John Travolta's Son: Meds Ultimately Didn't Work

1/5/2009 5:00 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF

TMZ has learned more about the medical condition of John Travolta's son, Jett, and the medication that ultimately didn't work.

We're now told the grand mal seizures Jett suffered were "frequent and extremely serious." Travolta's lawyers, Michael Ossi and Michael McDermott, tell us "each seizure was like a death," with Jett losing consciousness and convulsing.

We now know Jett was taking a drug called Depakote, a strong anti-seizure medication. There have been reports Travolta refused to give his son anti-seizure meds because of Scientology but those stories are not true.

Jett had been having seizures on an average of every four days, until he started taking Depakote. Ossi and McDermott say the drug initially worked, reducing the frequency to approximately once every three weeks.

Jett took Depakote for "several years," but it eventually lost its effectiveness, according to Ossi and McDermott. They say the Travoltas were concerned about possible physical damage. And, Jett went back to having around one seizure a week. So Travolta and Preston, after consulting neurosurgeons, stopped administering the drug. No one is suggesting withdrawal of the medicine in any way caused the fatal episode.

So Jett was having gran mal seizures every four days but the mannies didn't check on him for more than ten hours?
The Depacote lost effectiveness so they stopped all medications rather than try any of the hundreds of other effective medications for the treatment of seizures?
Are they sure it was the depakote that damaged his liver? Overdosing on niacin damages the liver and that is a major component of the purification rundown scientology prescribes for people like Jett. Kelly Preston admitted to using it on Jett.

This young man is free now - healthy and strong.. It's his parents and sister we have to keep in our prayers. So sorry for your loss, truly sorry. No parent should have to bury their child.

DEPAKOTE. D-E-P-A-K-O-T-E. for real, i bet nina wrote this after dying her hair with the loreal box with beyonce on the front.

anyway, i just ended my job last year as a behavioral health professional. i worked for almost 3 years with teenagers in a residential setting with seizure disorders, autism, and a whole list of other mental retardations and behavioral disorders. i lived through chimes on doors and windows, hourly checks, watching children have seizures both grand mal, and the ones where they, if not within arms length could walk into traffic or fall down stairs because unless you can eye it, you would never know they were seizing. my heart goes out to the travoltas. until you have experienced what it is like to live with this, you will NEVER understand, never relate, never get it.

as far as medication goes... i am a supporter of medication. but its a lot more complicated than just giving someone something. first of all, GET OFF WEB MD AND GOOGLE... all these drugs are dangerous and not recommended for children. a child i worked with DIED at 15 years old from a seizure disorder, and he was or had been on every pill ever made. he died. in his bed. these drugs take 6 weeks to show consistent signs of treatment. they all cause weight gain, mood instabilty, sleepiness, sleeplessness, and a lot of times the children on it aren't able to communicate well enough to ever know if its working or how it makes them feel.

i've administered depakote to a kid who took 1000mg of this a day as well as 500 to 1000mg a day of keppra. he still had seizures. along with everything else he took. he was severely over weight. and if he missed one dose he could have a week full of 2-15 minute seizures all that were adding to the "if he keeps having seizures he'll be a vegetable by the time hes 21 yrs old." he had a vagus nerve stimulator. and that didnt help either. SOMETIMES IT JUST CANT BE STOPPED.

i'm sensitive, at times. mostly when surrounding the issue of mental retardation, small children, cats, etc. i hate people who drive drunk and start racial wars. but, honestly... i believe there was nothing that could have been done to prevent this. no need to blame or point fingers. it is what it is. and i strongly believe if he had not died, he would have died eventually, brain wise, from these seizures. so, may god take him to a better place.

If you don't feed your child and it dies from starvation you go to jail for killing that child. Likewise, if you have a sick child and deny them the care they need and they die as a result of that or NEGLECT, you will go to jail. The Scientologist are working full time to spin this, another MURDER at their ignorant expense.

The bloggers on here who have autistic children should know that every autistic child is different. I work with autistic children and the level of behaviour is mild to extremely severe. Unless one spent time with Jett, they can't compare him to another autistic child. Also, no medication is going to be a miracle worker. If the side effects pose a serious threat it's up to the individual or guardian to stop taking it. Personally, I've done that myself. Obviously, the Travolta's were advised by medical professionals. Leave them alone and let them grieve.

Wow, LOOK at all the RACISTS...

