Original Temptation Ain't Too Proud to Sue

Otis Williams, the only surviving member of the original Temptations, is suing three former members of the band for using the name "Temptations" -- which he claims they don't have the right to do.

In a lawsuit filed on Friday, Williams alleges that he is the only person with rights to the name "The Temptations," but Glenn Leonard, Ali Woodson and Barrington Henderson -- former members of the group -- have been performing under the name "Legendary Lead Singers of the Temptations" and/or "The Temptations Reunion Show" since 2004.

Williams claims they are infringing upon his ownership of the name -- and that by accepting lesser billing at certain shows, they are hurting his reputation. He also claims that they are accepting fees "considerably lower" than the standard fees charged by Williams for performances by the Temptations.

According to court documents, Williams is also suing managers who worked with the "Legendary Lead Singers of the Temptations," as well as venues which promoted them. He claims that advertising used to promote the band was deceiving and hurt his ability to work as the Temptations.

Williams is seeking the maximum amount of damages under the law, as well as interest on all damages awarded, legal fees, and -- get this! -- any properties and assets obtained by the profits of the defendants' infringing activity. Get ready, cause here he comes!

SBE Entertainment, one of the defendants in the case, had no comment. Another defendant, Nick Scully, had not seen the lawsuit and could not comment. Attempts to contact Glenn Leonard, Ali Woodson, Barrington Henderson and the other defendants named in the case were unsuccessful.

Pop-up Blocker. In Internet Explorer - go to Tools & Pop-up Blocker & Pop-up Blocker Settings & Filter Level: Medium - block most automatic pop-ups.

PS - you can chose High - but some pop-ups support websites' functionality.

19. If the man somehow got his hands on the rights to the name, then he should be able to to what he wants.

If you became famous, started calling yourself "Boom Boom Shabam Bam", and you got the rights to it, no one should be able to use that name.

23. Lots of BABIES here I see. lol Otis is the greatest. He FORMED the Temps and kept it together for the last 50 years and they still perform to sold out crowds. Yes, I'd say he has earned the right to the name. Those so called "hard working guys" stoled the name because they can't make it on their own. They signed contracts saying they had no right to the name so it's just them trying to ride on the coattails of a GREAT band that they no longer are a part of. I don't think any of them belonged for long anyway.
Hey, you should see the movie The Temptations, it's excellent, has great music and you can see part of the story of how they were formed and who belonged. OR, get Otis's book, it has the full story.
TEMPTATIONS, FOREVER.

26. I hope he gets every penny and every asset the purchased with money they collected from using the Temptations name. This man and his other esteemed partners built a name! They built it from work and talent. Whether he can still perform I do not know but I do know that others should not be performing by using any form of the Temptations name what so ever. How would you feel if a fake came out pretending to be one of your favorite artists? Would you feel lied to, cheated and swindled?
You racist morons should stop posting if you have no intelligent comment other than trying to stir up an arguement!

29. The Temptations are and always will be one of the greatest groups known to man. All members put in such hard work, heart, and soul to make the Temptations legacy what it is today. Otis is a phenomenal leader and was the backbone of that group; he is synonymous to the name. I do agree a renunion tour with Otis in his rightful place would be the good dose of soul music that America needs today. Good luck to Otis and the remaining Temps equally, hope all works out for everyone. Once again, my hats off to The Temptations.
