Trying his hand at humor on this morning's "Early Show" -- and failing miserably -- CBS anchor Harry Smith joked to David Spade that Spade was "the only one still alive" in an old "Saturday Night Live" cast photo. *crickets*
The photo, taken during Spade's first season on the show, does feature the late Phil Hartman and Chris Farley -- both of were close friends of Spade's. Among the people in the photo who are still alive are megastars Adam Sandler and Chris Rock. Maybe ya heard of 'em?
Spade handled the situation quite well, and moved on in the interview. Harry? Not so much.

I saw this and couldn't believe it. Rather heartless of Harry. But, I've thought that guy was a doofus ever since 9/11 and his horrible reporting during the event. I hope he apologizes -
It was a very insensitive thing to say. He should have known better. Maybe
it will be his career that's dead...
I laugh at other's misfortunes:
I believe a public apology followed by a period of temporary termination is appropriate punishment for this fool's idiotic comments. Spade should have got up and kicked baldy's ASS!!
I caught that little remark also and regardless of who's still alive, that was not cool at all. - how rude!!! I am so proud of David for keeping his #$%! together on that one (don't think I could have). Cheers!
Better take a closer look at the picture -- there are only 10 cast members currently alive. Danira Vance died in 1994.
Foot in mouth, Pt II
I saw the Early Show this morning. I was appalled that Harry Smith seemed to think it was okay to joke about the deceased-especially to Spade, who was good friends with Chris Farley. It was completely inappropriate! I think he owes the viewers a public apology-at least! Kudos to Spade for maintaining his composure & professionalism.
I don't know who this Harry Smith is but what he did was not cool at all.
Particularly bad when the photo features Julia Sweeney, who has had has a well-known fight with cancer, and Dana Carvey, who also almost died of heart problems/medical malpractice post-SNL as well.
