"Lost" Diary -- Meet Kevin Johnson

LostHey, it's Daniel from TMZ here, back with the last "Lost" Diary before our Writer's Strike hiatus.

I took off Thursday and Friday from work so I can stay home for four days straight and watch nothing but college basketball. Now that "Lost" is on, I kind of don't know what to do. Who would be the four number one seeds in the "Lost" tournament? I go with Ben, Locke, Jack and Sayid -- I think they best represent what "Lost" is about. I'd have to put Widmore in my Final 4, though somehow he's becoming more and more of a player as things go on.

For all you "Lost" Diary newbies, here's how it goes: I gather with a group of friends watching "Lost," writing what happens on the show as it happens, and throwing in my two cents along the way. I am watching tonight's episode of "Lost" alone as Lauren is MIA and Ari wanted to wait and watch with her. Lauren's commitment to "Lost" is embarrassing these days and frankly I think it's time I take the show on the road once "Lost" comes back from hiatus. Anyone got room on their couch for me? I'll bring the chips! Let's roll ...

9:00 -- Previously on "Lost" is as a season 2 greatest hits package -- since that's the last time we saw Michael.

9:01 -- Locke is hosting a tupperware party of sorts as he brings everyone up-to-speed on what's been going on. Another scene where people tell other people things we already know.

9:02 -- "We kinda, like, knew that forever ago." -- Hurley to Miles when Miles says the freighter is there for Ben.

9:03 -- "My spy on the freighter is Michael." -- Ben. To quote Hurley, "We kinda, like, knew that forever ago."

9:04 -- "I'm here to die." -- Michael to Sayid when Sayid asks him why he is on the boat. Michael, could you be a little more specific?

9:09 -- Ben is giving Alex (who, along with Karl and Rousseau, looks weird in actual clothes) a map to the Temple. Perhaps, finally, we'll see what the rest of the Others have been up to.

9:10 -- Did anyone notice that, like, EVERYONE is listed as being a guest star tonight -- including LIBBY??? I don't even know what to make of this info right now.

9:11 -- We're flashing back now -- hopefully to explain how Michael ended up on the boat. Or maybe we're flashing forward, I don't know.

9:12 -- Did Michael just pin a suicide note to his jacket?

9:13 -- Yes, yes he did.

9:17 -- Didn't work though, as Michael wakes up in a hospital, looking a little worse for wear -- and dreaming of Libby.

9:18 -- The note pinned to Michael's chest was written to Walt. Something obviously happened to him, the question is what.

9:19 -- Apparently, Walt is just fine, living with Michael's mom. Not showing Walt is a clever way to cover up the fact that he he's, like, a foot taller than he should be.

9:21 -- "I want a gun. I want a gun with bullets." -- Michael. He wasn't kidding when he said he wanted to die. If at first you don't succeed by driving into a shipping container at high speed ...

9:22 -- Another ghost of island past -- it's Tom. Is he actually real? Can't be ... right?

9:27 -- Seems real enough. Oh right, this is months ago, so he's not dead yet. Totally forgot about that.

9:28 -- Tom tells Michael that the island won't let him kill himself. Did the island cause the car crash that kept Jack from jumping off the bridge at the end of last season? Hmmm ...

9:29 -- Others get to stay in penthouse hotel suites?

9:30 -- After Michael tries and fails to shoot himself in the head, a conveniently-timed newscast reveals the wreckage of Oceanic Flight 815 has been found. What fantastic timing!

9:31 -- According to Tom, it wasn't Ben that staged the plane crash -- it was Widmore. Either way, the point of the fake plane crash is the same -- to keep people from finding the island.

9:32 -- Tom even has an entire file -- complete with cemetery photos where Widmore got the the 324 bodies. Details, details, details.

9:33 -- Tom is trying to guilt Michael into being Ben's "guy on the boat" -- and he's doing quite a good job of it. We're just past the halfway point of this episode and I have to say, while it's interesting to see how Michael got onto the freighter, it would have been more interesting to see how he got from the island back to NY.

9:38 -- Not only is Kevin Johnson on the boat, but so are Minkowski and Naomi. What are the odds Kevin and Naomi ended up getting together? Thought I picked up on some vibes there from Naomi.

9:40 -- Is Miles ever NOT creepy?

9:41 -- Man, Tom would make a great football coach -- his motivational speeches are awesome.

9:43 -- Lawnmower Man is giving Michael his theory that Oceanic Flight 815 is really out there somewhere. Michael is probably more inclined to believe him than most.

