Travolta's Son -- Fatal Blow to Head

1/3/2009 2:36 PM PST BY TMZ STAFF

TMZ has learned what may have killed Jett Travolta, and it's not what police have suggested.

We've spoken with John Travolta's lawyer and close friend, Michael McDermott, and family attorney Michael Ossi, both of whom are with John in the Bahamas. They tell TMZ it appears Jett's fatal injury was the result of hitting his head on the bathtub, toilet seat, or both. And they say the intimation that Jett went undiscovered for hours is absolutely false.

Police have said the last time anyone saw Jett was when he went to the bathroom on January 1. His body was discovered by nanny Jeff Kathrein the next day at 10 AM. In fact, McDermott and Ossi say it appears Jett went back and forth to his room and the fatal injury occurred "very shortly" before Jett was found on the bathroom floor -- McDermott called it a "small window of time."

McDermott and Ossi tell us two nannies were present on the trip and Jeff was by his side 24/7. There was a baby monitor device by Jett's side and there was also a chimer in the bathroom when the door opened.

McDermott and Ossi say it is still unclear if Jett fell to the floor as a result of a seizure or if he had a seizure after falling or slipping. There was blood on the floor of the bathroom, but "not a tremendous amount." It appears the striking of Jett's head was the cause of death, though it won't be clear until the autopsy is performed Monday morning.

Jett's body will be embalmed Monday afternoon. There will be a local showing on Tuesday and later that day the body will be flown to Ocala, Fla. for burial.

McDermott says both John and Kelly are night owls. John often goes to sleep at around 5 AM. But McDermott says both nannies were at the hotel and Jeff always present.

McDermott tells us a hotel manager was first on scene with Jeff and the two of them administered CPR. John came in shortly thereafter and John took over for a "substantial period of time [and] was performing CPR and continued that until EMT came and took over."

McDermott says as for Travolta and Preston, the pain is "unimaginable and unquantifiable."

UPDATE: The Grand Bahamas health minister confirms that the autopsy will be conducted by two pathologists to ensure a proper evaluation has been made. A clinical and forensic pathologist from Nassau, that is U.S. certified, will fly into Grand Bahama on Monday to help perform the autopsy.

Yes, in the future all Stars should go to St Barts---its where David Letterman, and Bob Saget go to find privacy. No bad luck there, at least not yet---oh wait, is that near where David Copperfield had that private Rape Island? Not sure if it was there or near the Bad Luck Bahamas, but, St Barts seems to be the place now for the stars that want to really get private.

My gosh the ugliness of Letterman and Saget in those photos when there is no makeup or hair pieces available is enough to make you gag.

Sorry if off topic here, but the point was the Bahamas are getting ugly for stars and tragic events. St Barts seems to be the next true hot spot. Ask "hiding in the closet" Letterman.

#5 you are a SICK person. How pathetic your life must be to post that.

And as for the "why" posts about the monitors, the chimes and the nannies, all we need to know is that obviously the Travolta's took every precaution to protect their precious child. They are LOVING parents and are in unimaginable grief.! Focus your negativity on a parent that DESERVES it like Casey Anthony.

God Bless the Travolta family. May they find comfort in the treasured memories of the time they had with their beloved son Jett. And, may Jett rest in peace.

Leno sucks, Conan rocks

I heard Travolta kept Jett locked up like "the gimp" in Pulp Fiction. Same leather outfit too.

How can you tell that someone had a seizure? Could he not have just fallen?
I would venture to guess there is a lot more to this story. This child exhibits typical symptoms and characteristics of Autism Spectrum Disorder. I think it is shameful that his parents denied him this diagnosis, and put shame to that diagnosis. I am curious to hear what Jenny Mcarthy and other high profiles celebs involved with autism will have to say.
Obviously Jett suffered from a developmental delay of some sorts, autism or not. I would think he would be better supervised, especially if he has a seizure disorder.
However, I am still curious on how they know he had a seizure, be it before or after the fall?
I think the tragedy is this child was never given the benefit of relevant therapies, and that his parents chose to hide him, rather than step up and use their celebrity to support PDD and ASD.