Okie, you came across intelligently, but seemed to straddle the fence (of ignorance) and I didn't want you to do that. A lot of negative posters NEED Jesus Himself to speak to them.

Have a good day.

What a riot!

LEAVE THEM ALONE, imo, you need a stiff drink, anger management classes, a nap...whatever it takes to calm you down.

You wishing bad for another person is just as bad as what you're raving about it.

Lord Almighty

I will reiterate what I said in another thread...

Do you think all Scientologists think and act exactly alike?? I'm a Christian and I'm horrified by some of the comments left here by "good Christian people," so I can certainly say that there are differences between people in my own religion. To lump all Scientologists together as a bunch of weirdo zealots is just ignorant and intolerant. Sure, you can have your opinion that they're all crazy, but it's not FACT. Travolta has been a Scientologist since the late '70s or early '80s, way before it became the "cool" Hollywood thing to do, and I never heard any reports of his family being frightened that he was in a "cult" or anything of the sort. Those who want to call it a cult - would you consider Hasidic Jews part of a cult? Or what about the Amish? They have some strange and very strict rules, and if a family member leaves the faith, they are cut off! No? Still not a cult? I guess since those religions are based on belief in a God, they're okay. I guess since L. Ron Hubbard didn't write the Bible or the Torah or the Koran, that means they're all legit. I guess all those guys who wrote the Bible and claimed to be prophets can be totally trusted.

See how easy it is to attack other religions? I don't know where some of you people are commenting from, but if you're Americans, you may have forgotten one of the basic rights of this country. Freedom of religion. You can bitch that Scientology isn't a religion all you want, but its followers feel otherwise. So do Satanists. And while I don't agree with them, they're free to believe in whatever they want. Of course, if they start killing people in the name of Satan, that's against the law. It's not against the law for Scientologists to refuse or discontinue medication if they don't feel that it works. Plenty of NON-Scientologists refuse medication for a variety of reasons. I myself have refused antibiotics after contracting MRSA and realizing that doctors often prescribe it when they shouldn't. As for anti-seizure meds, if they are the answer, then why do people still have seizures? Maybe some drugs can help "control" them, but obviously they can't be completely cured. You people have an Internet connection, and suddenly that makes you an M.D.! You sound just as ridiculous and self-important as Tom Cruise did when he went on his Today Show rant on psychotropic drugs, as if he knew more than the entire medical community.

As for the woman who said that anyone coming here to defend Travolta (or, more to the point, to NOT jump on the "Scientology kills" bandwagon) is a Scientologist...well, you're just another uninformed know-it-all who thinks that calling other people Scientologists will scare them from stating their opinions. I'm not a Scientologist, but if you want to think that I am, go right ahead. Label me whatever you want, it's what you're good at.

PJ. Scientology is not a religion. It is an organization started by a science fiction writer and megalomaniac who believed in aliens, not any God or gods. However, it hides behind the title Church because that guarantees tax benefits.

to okie doke
you really don't know anything about seizure medicine do you.... first of all it depends on the area of where the seizures come from.different types of seizure medicine helps different areas of the brain, I have a daughter who have temporal lobe seizers shes had them since she was 9 months old..shes now 15 years old. So quite down grading a parent for there choices that they make until u walk in there shoes. My prayers and thought with them

It doesn't matter how he died. His parents have lost a child and for that I extend deepest sympathy. Mr Travolta and his family will somehow work through all of this.

That boy is now a corpse in a box, nothing more. Believe in life, not death you moron.

First of all, spell the medication correctly. Second of all, the same attorneys gave a quote to US that said they weren't qualified to speak about the severity or frequency of Jett's seizures. They only know that he had them!

How terrible for the Travolta family. I wish them grace and comfort at this difficult time. Scientology, I believe, is a cult and an expensive one at that. L.Ron Hubburds book, DIANETICS, written in l950, is a wonderful self-help book. Read it and you will agree, it's a great guide for living. I separate Scientology from the teachings in the book.

There are several anti-seizure medications out there and I do question the Travolta's decision to not medicate their Son. But, you know, freedom of religion and all. God, when people "get Religion" why do they give up their common sense??

The $cientology spin doctors are in the house already! See posts #13 & #57 as evidence. $cientologists are everywhere...Fox news has two very public reporters and employees that are $cientologists. Also, don't be fooled by the "truths" these hack $cientologist lawyers and doctors are trying to spin you. They are professionals and will spin their BS on this to no end trying to smell like a rose. The dreams of L Ron Hubbard are about ready to come crashing down.
