importantly how does God feel about it. I speak from the point of view of an enlightened agnostic.