9:44 -- What's in the box? Fax machine? Laptop? Camera?

9:45 -- The conveniently-timed random gunfire gives Michael all the motivation he needs to open the box, where he finds ...

9:46 -- ... a bomb ...

9:47 -- ... and Libby's ghost ...

9:48 -- ... and a note that reads "NOT YET." Watching Michael try and kill himself all these times is like watching "Groundhog Day" with Bill Murray.

9:53 -- Michael has a call from the mainland -- and it's Walt.

9:54 -- But it's actually Ben, trying to explain how he's different from Widmore and how he didn't kill Libby and Ana Luca -- Michael did. Michael already feels bad enough -- does he have to rub it in?

9:55 -- Ben is giving Michael the game plan for taking down the freighter. Sounds easy enough (and apparently it was).

9:56 -- And now we're back to now ("Spaceballs" reference) and Sayid is outraged that Michael is working for Ben. That's like the future pot calling the kettle black, no?

9:57 -- Sayid is selling out Michael to the captain, and I'm imaging the captain will shoot him in the head and grant Michael his wish. This is the act that will begin Sayid's downward spiral that leads him to go work for Ben.

9:58 -- Rousseau, Alex and Karl are making their way to the Temple. Almost forgot about them.

9:59 -- R.I.P. Karl.

10:00 -- R.I.P. Rousseau.

10:01 -- "I'm Ben's daughter!!!" -- Alex

It's important not to think of this episode as a season finale or anything like that -- it was just intended to be the 8th episode out of 16. So I don't want to hold it to the same standard that I would a finale of some kind.

That said, this episode fell a little short for me. As I mentioned before, I feel like we were kind of robbed of half of the "What Happened to Michael?" story. It was interesting to see how far into depression he sunk over killing Ana Lucia and Libby. And they did give him a pretty good reason for working for Ben, when really I never thought they'd have a real good one. But I can't shake the feeling that we missed a good opportunity (but I understand that they pretty much can't show Walt ever again).

All in all, I'd say we got a solid, but not spectacular episode of "Lost." I give it a C+. While there are plenty of things I liked about the episode, if I had said to you going in, "Tonight we find out what happened to Michael since he left the island and how he ended up on the freighter" -- wouldn't you have expected an unbelievable episode? I know I did.

As for the ending, there are two possibilities: 1) Lawnmower Man took the helicopter back to the island with some people and now they have Alex (just like Ben didn't want) or 2) Ben knew that Richard and company would never let Rousseau and Karl in the Temple, and they killed them (in which case Ben sent them out there to be killed -- assuming they're really dead).

Well it looks like we're off for about a month. I absolutely, positively promise I will do a question answer column on Monday over at thelostdiary.com -- I am way too far behind. Click here to send me a question.

Til then ...

16. First off, I love this show. It keeps my wheels turning. BUT I can't help feeling that we aren't getting all the info we need. Are they ever going to answer any definate questions? Like, how in the world do these people just come and go, (I know the sub, but how did they figure out that there was this vortex thing) WHEN did this vendetta with Ben and Widmore begin? Who was on the island FIRST? Are the original others that were roaming the island when Ben was a boy the ORIGINAL DHARMA, or have they been there forever? How in the world did Ben and Rousseau ever hook up? I thought she said that she was shipwrecked with her husband a long time ago....Did Rousseau have any trouble in childbirth? Why did she leave Ben in the first place (although I don't know how anyone could stay with him). Keep in mund people, we only have like 8 or so episodes until the END. Are we going to find everything out that we want to know, or is that the beauty of it, we can make all the assumptions?

17. I think that Ben was behind the killing of Karl and Rousseau. What better way to emotionally manipulate Alex than by taking away her two other closest allies. Ben is now the only one for Alex to go to (You're MIIIINNE!) and she will now have to depend on him. He looks like he's innocent of any involvement and wins her trust. I must say that I was very sorry to see Rousseau get killed off, I really liked her!

18. My favorite line is from Minkowski to "Kevin" - you gonna go all Nickelson on us - next thing you know you'll try and kil your wife with an axe...maybe that's really how the axe ended up in the side of the boat from last weeks epi....hmmmmm.....

19. maybe nothing new but pretty funny funny when he said he did it right or lived it up or whatever when he was off of the island,

20. This episode answered the questions surrounding "the list" and basically put Michael into Goodwin and Ethan's shoes, having to come up with his own list for the folks on the boat. Good episode. Quit bitchin'.

