Travolta's Son -- Fatal Blow to Head

1/3/2009 2:36 PM PST BY TMZ STAFF

TMZ has learned what may have killed Jett Travolta, and it's not what police have suggested.

We've spoken with John Travolta's lawyer and close friend, Michael McDermott, and family attorney Michael Ossi, both of whom are with John in the Bahamas. They tell TMZ it appears Jett's fatal injury was the result of hitting his head on the bathtub, toilet seat, or both. And they say the intimation that Jett went undiscovered for hours is absolutely false.

Police have said the last time anyone saw Jett was when he went to the bathroom on January 1. His body was discovered by nanny Jeff Kathrein the next day at 10 AM. In fact, McDermott and Ossi say it appears Jett went back and forth to his room and the fatal injury occurred "very shortly" before Jett was found on the bathroom floor -- McDermott called it a "small window of time."

McDermott and Ossi tell us two nannies were present on the trip and Jeff was by his side 24/7. There was a baby monitor device by Jett's side and there was also a chimer in the bathroom when the door opened.

McDermott and Ossi say it is still unclear if Jett fell to the floor as a result of a seizure or if he had a seizure after falling or slipping. There was blood on the floor of the bathroom, but "not a tremendous amount." It appears the striking of Jett's head was the cause of death, though it won't be clear until the autopsy is performed Monday morning.

Jett's body will be embalmed Monday afternoon. There will be a local showing on Tuesday and later that day the body will be flown to Ocala, Fla. for burial.

McDermott says both John and Kelly are night owls. John often goes to sleep at around 5 AM. But McDermott says both nannies were at the hotel and Jeff always present.

McDermott tells us a hotel manager was first on scene with Jeff and the two of them administered CPR. John came in shortly thereafter and John took over for a "substantial period of time [and] was performing CPR and continued that until EMT came and took over."

McDermott says as for Travolta and Preston, the pain is "unimaginable and unquantifiable."

UPDATE: The Grand Bahamas health minister confirms that the autopsy will be conducted by two pathologists to ensure a proper evaluation has been made. A clinical and forensic pathologist from Nassau, that is U.S. certified, will fly into Grand Bahama on Monday to help perform the autopsy.

keep in mind folks that the nannies and all others who work for this family have signed confidentiality agreements so do not expet them to speak out about anything or they could be sued for the millions that they don't have

and working for the family they probably all love and want to protect Jett - even in death

I feel bad for this young man's demise. However, there are a lot of holes in the story that I do not follow. The post above reads that he kept going back and forth to his room. Why? This did not ring bells that something could possibly be wrong with him? Nobody thought to check on him after he went into the bathroom for the last time and did not come out? Where was his caregiver? Where was his parents? What "small window of time" are his lawyers talking about when they cannot even provide a time for when the child was last seen? Must be nice to be able to be "night owls" and not have to bother yourself with getting up in the morning when you have a special needs 16 year old who requires two "nannies". I have to wonder where they found these "nannies"? Oh well, does not really matter if these were the top two "nannies" in the world....it still does not take their responsibilities as parents away. A lot of old timers on here are defending this family to the death. I guess I simply do not share the same connection to John as those on here who boast about how they used to watch "welcome back kotter". smfh

If the Doctors could not complete or finalize Daniel's autopsy this one will never be concluded either, waste of everyone's time and useless.

Well I'm glad to see that TMZ is not like the NY POST and slamming the family without knowing all the facts. I knew there was no way this child was not checked on for 10 hours or more. This seems like a tragic accident. Regardless, this is a time for us to support the Travolta/Preston families in their time of need. The lose of a child has to be the most devastating time in a person's life. My condolences to the family. May Jett rest in peace!

Isn't it surprising that TommyBoy hasn't been heard from? That boy goes to a camera light like a moth to a flame.

The COS is working double-time to spin this.

#453 Candice,
How and when did John Travolta profit from pictures of his children? I had no idea what Jett looked like until now and images of him only came from the paparazzi invading his privacy and following him around.
How and when did John Travolta write his little autobiography (for a profit, of course)? If there are books about him, they are unauthorized autobiographies in which the hack author makes a profit off the celeb he's writing about.
John Travolta has never "whored" himself out, as you put it. He has never shared the personal details of his life with the public., except that he likes to fly planes. He has tried to keep his personal life as private as he could.
Why is it so important for bitter, angry, jealous biddies like you, Candice, to know the intimate details of his life as if he was your friend? Why does he owe you anything? He makes movies. All he owes the public is a good , entertaining performance. He doesn't even force anyone to go see his movies, either. You have free will to pay for his form of entertainment or not. That's it.
Some of the speculation that I've read on here is not "natural". It's hateful and slanderous. What should be "natural" is an outpouring of empathy towards this man and an expression of sympathy and condolences instead of the vile, ugly comments people are making as if they have first hand knowledge. That's so unfortunate and disappointing.

Michele, #459, correction...he's an actor. Actors whore themselves out for attention, fame and money. It comes with the territory. And not one of them are exmpt. They spend their entire lives trying to be famous and then when they are famous they say...oh leave me alone, I want my privacy.

JT has blathered on and on about his five air planes yet preaching about global warming. Hypocrite.

sad and unusual that the hotel manager was there before the parents were!!??!!
and now according to the US website the family lawyer is floating a balloon that the boy might have died in his father's arms

after reading info here on other sites it appears to me that the lawyers statement that the boy "might have died" in his dad's arms is a bit far fetched.

Of course he was not pronounced dead until the hospital-even if he had died 12 hours earlier as some suspect-the paramedics, once they arrived, can not legally pronounce someone dead-even if it is obvious-they must try to perform life saving up and until the person is pronounced dead by a physician

and the doctor was of course at the hospital where he was taken by ambulance

therefor he was pronounced dead at the hospital-even though the time of death won't be known until the autopsy results are available

chances are the paramedics efforts were in vain as it appears from everything I read that the child was last seen in the early evening and found dead in the mid morning

hard not to conjecture scenarios of what happened -or how Scientology affected their choice of treatment or lack of treatment for the boy's condition-which mainly appears to be autism or some form of mild retardation accompanied by seizures

the Travoltas were protecting their family-or image or choice of religion for all these years by keeping info about their son private-which they had every right to do-and they have kept the blame publicly on a syndrome he had only as a small child

can not blame them for their choices-it's a free country
but
it leads to a lot of questions and conjecturing now that the son has died.

regardless
a parents pain in burying a child is the worst thing that can possible happen to anyone and I'm sure that everyone feels sympathy in their hearts for this family and the young daughter who will miss her brother tremendouslyafter reading info on other sites it appears to me that the lawyers statement that the boy "might have died" in his dad's arms is a bit far fetched.

Bless them during this difficult passage. May they find comfort and strength in each other and the fond memories of their beloved son. With time they will heal, but, may they never forget the love they felt for their child.

Peace be with them.

Yes, it is odd that the hotel manager arrived before his parents when it was reported on People that John was in an upstairs bedroom. Where was that upstairs bedroom???

I think Dr. H stands for Dr. House? LOL Personally I like that show :)

Any physician will tell you head injury is high on the injury list, along with bitting your tongue....the list goes on. I work at a High School and let me tell you first hand I have seen Grand mal seizures to smaller ones. We currently have a student who had brain surgery last summer to reduce her seizures....she's still constantly down in our office not feeling well, or having seizures. When this child has one she closes her eyes and doesn't respond, she doesn't shake and flip around. However, we never leave her unattended, just in case.