TMZ: The boy's name is Jett and not JEFF, your writer decided mid story to start calling him Jeff, you should admonish whoever wrote the article if he or she isn't anymore with it than that! A truly terrible loss for their family and hopefully the autopsy will shed more light on really what happened??

I have had such respect for both Kelly Preston and John Travolta over the years. I have also admired their marriage in the world of marrigages that never work. They have always maintained to keep things private to include their kids. His lawyer and close friend said it best: The pain is "unimaginable and unquantifiable."

I am so deeply sorry for this tragedy. My thoughts and prayers are with anyone that touched Jett's life.

Way to go TMZ, totally objective reporting. Why not just ask every PR/lawyer/mouthpiece for an account of what really happens behind closed doors of actors/celebrities? Im sure you'll always get the truth. lol

Seriously, do you think the Travolta family wants to admit no one saw Jett for hours upon hours (neglect) or that he had serious problems they did not address (autism)?

When are you going to report based facts and stop being used as a channel for pushing PR propoganda? OR are you on the Scientology payroll?

Boy Travolta and Cruise really have put a damper on all things Scientology. Is it any wonder their Sanctuary or Compound or Rectory or is it actually a Fortress has armed guards in and around it? What a wicked and evil place it must be.

If that child was not getting all the latest in what medications can do, than Cruise and Travolta better pray or whatever believers of a mad man L Ron Hubbard do, real hard.

Ask me, they both should get an Exorcism and get back to a real religion.

I'm sorry for the tragedy, I just hope it wasnt something preventable--- like when Cruise berated that actress for on Matt Laurer show for taking anti depressants after giving birth. If it was preventable through modern medicine and it wasnt followed because of L Ron Cruise, then may there be mercy shown on all their souls.

the autopsy will give an approximate time of death-will not be totally accurate but it will show if there was 12-16 hours before the ambulance was called or an hour or less
it's definitely close enough to try to figure out what really happened

so we'll have to reserve judgment on what we think happened until the scientific facts tell us what really happened

disappointed (not shocked) to hear that the kids are mostly raised by nannies-anyone with children who goes to bed at 5 a.m. by choice isn't up by 7 to see the child up and off to school

I was a terrible night owl and couldn't sleep well but after having a child I finally was able to work at it to change my body clock to a more acceptable rhythm to be able to function every waking minute that my child had

it was all in making it my biggest priority
had I have been able to afford nannies I don't think that I would have handled things any differently

wonder if this poor child was ever seen by any medical experts or
specialists who were not on a list of Scientology approved doctors

we'll never know since medical records are confidential
only the family's word that he had Kawasaki's or anything else
and we all know how families can lie and circle the wagons if they
feel the need to protect themselves
or be secretive

and if a doctor speaks about this to the news media-if he's
affiliated with Scientology-would we believe anything he said anyways
not sure I would

I'm sure the authorities in the Bahamas will manage to sweep this under the carpet, as they did with the death of Anna Nicole Smith's son.

There was something seriously wrong with that poor kid if he required so much monitoring. I think it was mostly to keep him under control so as not to embarass the Scientologists. Since Scientologists are all medically and mentally perfect. Disgusting.

Look at the video footage of Jett in Paris - the way he was lead to the van, as if he was a wayward 2 year old. The "caretaker" (the same one that Daddy John likes to kiss) pushing him along. Bizarre.

Disgusting, too, if they did, indeed, deny him the medical treatment that he desperately needed.

I don't buy the Travolta's story that the injury and death happened within minutes -- esp. if the kid had such constant supervision. It doesn't make sense. They are lying about something.

For the parents of special needs kids, this case is hardly unusual. The boy obviously was autistic. One can tell from the videos. And many people with autism also have epilepsy. Even if epilepsy is treated, there is a heightened risk of dying from a seizure if the person has a developmental disability, and is a young male. Those are simply risk categories. I doubt he died from a bump to the head. Recent studies show that during a seizure, the brain rarely - but often enough - doesn't tell the lungs to breath. The result is death. The vast majority of times, the person is found in bed or in the bathroom - the two places they are most likely alone. I know this because our son died this way. My heart goes out to the parents. I can only hope that despite their Scientology beliefs, they treated both Jett's autism and epilepsy adequately. If not, their grief, which has to bes immense, will be compounded by guilt.