21. OK - so if peeps cannot die, what happened to Jin last week? Remember the graveside visit?

Posted at 10:35AM on Mar 21st 2008 by jjtex

22. Who said there is even a body in Jins grave?

23. Actually I'm more intrigued by how Michael came to be on the boat. More than likely when they left the island he just drove the boat to a port and went home. From what it sounds like, he didn't have any contact with the Others or anyone when leaving the island. So I think that story would have been less exciting.

I was surprised that there was no mention of the gay scene with Mr. Friendly. However, we pretty much knew he was gay. Remember in season 3, episode 1, Mr Friendly tells Kate to take a shower?

TOM: I'll tell you what, why don't you just take a nice hot shower -- wake yourself up -- wash the day off you and start fresh. There's a nice clean towel, soap, shampoo...

KATE [defiantly]: I'm not showering in front of you.

TOM [laughing]: Kate, you're not my type.

Also, I think Ben definitely sent Karl and Rousseau out to die. He doesn't care at all about Rousseau and Karl betrayed the Others many times at the end of last season. Plus he didn't want Karl around his daughter. Of course he wanted them dead!

24. 1.) i agree that this ep should get a c+ or b-, it was a good ep but i felt left hanging sinse theres a month hiatus

2.) im ALMOST absolutly sure it was freighter people who shot karl and rous at the end, did you see how bad theyre shots missed?! if they were the others they would be more careful in trying not to hit bens daughter anddd in michael's flashback the people who were trying to shoot the flying disks barely hit it

3.) i almost feel as if sayid is a bad guy at the end because ben has yet to be disproved that ben is actually trying to save everyone (or just the island)

4.) why did they do a close up on the kid in the window, it barely looked like walt

5.) the preview for the episodes to come were greatttt "we're all going to die" that was awesome

25. (Note, I didnt read any the above posts...)

WHY HASN'T ANYONE MENTIONED TOM CHEEK-KISSING THE GAY PENTHOUSE GUEST GUY????

That was the best part of last nights episode.

26. I agree it was somewhat disappointing but like others have said a lame Lost episode is still better then any other show out there.
I also agree with others being even more Lost. I really hope when the series ends we really get closer and clarifications. There just seems so much that I need cleared up. Like who/what/where/why were the people in the north or south pole that call Penny?
And yes how did Michael and Walt get off the island? Why did Locke see Walt when Ben shot him?
So many questions but I'll keep tuning in. Thanks for this blog, I look forward to reading it Friday mornings.

27. Hey #9. I think that the Others really will take care of Alex because she probably is someone that Widmore's people could use against Ben. The Others won't want Ben to spill the beans, even if they have disowned him. So maybe they will keep Alex for safekeeping?

28. Did anyone notice the graffitti on the wall to the left when Michael tried to shoot himself in the alley? It could be nothing but on this show it might just be some sort of clue...just wondering.I also found it interesting that we barely heard an "AYE"out of Desmond throughout the entire episode.Plus---- it's nice to see Libby is able to get her hair done even though she has gone to the great beyond.

29. GREAT episode to me! The whold Michael story was interesting to me. As far as the end, I believe #2) Ben knew that Richard and company would never let Rousseau and Karl in the Temple, and they killed them (in which case Ben sent them out there to be killed -- assuming they're really dead). Did anyone notice the look Ben gave Karl when they were all in the house and Karl had his arm around her. Ben DID NOT like that and you could read it all over his face!! Very protective father look there. I think he knew they would kill Karl and that was his whole plan! I love Lost! Best show on TV right now!!! I love the recaps. I look forward to them every Friday. Good Friday everyone!

30. I wasn't buying Sayid's running to tattle to the captain, 'ooh captain - this guy isn't who you think he is'... Sayid has struck me as far smarter than that of a tattle-tale. My hope is that it's a ploy to get in good with the captain, knowing he's been warned, 'don't trust the captain'. Although, his hatred for Michael is felt, it's pretty hypocritical of Sayid to be so upset when he himself has killed plenty.

When we were first introduced to Michael's Mom - I thought maybe that was who we saw Miles work his ghost-vision on to find a load of money.

Any Lost is a good Lost in my opinion. Sadly now, the withdrawl process begins. That is more torturous than listening to stupid Charlie sing, 'you all everybody!' Which sometimes still haunts me.
;0)
